Mm. The DM. I've been DM once, and that was pretty fun. But the worst feeling is when your DM has a specific storyline that they want *and force* you to follow. The way I did it, was I set up a goal that tied in with my players/characters wants. I had no FriCkIty fracking idea what I was doing, but that made it more fun as we went along :D Plus one of the campaigns I had the most fun in was thrown together on the spot, my DM was bulling the entire thing and it. Was. EPIC! I want to DM another campaign with my first group, but I'm still working on the worldbuilding and NPCs. So! My Advice for new DMs: 1) In The first session you have with your group, make your Characters together. And make sure that your group has filled out the personality stuff and check that they have a bacic backstory. 2) Maybe outline events that will be happening. Such as carnivals, festivals, wars, minor battles, conflicts, ect... 3) Don't be a limp noodle when it comes to corralling your players! They *will* be chaotic and ready to test your friendship. Set down ground rules. Ban social media and other distractions that are not related to the game. Trust me. 4) Give *in game* consequences for the killjoys. I've been a killjoy. Don't let us regin supreme. 5) DONT for the love of Pete, make a structured campaign unless your players are super obedient and take the most obvious route. It's a game about the players and the world. Not some story you want them to follow. Because it's not fun when the DM denies certain tasks that you want to do. And plus, the player always break the campaign.

Honestly I've thought about doing an "RPG campaign" with myself to write a story. When things don't go as planned is when it gets interesting. Say I want to have my hero leap across several tables escaping a hail of gunfire, only instead of just writing that, I roll for it, and he actually slips and goes flat on his face, then gets captured. Now I have to write him out of it.

@@thatboyUPS there is a huge spectrum of people that don't play dnd. Personally, I love the idea. I have all the books (in pdf, you'll soon understand why), i follow dnd YT channels, keep up with the news and so on. "Then why don't you play it, if you like it so much", you might be asking. Two reasons: first, I haven't got enough friends, second, thry don't like the idea nor now anything about dnd. So I never played it. Not even once. But I would like to A LOT. Also, in our country it's not that popular or known, so there aren't groups going around looking for an extra party member. On the other hand, don't you ever put me with the Fortnite fans. It is a game I looked at just once, only because my friends started playing. I just watched, never played. One time was enough to make me dislike the game, and tgis feeling grew stronger as time went by, hearing about its community. What I'm trying to say is that when talking about people there is no black or white situations. Just because I havr never tried something, you can't just assume what I like. That guy was expressing hiw he couldn't do something he would have liked to do, there's no reason to take it as a reason to pretend to know him...

Excellent explanation, thanks for this well made video. Sadly in my experience D&D is the most over-promised and under-delivered game I've ever attempted participating in. I don't have any friends who play so I've had to try finding a group at my local game shop. Tried for almost half a year in fact. If you plan on trying to play at a game shop, just prepare to deal with a lot of neckbeard, min-max, antagonistic trolls unless you're incredibly lucky or live in utopia. I've tried so many times and have had many toxic experiences. I couldn't even enjoy one shots because the insecure constantly-yelltalk-over-everyone dm killed me off as fast as he could because I dared to use my brain and try strategizing with my teammates. Constantly ended up feeling like I was a punching bag for someone to feel less pathetic about themselves by being a jerk to me when I just wanted to have fun and meet people and enjoy rp. Most of the players I was around were constantly distracted like on their phones, talking over each other, or being so loud you could never hear what anyone was actually saying. Lots of sexism, perverted kink talk, bullying and cursing. I can deal with mature content but it turns my stomach when adults do that in front of a bunch of kids at a game shop. It's supposed to be a family place, not a dive bar. The straw that broke the camel's back was seeing a table of 19-50 year olds bullying a 15 y/o kid who seemed to be on the autistic spectrum. I was the only one who was nice to him and tried to have our characters rp and do battle strategy together, he was a nice kid and didn't deserve that. He just had trouble focusing and who could blame him when it was a madhouse. Anyway... All of these factors actually made me quit D&D because it was so miserable and stressful. I've been a roleplayer and a gamer for over 23 years and this was definitely neither, just a disorganized obnoxious frat party with an identity crisis lol. I'm a grown ass adult, I expect my limited free time to be fun and a chance to destress, not to feel like a captive audience being held prisoner by an arrogant egotistical dictator. So I'm happy for everyone who has these magical experiences but I literally have never seen it happen in real life and I can't afford to waste anymore time chasing a unicorn that is this "fun and collaborative D&D game" that is fabled to exist.
@thematrixlunchhacker Жыл бұрын
Such a terrible experience, and yes, it very common (as in any game) to bump into toxic communities. But I mean, the good ones are not an utopia, just maybe harder to find

I'm sorry to hear of your bad experiences. I've been playing a long time and have been fortunate enough not to have that kind of experience. I hear about it happening, though. Their mom had bought them a starter set, so I offered to f un them through it, and they had a good time. I was glad I had a chance to make their first DnD experience positive.

This is probably the most confusing game out there, and as a new person who is interested, this video game me some great points to launch from for deeper research. My ultimate goal is to be a DM with my own created world and story, with hopefully a unique aspect of these; a gimmick I think it's called? I'm not sure yet but this helped a lot!

Go to your local game shop and ask about dnd night. Most shops host a night that people can come and play and even have a group for drop in players that are new to the game. My brother Matthew DMs for such a group here in Spokane.

This was fun in my college years when people sat around drinking and playing D&D. For us it was more about going through a story line and less about the technical aspect.

In the most simplistic and minimal of terms, D&D is what happens when a game of craps takes on the thematic story telling aspects of a game of Cowboys vs. Indians.

I've never played DND, but would this be allowed: a centaur who carries a pen and a sketchbook, and whatever she draws with the pen will become real, or if she's drawing something already real, like a specific person or weapon, and it's injured or broken, she can draw it without the detriments and the detriments will go away, or she can draw an enemy with detriments and the enemy will get those destriments. But the power only works when she adds her signature to the pic
@BlitzsieLDiscoLSnow5 жыл бұрын
Everything really depends on your GM and the world you play in. In the groups I play, this would never be allowed, or under very, very strict rules about the strength of the drawing. Because this sounds like godly powers that no mortal should ever be able to obtain, because it can break the world. It would be a fun idea to use it as an NPC that wants to do good but is unconsciously making the problems even worse, and gets in a position where the players either have to help the minotaur or kill it. Or do something else. Players will tend to find ways you've never thought about.
@fantasyshadows32075 жыл бұрын
Your character can always in the middle of drawing, lose their notebook getting ripped out of their hands at the last second leaving them vulnerable or maybe they aren’t really creative or their power comes with a dangerous side effect You choose
