In the campaign I'm in, one of our characters has already died twice, but due to the magic of plot convenience he is a part of the plane that we are on and just keeps reappearing somewhere else at a different point in time. Bear in mind, we've only had about 6 actual sessions. Also, he did lose his hand and his leg last time this happened...and was also impaled on a tree... UPDATE: He died again, and this time for real, as well as his whole plane...

I think most DMs spend most of their time trying to keep players alive. So you are leaving your party while they are buffing to charge across the open field 500 yards to single-handedly fight the 5 storm giants who have not noticed any of you? Yes it's in character... kudos...

As a DM, the reason why you want to keep pcs alive is because if they die you have to bring in a new character who has no background on the plot or story, which means all the investment into the previous character is lost. So short of also kicking the player from the game we now have a player with lots of meta knowledge, and a character that should theoretically be totally 1. Uninvested, and 2. Unknowledgable about the situation. When one of my players dies i try to give them a mini session to introduce this new character into the world, and gives the other pcs downtime to "catch-up" the new character. tl:dr killing characters makes things complicated

Neutral implies only one thing: that the character does not have a specific bent toward Lawful (believing in tradition, ritual, and the rule of law) or Chaotic (believing in personal freedom, flexibility, and judging on a case-by-case basis). Neutral is where your average person lies on the scale; in their day to day lives, your average person is not seriously considering whether a given action is balanced between Lawful and Chaotic enough. You're thinking of True Neutral, and *still* misrepresenting that. True Neutral is about balance, yes, but even then, a True Neutral person would *still try to resurrect a dead friend* because that's just something that happens in D&D games. Hoo boy, I could go on about the alignment system for aaaages. Pardon the rant, ladies and gentlefolk!

ATRDhosmhea That's the reason why I really dislike the alignment system. When not used correctly it forces people into specific behaviour, basically preventing individuality while creating cookie-cutter personalities (the stupid good pally, the "I don't have any opinions" true neutral, the "I beat everything I see to a pulp" chaotic evil and so on). It's often assumed you have to behave fitting for your alignment. But no, you play your character, not your alignment. You choose the alignment fitting for the characters personality and thoughts, not the other way around. Alignments are useful to describe the basic thinking of the char, but nothing more. You can't fit a personality into a 3x3 grid.

The core issue here is that there are different ways that people have fun in a dnd campaign. For you, me or Kyle's character, not only is the rez quest kinda terrible, but there is a core conflict between our style of fun and the fun that Ian's character or Rachel's character have. We would be happier with Rachel's character having consequences for trying to do something so horribly stupid. However, Rachel's character just wants to try silly things in a fantasy world. A low penalty for death is appropriate for her and allows her to quickly return to what she was doing. Ian's character, (unlike Ian), was a bit stupid and found the quest difficult and really cared about doing them. They were meaningful for his character which meant that they were a good fit for him. Allison's character was doing a good job of dming for everyone in the party except Kyle's character. Kyle's character only wanted to have his type of fun. Hence, when he starts spouting these "deep" and "profound" statements about dnd being about relationships, it was ironic as his character was blatantly ignoring it's real life relationships.

Great video as usual guys. I especially enjoyed the part where Rachel turned into a tree. The effect is well done and has this awkwardish look that makes the character not very believable, just like a D&D character created on the fly, so it is very well done. The effect where the face opens slightly when she possesses the tree is very cool and proves your attention to detail. We also have the unprepared/inexperience GM with Allison, which was neatly acted.

Not me I personally find playing diffren't characters fun, you get to try out different abilities roles and personalities without having to start another campaign. Heroic sacrifices and death scenes are also pretty cool (and totally undercut by a speedy resurrection). I like my characters but I'm not afraid to see them go.

Great sketch. There is often that one player who seems to have forgotten basic self preservation instincts. Played in a group once where one guy would always run forward, and immediately take an axe to the chest. Every time. And even once down, if someone healed him, he would stand back up. And evoke 3 attacks of opportunity. We weren’t surprised when he finally died, just unsure why it took so long.
