One time I spent a whole month working on a detailed map with rich lore and background. The first party I ran it with essentially hung out in the player's base and only ventured out to do required quests, not even bothering with adventure hooks. Sucks to be them; when I write campaigns side missions and events actually serve a purpose in the grand scheme of things instead of being a small distraction. So when they got to the final boss they were essentially charging in blind and half the party got wiped. About a year later I dusted off the same campaign and ran it for _another_ group, who took the time to explore the world. While they took like 5x as long to explore the map, they explored the shit out of it and walked into the final boss fight knowing who the boss was and with a plan to take him out. It goes to show that in a lot of campaigns, if you're careful and explore, you'll get tools or intel that helps later on.

The DM subtly hints that he THINKS this is a boring way to do the quest. If this was real, the DM might want to look for a group that fits his style of adventuring and the group should look for a more uh, townfolky(?) kinda gm. But that's just my opinion.

As a DM, I can assure you, the best moments I had were when the players didn't do what I had planned (we were all friends prior to that, it helped too). Sure, it's annoying to see all your planning fo to waste, or some NPC you liked being completely ignored or even murdered immediatly, but in the end, it gives you the best stories.

I was running a game once, and there was a barkeep who was an ex adventurer and there was bounties posted for some thieves that been causing trouble in town. The players found the thieves hideout but didn't want to fight them so they taunted the barkeep and he went down there and killed all the thieves and did the side quest for them hehe. I thought it was a boring way to do the quest, but it was funny in it's own way and people enjoyed it.

When we killed the local crime boss we just took over his tavern, then started a franchise in which the only adventures we would go on were to expand our business and reform drinking laws to be more lax. Any real missions that turned up we just stuck on the bounty board and took a commision fee. The GM just gave up and turned it into a real estate game

@PrimePal But you haven't answered my question. Everyone here is just talking about generic fantasy creatures and not saying what makes a dragon more generic than other the other generic fantasy creatures people are proposing as an alternative. Nor is anyone considering that the attempt to make something "less generic" might result in making something that the players don't connect or care about because it will be too bizarre or too at odds with the setting.

@@GeorgeMonet Think about, every big RPG or MMORPG game title have dragons in it. Most of the fantasy books have dragons in them. Even games and books that are not fantasy based have dragons in them. It is generic because different settings have own unique creatures and dragons are overused everywhere often divided into different variations like Forest Dragon, Ancient Dragon etc. Also it is the only creature that is known everywhere for having own treasure room and that is also why dragons are generic because all adventurers wanna lay their hands on all of that fancy magical items and gold.

This reminds me one epic quest in Shadowrun RPG (cyberpunk setting). Our group ocupied small ruined church and made it our local base of operations. Of course given location of that church and that is in Barrens (outskirts of city where all trash of city and worse live) inevitably we got rat problem in our house. As in devil rat problem. Turned out that month into living there we found out that deep under church (in remnants of sewerage) there is huge nest of giant mutated poisonous rats who started to move slowly upwards when they realized that we live there. We have no idea what kind of quest or solution our GM had in mind when he sprung this on us. Because out first reaction was "Fuck no, we are not going down there into those cramped tunnels to fight agains endless horde of giant rats". So we looked up some crazy doomsday cults around, picked best one for our purposes and send them falsified photo depicting Artifact related to their cult sitting right in middle of that rat nest along with some convincing mail. Well result were so amazing that in 45 minutes three schoolbuses (of course gangstered out) full with crazy cultist armed with everything fron knives and chains up to homemade flamethrower arrived to our church and without asking for permission rushed inside and through entrance in cellar went directly towards that rat nest. For next 6 hours we heard noises of combat from below before silence came. When we heroicly send scout to check it out (cheap expendable drone) all we found is that cultist died, most of rats died and those which survived no longer scurried arround since they had ton of food in their nest for the time being. Problem solved, quest completed :-D

Maybe you should try a more "Sandbox" kinda play style, where your heroes can roam free. I, as a player and a GM, don't really like those pre-written stories that heroes are forced to go through. I usually design a newspaper page and the group can decide on what to do. Then they have to travel there. Do the thing, but other quests they didn't tend to might escalate into bigger problems.

I see you have been afflicted by the curse of the murder hobos.
@Zappygunshot
@Zappygunshot 7 жыл бұрын
There's two ways to deal with murder hobos: you either give them free reign or you make them face consequences. The newspaper idea is a good example of the latter, but if they're really stubborn, don't be afraid to say "okay you just assaulted a guard in the middle of the biggest city for three hundred miles. You are now faced with him and his twenty colleagues that each have murder in their eyes, cop-killer." As DM, you don't have to always stick to all the encounter rules because it's 'fair,' sometimes a good story and fun experience is more important. Giving your players more freedom in how they want to deal with situations is certainly the more easy way, but personally I feel that the lack of a clear goal (other than "some men just want to see the world burn") can get old pretty fast. Finally, as an extension of the example given earlier, turn it into a bad guys campaign. 'Chaotic good' only goes so far to describe someone's murderous tendencies. Use your story to let your players know that if they go full evil, they should expect to have to deal with the good guys. Who knows, maybe they'll enjoy stickin' it to the man on a more official level ;)

One campaign I played had us start out as the level nothing npc's in a nowhere important town. Then the adventurers died in some haunted forest. There seemed to be a zombie apocalypse, so we had to go back in time long before we were even born. At some point two of our group disenchanted a pact stone that was keeping an evil Fey lord at bay. After making several new pact items to fix the Fey problem, we broke into a prison for psions. Then we headed to the mountains where we figured we might have to steal from a particularly powerful king. All the while we were searching for the blade of a very talkative holy sword... I love D&D.

My favorite d&d story I have ever experienced is: So me and my brother are starting a new game and my brother and I were fairly new to D&D so I was an elf with high dexterity and he was a dwarf with high strength so in the middle of a battle he thinks it's a good idea to try to do *A FREAKING BACKFLIP* to try and hit one the enemies so he rolls a d20 and gets a 2 he breaks his leg and he can do nothing the rest of the battle and when we were walking around, but then he thinks it's a good idea as soon as his leg heals and we're and another battle he'll do a backflip catch an arrow mid air and throw it back, the arrow would have missed him if he wouldn't have tried that and he sprained his ankle so I had to kill of the rest of the enemies

My favorite dnd story is me and party are playing with the deck of many things. To keep things short. One freind gets sent to the 5th level of hell. Another's soul is put into mind shielding ring and while there spawns an acolyte of death(looks like the grim reaper). This death wants to kill him of course but can't because he is in the ring. To which he then just kinda sitting around so than me with my insane persuasion because of the deck yet again decide to talk to the acolyte and ask if he would join and help us. To which I do marvelously on my persuasion check and succeed. So we have a guy in a ring, another in hell (unconscious and safe however), and then a grim reaper following us awaiting us to fill our end of the bargain of bringing the guys soul back to the ring so he can do battle with him and (hopefully defeat him). To which whenever the reaper got attacked he spawned a new acolyte that wanted to kill the thing that attacked him.

We got lucky the demon wasted the first round trying to charm my character, i resisted it, then on the second round our druids wolf companion tripped and grappled it so it had to break grapple before it could do anything. So we got two rounds to wail on it before it got a chance to attack and we both crit on the first attack did almost 30 damage and then i crit again on the next round as well. Then when it gets up it hits and ko's the wolf so it wouldn't trip him again but then we took him out next round. Found out after the game that he had a demonic great sword that did 2 d10+1 and then his strength mod of like +7 on a hit which would have one shot any character on a hit with min damage
