Bigby Presents: Glory of the Giants is a skinny bestiary that contains humongous creatures, namely giants, giants-turned-into-other-things, creatures that are almost giants, and creatures that are just big.
This book contains some new design approaches for 5e Dungeons & Dragons, but are they for the better? In this ranking I scrutinize the various monster entries and rate them accordingly. D&D is approaching its 50th anniversary, and are books like this one carrying it to its more glorious state yet, or dragging it down into the mire of over-commercialized pop sludge?

So a small note, while doing research for the book bigby was accidentally crushed and while there wasn’t a cleric with revivify around there was a Druid with reincarnation available that’s why he’s a gnome now. It’s not a retcon it’s a small advancement in a classic character’s story that makes some sense.

@@ismirdochegal4804 an example, monsters of the multiverse Minotaur vs Ravnica Minotaur race art. One is overly goofy and cartoonish. Like clarabelle from Disney playing as a swashbuckler. The other is fierce, intimidating and intense. A depiction of a true Minotaur in all its glory. It’s like comparing a Siberian wolf to a miniature husky wearing a sweater. Cocomelon fantasy is putting monocles on dragons and top hats on orcs and trying to take that seriously. Rock and roll fantasy or old school fantasy is really how DnD or fantasy was up until they started making these artistic decisions. Surely there’s better titles for these style clashes. But so far they work.

Funnily enough, I've started playing Pathfinder 1e, a game that affords a crazy amount of creative space to players and GMs alike, including rules on how to create your own races and monsters, while also giving a lot of rule support, advice, etc. heard PF2E has even more support for GMs.

The wording change comes from OneDnD, where everything is worded this way. "Gains X condition" instead of "target is X". I suppose GotG is a transition-phase book for them, so they already switched. I expect more of this new terminology in all future releases. Same for the new planescape book.

When you started the frostmourn segment, my initial thought was that it would be an undead frost giant who died from despair, suicide, or some similar tragedy. That gave me a really cool idea for a unique undead creature, more of an NPC than a monster. It would be some form of spirit similar to a ghost, formed from the tormented soul of an intelligent creature who committed suicide while there were still mortals who cared for them. Cursed for the pain and torment it brought to the people who loved it in life, the spirit must endure until there are none left alive who mourn its death, trying desperately to comfort or console them while being barred from allowing them to know the dead creature's spirit endures. The same curse would force the undead to suffer the pain of the living creatures it is spiritually bonded to. It seems like it would be a very compelling NPC that is rich with possible adventure hooks and plot lines, from why it chose death to how the party can ease the suffering of those who are unwittingly keeping it bound to its semblance of life.

I actually have a player that is planing on making a Firbolge Eldritch Knight for the next campign, and he wants to focus much more on the fact that his people are Giant Kin. So yeah, this video came on a good time, and while I sense that this book has it's flaws, I can't help but love some of it's ideas. I mean we haven't even gotten to the mutated troll and that thing had me do a double take; it was already badass enough that we had the Dire Troll!

@@CryptofSkulk Oh he knows about Rune Knights, he just chose to go with Eldritch Knight instead. He told me his character is blind, so in order to make up for it he is planing to use Find Familar inorder to see through it's eyes. I does get more compliacted then that seeing as I use a lot of house rules for my own version of the game, but yeah, his choice. Ain't knocking on the Rune Knights though, those are awesome!

It may feel strong at first, but monster stat blocks are not for the Player eyes, and fluff words lose appeal when franticly scanning through 2 to 5 different pages during encounters.

By minimizing the space generic and repetitive ability’s take up, you get way more writing space to write more lore and new abilities that are actually interesting. You complain about 4e statblock but it had the problem of thinking too inside the box and other clunky game design problems while basic 5e attacks take up 2 lines to write. Me stealing from pathfinder 2e design, cutting down my repetitive word count gave me space to write about the things that matters. Ever bemoan having to cut a monster’s abilities because it takes up a page and a half? And have that problem reapeatly? Key wording reacuring abilities are a life saver when dealing with the hike of paper prices even if part of a mega corp that refuse to give you proper funding.

For you entire rant about the Stone Giant of Evil Earth's Club around 9:30, I would like to present the wonderful little paragraph that is literally given at the start of the beastiary about this exact stuff: "Herein you’ll find weapons that deal unusual damage types and spellcasting that functions in atypical ways. Such an exception is a special feature of a monster and represents how it uses the weapon or casts its spells; the exception has no effect on how a weapon or a spell functions for others." So no; the characters cannot use this magical thundering effect. I also do not like how you pretend that monsters have never had attacks that dealt weird damage types before. As an example from the Monster Manual, just look at the Death Knight, who deals necrotic damage with its Longsword attack and does not have anything else given in its lore or statblock about its weapon being magical. It's just a trait of the creature, as is the thunder damage of the Club.

I can already imagine running an Evangelion-style campaign where it’s one gargantuan monstrosity after another, and the only way to slay them is to carefully outmaneuver their unique defenses. I do wish there would be some kinda rule that when a monster reaches such size that conventional attacks simply won’t work. You can’t just poke its foot until it dies; you need to attack a specific weak point or overcome a certain damage threshold.

on the undead hill giant, how about the name Hillghougheist I can imagine a hill giant saying that. Sending adventurers to take down a friend that was lost for a while but came back wrong. Unlikely i know for a hill giant to give a quest, but still, the prospect of a hill giant owning a favor to the party has its benefits, i imagine a hill giant in serious despair losing his friend and having he turned into that As far as i can remember hill giants don't have many friends, so i figure that would require an unorthodox aproach.

I mean lore is cool and such. But as an experianced Game Master, I don't neet so much of it. I want to have the monster ready to use for their mechanics, so that I do not have to come up with and tweak a monster. Lorewise a monster is whatever I say it is in my world. E.G.: In my Ravnic Campaign there are no Dwarfs, no Duergar und no Gnolls. I use these monsters anyway for their mechanics. The Duergar a Simic Hybrids that can use the enlarge spell stored upon them. The gnolls are minotaurs that gore and slam instead of bite and claw. Damage values and damage types stay the same. No work for me at all.

Maybe its me, but the inclusion of the Magical Weapon ability seemed utterly pointless. Only one feat i know off affects non-magical damage, Heavy Armor Master and its not even resistance, it reduces non-magical damage by 3. I know there are a few official magic items that give resistance or immunity to non-magical attacks but they are few and far between. Hell, barbarian rage, even totem warrior bear, is ALL damage of that type is resisted. You can have a hammer made by gods, and its still gonna do half damage to Grog over there when he's pissy. And dude, the constant 'mysterious blank damage' was a bit much. If a weapon deals damage BESIDES the base piercing, slashing or bludgeoning damage, its safe to assume that weapon is magical, either innately like a Flametongue, or because of who or what is holding it. But again, that's only really gonna come into play on the very rare occasion that a PC has some kind of resistance to non-magic damage. Or there's a monster fighting on the same side as the players.

The opening to every modern beastiary says the following paragraph (including Bigbies, as I just checked): "Herein you’ll find weapons that deal unusual damage types and spellcasting that functions in atypical ways. Such an exception is a special feature of a monster and represents how it uses the weapon or casts its spells; the exception has no effect on how a weapon or a spell functions for others." Unless the statblock says otherwise, it's a property of the creature not the weapon.

I think the non-magical damage on monsters weapons is for things like rage, so your players can still use their cool stuff on part of the damage

They could before. The main issue with the magic weapon trait is it rarely if ever came up, because the most common resistance to physical damage was barbarians- who have resistance to all bludgeing, piercing and slashing damage magical or not. This new design is much cleaner.

I'm going to take a different tack than a lot of the comments here. The new wording is clunky, but is clearly intended as a way to standardize mechanic language. That's good. 5e has had far too many cases of "natural language" getting in the way of rule clarity.

Read the lore. It's short. Won't take you more than 60 seconds. It's not like a giant went and "powered" up with elemental energy. It's more like he became a hermit for centuries, retreating from the normal life of a giant, until he became more an elemental than anything, losing much of himself along the way. The core elementals are all CR 5, mind you.

Urgh, I hate the videogame speak where everything that happens to a character is just a condition. Also, are they even trying with the lore? It's so easy to come up with better backgrounds for the monsters in there. Take the Barrowghast - maybe cannibalism is a taboo even amongst Hill Giants so when they catch a Hill Giant cannibal, they bury them alive to have them starve to death - the worst fate a Hill Giant can imagine. Sometimes, however, that is not the end of it...

A lot of these sound like weird nitpicks tbh. Like how long you spent on the wording getting changed... 😅 I'm with you on some of it, like the ghoul having no ghoul abilities and the wight having no wight abilities. But getting hung up on the Gigant when those have existed long before now, I've known about them since early yugioh for instance. Claiming your version is the one being copied is just... eh... cringe.

Esper keeps complaining about monsters doing various types of elemental damage, monsters don't have to follow same rules as player characters, and them doing different types of damage is the new way of doing things, as precursor to 'resistance to non-magical bludgeoning, piercing, and slashing damage' being removed in the upcoming core rulebooks completely, and magical damage just being replaced with damage of various types of elements, as you can see in the player character classes in the UA too all having replaced their 'attacks count as magical' abilities with 'can do x type damage instead of physical damage.'

Dude is gonna happen more frecuently that anti-white WotC is gonna take ideas of all of the creators that keep promoting and producing 3 party content for D&D...in my opinon dont mention D&D in your videos,dont put D&D in your tittles,promote your original stuff with out the"D&D"followers.Theres a lot of fans of TTRPG that would consume your original stuff with out"D&D"being the main driving force and you have great content on your channel,keep up the good work.

Idk why ppl need everything spelled out for them by the books. I find it hard to believe you guys would have a plan for why a creatures weapon does elemental damage if your players grab it. The frostmourn for instance does it rly gotta explain why an undead frost giants axe does cold dmg? Like c’mon

@@julius9943 I don't hate fey but look at them and tell me wizard of the coast isn't calling them fey, so that players can't wild shape into them! If they wanted more fey (which they should because the amount is laughable). They should give us some true fey and not this cate keeping
