For me, the best way to build a character with this race is to use the “Swashbuckler Rogue” subclass and pair that with the “Sailor” background.

It works man this with a best friend triton and a water genase crew!! I feel like you might have trouble getting away from the swashbuckler

I played a sea elf barbarian that paired the trident with the net to grapple and shank my enemies

The trident just makes sense. Also that was a sequence of weapons used in the arenas of rome

So, in my campaign worlds tridents get a non-magical +1 to damage with the piercing end, so those are slightly better than using a spear, but otherwise are a spear, which means I allow those to be used with the updated polearm master too.

I think that’s totally reasonable to add. Just conceptually I feel like the trident should be stronger as a martial weapon. I bump there damage due up cus I think it works. I am pretty sure if you average the damage between your plus 1 and the plus 8 the damage die becomes it balances out actually.

Ok i think I can work with this i have a little mermaid character concept based on Ariel this character's name is Ariana Seaheart a sea elf princess and a Fathomless warlock who made a deal with a sea Hag for magic to impress a human prince named Erit Goldberg hoping it will make him fell in love with her the sea Hag hated how pretty Ariana's voice was and had beef with Ariana's father so in exchange for the magic the sea Hag request 3 things 1 she must give up her voice for 3 years 2 she must earn this man's love in the form of true love's first kiss by the end of those 3 years and 3 if she fails to do so Ariana must be a servant for the Hag for as long as the Hag lives and permanently lose her voice but if she is successful she will keep her freedom and get her voice back and so obviously the Hag will try to make Ariana fail any way she can

That’s so on point. Like truly on point. Growing up my sister loved the little mermaid. So I am super familiar with it. You really put together a great version of her. I also love that the patron is actively trying to cause her to fail her deal. I also like that the deal isn’t just her soul.

I don’t what it is but I can’t stop playing elves. It could be from growing up loving Lord of the Rings. I’ve actually never played a sea elf. I’ve played high, wood, dark and even astral elf in Spelljammer. I might try it out someday with the circle of the sea druid if that gets out of unearthed arcana.

I really really like naga. Man we need more weird fish species up here. Locathan should drop that submerge mechanic.
