I remember being in the movie theater with my 17 year old son watching Saving Private Ryan . When it was over we were standing, waiting for the place to clear out when an old guy walked by us and I could see that he had been crying. I asked him if he was alright. He replied, "I was there, it was just like I was there again." I wish I had stayed a little longer and talked with him.

I have my grandfathers original m1 helmet from d-day, also his original m5 assault gas mask and bag. He Was A lieutenant, And was in the first wave of Normandy. Before his death in 2010, he told me that when he got on the water, he almost drowned because of his gear, and that he took everything off except his gas mask and bag, and used the bag as a flotation device until he got to the beaches, where he saw 2 of his best friends die right in front of him, and that, according to him is still fresh in his mind as if it happened a week ago. I’m a grown mfing man and I cry when I hear this man’s stories every time. Could never imagine the horror these boys went through even hearing these stories. 32 men off one small boat and 14-15 men lost immediately their lives as the ramp dropped. Most them lived their lives up until 18-mid20s. Still can’t imagine. I pray for those boys then and our boys and woman now. I know this a HUGE different scenario but wanted to buy each and every one of the girls and boys a round for at least helping protect my city of riots. Thank y’all for your service everyone.

I am the kid he hugs in the video. I am beyond honored to have met a hero like him. The first thing he asked me after my expression of gratitude was where I was from. When I said I'm from Denmark he told me he loves danish cheese. The group I was with couldn't help but laugh at the innocent comment after all those gruesome memories he shared. That moment will live with me forever, and I'll never forget him and the cause he fought for. Thank you Frank 🙏
