This upcoming classic isometric real time strategy game includes a retro design of its art and factions, and I just know you will love it at first sight just as much as I did. At launch D.O.R.F will feature elaborate and sprawling base building, with everything from resource refineries and factories to defensive structures including walls. The battles promise to be just as big with both powerful and unique units across three different factions with land, air and sea units. Some of the most iconic will no doubt be double zeppelin bombers, behemoth multi-turret tanks, tesla coil fighting vehicles, heavily armed and armored battleships, double hull flying bomber monstrosities, psychic warriors, giant crushing junk spheres of death, and clanky but ultra brutally powerful artillery mecha. I know I am laying it thick with the adjectives, I am just so into the ‘90 element right now, so bear with me on this.
Bonus feature is that structures can be rotated during base building, so there are 21th century elements in this retro game, and that is not the only one. Another is the ability of infantry units to go into civilian structures garrisoned by enemies and fight in close quarters with the occupants inside these makeshift bunkers, even kicking them out. This can also be done to enemy factories which will then give you access to your enemy’s tech and lets you use it against them. Some units can also be combined like troop carriers and mortars for example to give you an armored and mobile short range artillery unit.
This might be a twisted vision of the future, almost like Mad-Max on sci-fi steroids but economies still run on resources. So in D.O.R.F. you have several resources to mine and refine besides the eclectic power to keep everything running. Oil can be pumped out, ore can be mined and also scrap collected, meaning a three resource economy. There is the added step of refining, in specialized buildings, meaning efficient supply lines and logistics networks will be an important cog in your war industry and construction of more combat vehicles in this game. Basically resources must flow through conveyors or pipelines to be refined, and then to factories to be used, instead of just existing in a pool that's accessible instantly as most RTS games use. Some vehicles can do the resupplying of factories manually.
The setting of this game is on a very hostile version of our planet Earth which is full of abominations from genetic experiments, endless warfare and even some extraterrestrial anomalies. It is in this mess that you will be able to play a singleplayer campaign crafted for each of the three factions along with skirmish vs AI. Multiplayer is also planned with support of up to 8 players per match, meaning a maximum of 4vs4, but that is not the focus of this game. No info on a playable demo yet, so I will keep you updated.

This looks like a perfect mix of fun and nostalgia. It's very visually appealing in the same way that the original C&C was The units and buildings feel alive and for a lack of a better word... tactile. With all the gameplay elements and units that changed from C&C to Red Alert, it was the Harvester I missed the most. Having to dock, the canister was raised and you slowly watched your money increase as it was processed. The suspense of whether or not you would be able to afford even a single tank that turn added so much anticipation. When they were that important from the start, you looked after them rather than sending waves of troops.

Just FYI, calling it a collab isn't super accurate, more like they just shared some notes with us on how they managed to get a dynamic lighting/shadow-casting system in a fully 2D game, since we're aiming for the same kind of graphical upgrade that allows for things like vehicle headlights, searchlights, muzzle flashes casting light, etc. Although DORF's lighting/shadowing system will work a bit differently under the hood, since without getting too technical, the way Brigador does it doesn't work super well with airborne units.

My second favorite would be the mechanized one. @perafilozof C&C Red Alert when it first came out on PS1. I remember they day I bought it as a kid. I played it so much I can probably still do the cheat codes from muscle memory! Nuke, full map, money. I learnt how the AI in skirmish would only build air units if you did. It blew my mind and I fell in love with RTS games. Do you have a game where it all began for you?

As a matter of fact it does. I tried avoiding making comparisons in this video as not all gameplay is there yet and even the developers said they have yet to finish some parts of the game. @@perafilozof It's hard to decide. Tiberian Sun has the best writing and characters but could use a major rework. In terms of gameplay, I've had the most fun with C&C Generals and Red Alert 2 (with and without Yuri's Revenge). C&C 3 Tiberium Wars and C&C Generals have the best mods. Edit: I do miss Generals and RA2 a lot... my copy of "C&C The First Decade" stopped working when I had to forfeit Windows 7.

I would say the union of imperial states and the triple consortium. Don't like much the tribes, but there underground hidden defence turrets are cool. Reminds me of c&c red alert 2

Just my impressions on the factions; The Empire seems to be a sort of "Eurasian" power bloc, combining I guess European aristocracy and ancien regimes like the German Empire with diesel/steampunk and maybe some Soviet (or maybe or also Nazi?) elements like the brutalist architecture, I guess ‘brute force' things like big heavy tanks and cannons, the tesla tech (from RA2 Soviets) and the color red I am not sure if there is a Roman Empire thing as well especially with their logo. The vehicle aesthetics also remined me of Metal Slug as well. The Barbarians, don't think of them much, they seem be third-worldists (don't much about Mad Max) combined with some Orky stuff from Warhammer 40K with maybe Taliban futurism (idk much about Dune, maybe someone knows, I feel there maybe elements from there as well). The New World Order - they seem to be the Allies from RA2, idk if it's mainly based on the Asian allies like Japan judging from the description being from the "East" or America or a combination of both. The aesthetic seems to be a combo of a bit of Japanese mecha with walker mechs and the Empire from RA3 with more modern day and futuristic Americana especially air and naval elements, like as if someone took off the top of an American carrier or something and slapped it on a tank chassis. Idk, makes me think of the idea maybe from Dugin about this coming war of the world island, it’s Eurasia, the great land power, the world island which maybe DORF's “continent” with Russia and Old Europe combining as the Empire vs. the Atlanticists, the sea power, maybe in DORF, it is the Consortium (NWO) perhaps a sort of Anglo-Japanese/Asian Atlantic-Pacificists sea and air power. The Barbarians are a mix of the third-world, the Global South.

It needs to support 2k and 4k monitors needs higher resolutions, I get nostaiga but on bigger screens it will look completely bad, if resolution does not adjust. Big monitors like we all have now days were not around in that time period, so need to consider that.

@perafilozof I like them. Basic overview would be ; One will be slow but has armor/health, one will use massive cheap units to overwhelm and out flank, and the last will have expensive units that can hit hard. Letting a transport turning into a different unit like Red Alert 2 is could to see. Maybe let the Techno Barbarians have something like the Mirage Tank for RA 2 but instead of looking like a tree, it just looks like a neutral car or junk. Can't wait for a full list of units for each side so we can see how each faction is unique to the other. Good luck in balancing this! Looks like you have the Rule of Cool down just need to get it playing smooth.
