Thanks for the video Chris. Great info as always. I really enjoyed the slower pace of DaNang. Walking and crossing the streets, not as hectic or dangerous as HCMC. My number 1 pro is the lifestyle of DaNang. No need to rush. Take time to enjoy the smaller things in life!

Goodday Chris, This is the video I have been waiting for. The weather sounds like my home city Melbourne, 4 seasons in one day. More positives than negatives sounds like the place to be. I knew it was when I first visited in 2011 & I just love Da Nang. Highly recommend take the local bus at school pick up time to Ho an. Just do & you love it. Can't wait till I return back. Have to come & see my dentist in Da Nang soon also. Great video love love it. Cheers Your number 1 Fan from Melbourne, Australia. Louis Kats from Down Under. 👍 🙂 🇦🇺 🇨🇦

So I visited a family member that was living in Bao Loc and LOVED it. Cool climate, lakes and beautiful place to possibly bike. Not a huge expat destination though so you won’t see many foreigners or Viet tourists. I used to love Da Lat but it was sooo much busier with local VN tourists when I went last year.

Great video. I love Danang and will be back in September for about the 10th time since 2018. Funny thing is I always rent a motorbike and have never had a problem with bad drivers (I know this will generate howls of outrage from some - but people are different and I am just reporting my experience - I have NEVER had a problem and I have taken the Hoi Van pass from Danang all the way to Hue and back in a single day. I find it safer to drive a motorbike in Vietnam than in Canada. There is actually order in the chaos. Admittedly it is totally different than driving in North America but there is really only one rule - don't hit the person in front of you. You don't need mirrors - what is behind you is not your concern, it's theirs. If you can adjust to that - and I certainly did -then you will be fine. If you are nervous - then don't bother - take a Grab Taxi - they are as cheap as taking a city bus in a western country. I find the cars actually drive slowly in Danang and if you are an alert driver and know how to use roundabouts and yield properly, plus move with the traffic, you'll be just fine. Day or night this applies, along with liberal usage of your horn - it isn't rude - it's like in India (where I absolutely would NEVER drive, haha) where people honk to helpfully let you know where they are. When in Rome....Now, having said all that - I have seen people literally killed before my eyes in traffic accidents with trucks, sad but true - but luckily only a couple of times in 6 years. It comes from NOT PAYING ATTENTION. Not anticipating chaos. Expecting things to be like they are in your home country. Same old story. It's like when you go to Germany and drive on the autobahn. The left lane is for passing only. It's not like in North America where slow drivers hog both lanes - terrible. I loved driving in Germany because the drivers have great discipline and follow the rules - but that is totally different than Vietnam - so adapt or perish. They aren't changing for you so there is no point in complaining about it - embrace the change.

Thank you, I very much appreciate the honest insights. I spent a lot of time in S.E. Asia in the last century can no longer afford to, or look forward to living out my remaining years in what America offers and has become, and it's perspective such as this that I find most valuable, and what you relate brings me back to my recollections of S.E. lol true that Asians in general are loud...except for the Japanese who are the world's quietest and most polite people hands down. You can certainly minimize the noise level down a lot if you rent in a high rise condo, one that is at least at the 20 story higher and up so you won't hear the noise from the streets and all.

I've lived in Thailand for years and I am a cyclist here. I visited Vietnam (Hanoi and Saba) for 4 days last week and while the weather was amazing compared to Thailand (I live in Chiang Mai) the chaos and rude driving made me not want to come back again. Driving in Thailand is pretty bad but the people there literally honk at you and try to push you off the street or shove themselves into any gaps they can find. I can't imagine trying to ride my bike on any of those roads while constantly being cut off pushed around and honked at by these drivers. How do you deal with this? Maybe I need to try some other areas outside of cities and tourist traps like Sapa? Is all of Vietnam this bad with driving? Thanks.
@expatnam
@expatnam Жыл бұрын
Yep! it drives me crazy, it's particularly bad here in Da Nang where driver ed is non-existant. I usually listen to music at a low level whilst i ride to drown out the most aggressive 'honks' but being treated like you don't exist gets old fast. My pet hate is the aggressive overtake then pull back in right in front, and the car drivers who literally scrape past me all the time.
@HairyPixels
@HairyPixels Жыл бұрын
@@expatnam and I thought Thailand was bad. Pity because I was enjoying the cool weather in Hanoi. This time of year in Thailand the heat is intense, not to mention the smoke. Northern Vietnam would be a great escape considering how close it is (1.5 hour flight from Chiang Mai). Maybe another smaller town in the area would be better but I'm not keen on trying again to be honest.
@BrianBaileyedtech
@BrianBaileyedtech Жыл бұрын
I have also lived in Hanoi and HCMC. Danang is completely different. Much better driving wise because most of the roads are better and less crowded. Hanoi used to drive me crazy with all the bikes parked on the sidewalks so you couldn't walk - plus sometimes they would drive straight at you on the sidewalks. Danang is completely not like that. It is a tourism showcase and the government spends a lot more on proper infrastructure.

Hi there - very informative, thanks a lot. Visited Da Nang a couple of years ago and my wife and I discussed that it was a place we could retire. Do you know how it compares to Chiang Mai in Thailand in that respect? I was actually a bit surprised by the cost of renting apartments or villas in Da Nang.
@expatnam
@expatnam Жыл бұрын
A retirement or long term visa would be your biggest obstacle in VN although we will know imminently how that's going to change-i'll update here as soon as it does. Rent is definitely more in VN and quality lower. I have a friend who rents a place here and in CM and does a few months in each city-the CM place is half the cost but comparable quality.
@joannewhiteley6390

Been here 3 days, coming from Thailand my first impression is it seems to unfortunately have an 'Egypt' vibe. Nowhere near as friendly as Thailand, lots of hustlers eg: trying to charge tourists to use toilets. I'll give it a while longer as mentioned the traffic is beyond appalling, even the sidewalks aren't q safe, moving down to Hoi an, then HCMC so I'll see how I feel after the two weeks, but so far it's not somewhere I'd return to...also coffee, supposed to be renowned for great coffee, but you'll struggle to buy a jar? and in the cafes be sure to say no sugar or milk because they'll just throw it all in.
@expatnam
@expatnam Жыл бұрын
It's a slow burner kind of place in that it takes a while to find good restaurants, coffee shops etc etc. Vietnamese aren't the best at marketing i find so you have to do the leg work here a bit more. Thailand, especially Bangkok has come very far in recent years and the contrast with Vietnam is stark.
