This flight started VFR from Inverness (EGPE) so that we could fly low and slow along Loch Ness, Loch Lochy and Loch Linnhe all the way to Islay before we ascended to start our IFR routing to Biggin Hill. There was no ATC dialogue during the VFR part, so I just put in some music - I hope the purists don't object.
Music: Beoga; Live at 10
1) Soggy's (with Alan Doherty, Bríd Dunne & Clodagh Warnock)
2) Bellevue Waltz (with Alan Doherty, Bríd Dunne, Trevor Hutchinson, Martin O'Neill, Niall Vallely & Clodagh Warnock)
I highly recommend the album, available on iTunes or at:

This video has inspired me to take the plunge and finally learn to fly so I can fly around the highlands. I've watched this video about 10 times too :)

Love watching all your videos, and really enjoyed this one. And want to replicate your flight on my flight simulator so the actual flight date and take off time would be great so i can get the same weather. Also if I could be cheeky and ask if you would add them to any future flights would be great. Again thanks for posting and sharing your aviation adventures!

Flying over those lochs looks far too much fun to be decent. My envy levels are rising. I'm from Wales (living in Manchester) and I'm wondering if VFR flying in that gnarly part of the UK would look just as amazing. You should pay a visit. Wales is, after all, where all the cool kids hang out in the UK :)

I suspect Wales may have many military zones though. As a school kid going on many trips to Wales I recall seeing lots of RAF Tornadoes practising their low-level trickery in the valleys.

Brian, this may well be my favourite of your videos! I would love to fly across Scotland and England at "see level" and the DA-42 seems to be just the plane for it. You haven't posted a new video in a some time. I trust all is well? Best Regards, Ibrahim.

Great, but funny clearance "ILS and maintain 4.000ft". The most controller would say cleared to the LOC. How can I established on a ILS and stay at an altitude? The IFR pickup is noting for GB. You decide to fly IFR or VFR, you only nead a clerance for CAS or deconfliction service.
@jaunty17
@jaunty17 9 жыл бұрын
CheshuntISF i know. What he meant was to follow the localizer, not the ILS. Then holding the altitude makes sense. In other areas, like arrivals to Vienna and Paris, they ask when you are established on the localizer, and then ask you to declare when you are fully established (on the GS, or ILS). On the way into Toussus Le Noble, they got me established in the localizer 20 miles out at FL70 and then managed my altitude in steps until about 4 miles from the threshold. That was interesting!

Neat videos as always. Quite enjoying it man. If you don't mind me asking, why exactly do you fly in European airspace as a full blown FAA guy? :)
@jaunty17

+jaunty17 How long did the flight from Inverness to Biggin Hill take in total?
@riperezar
@riperezar 9 жыл бұрын
Quick question about your IFR FP route. Don't you have any restrictions on the length of DCT segments?
@jaunty17
@jaunty17 9 жыл бұрын
Richard Perez Araujo No, I've never had a flight plan rejected by Eurocontrol because of the length of DCT segments, unless its in the context of arrival. But that's more a matter of finding the right entry waypoint for the STARs.
@riperezar
@riperezar 9 жыл бұрын
jaunty17 Well, lucky you :) or I must say lucky you fly in airspaces managed by people with some common sense. If you file a FP in Spain with DCT segments in it it will be automatically rejected by the IFPS (no matter how short the segment is). Not Eurocontrol's fault though, but the Spain FIR's managers who feed local restrictions into the IFPS. There is a good testing tool from Eurocontrol I usually use for IFR planning (www.public.nm.eurocontrol.int/PUBPORTAL/gateway/spec/index.html Go to Flight Planning -> Structured Editor) which runs your FP through the IFPS and tells you any problems you may have. BTW, thanks for your videos. Awesome content!

Richard Perez Araujo I share your experience on the continent. There it's airways all the way. It seems only in Scandinavia they allow DCTs. Very convenient!

ESSNaviation It depends on my desired rate of descent and airspeed. If I want to stay within Vno (max 151 kias) and descend at 900-1000 fpm, then I often have to pull back to 40% or less.
