It's so obvious, isn't it? Weeks 8-10 of '22 they switched the p[lays & fields led the Bears to being the #1 offense in the league. The pre-D.J. Moore Bears. Then they returned to the play -sets from before & what a coinkydink, the offense sucked again. Any Other QB this would have been proof that play-calling was at fault, even before they used those better plays again weeks 11 & 14-17 of '23. Well, no I tell a lie: _ALMOST_ any other QB. Yes, people have identified how Press Taylor, Matt Canada & Matt Patricia have sabotaged Trevor Lawrence, Kenny Pickett & Mac Jones. But when changes in plays & or play-callers *_proved_* that Fields & Lamar Jackson were only being held back by this, You The Fans actually invented lies to say otherwise. With Fields, right after (and before) he showed he can elevate one of the Worst Offensive Rosters y'all said the Bears "needed to call Bad Plays in order to simplify the offense for him because he Can't Read Defenses." Never mind that Brett Himself proved this kzbin.info/www/bejne/h6bLhpV_iNOlbtU was a myth. For Lamar y'all said "Greg Roman is helping him with His Issues." Remember when the |Ravens held that press conference telling us this? You know, they came out & said publicly that their QB Had Issues & that Roman was there to help him overcome them, telling All The Other NFL Teams to exploit their QB's weaknesses? Yeah, that never happened. So if no one on the Ravens ever said this, where did fans hear it? They made it up. So what _was_ the reason the reason for excusing the HC from turning Lamar from a 36 TD to only 6 INT MVP to 16 (less than half) to 13 (more than double) one? What do Lawrence, Pickett & Jones have that Fields & LJ8 don't when *both **_PROVED_* that play-calling was The Reason for their bad play? It's a mystery, eh?

@@ChewsCarefully Getsy was a problem. Fields was a bigger one. There is plenty of evidence that Fields held the team back more than the team held Fields back. Fields can't read an NFL defense and no amount of excuses is going to change that. A quarterbacks job is to throw the ball. Fields is absolutely awful at throwing the football. But the Fields cult can't accept that Fields had any part to do with his failure and it's frankly embarrassing at this point. If you think three weeks is proof of anything other than you don't understand sample sizes that's a you problem nobody else.

I’m with Brett. When poles made that trade for the no 1 pick with Carolina, he had an inkling that if jF1 wasn’t cuttin it he had two firsts in his pocket to trade up for a qb. He had his scouts at usc for 2 years scouting Caleb, getting to know everything about him already. There’s no way he wasn’t preparing for that. He wouldn’t be doin his job if he didn’t work those scenarios out with a “generational” prospect in this draft. But we all know who we have to thank. That Lovie smith who decided to go for it on 4th n 22 with the Texans in a meaningless game to help secure that no 1 pick. Lovie is a god in this city. But then poles executes the fleece of a century cuz carolina couldn’t wait a year and wanted that lil middle schooler for a qb. Gave us Caleb, dj, Tyrique, wright and a second next year. In poles we trust 🤷‍♂️

I dont think its fair to judge the finer details of a rebuild under hindsight because by nearly every metric the way the Bears handled the recent draft and trades, it's been very successful. The players producing on the field is a separate hurdle imo. But you can't make the moves they did along with the picks and say they didn't successfully put the team in the best possible position

One more thing about Jim McMahon he was content to let Walter and the defense be the focal points of the team. He simply, did what he had to do when he had to do it to get a win. A prime example of this is the Thursday night Viking game where he came into the middle of a game the Bears were losing and proceeded to throw 3 TD passes in 7 minutes then went back to sit on the bench and watch the game. The week before he lobbied hard to play in this game and during the game he was in Ditka's ear big time to let him play. Finally, Ditka relented and McMahon's Minnesota Miracle game was born.

Paid $24 million for Swift when could have had Montgomery for 18... Paid 15 million guaranteed to Swift while Monty was paid 9 million guaranteed. Both had 4.6 yards per carry behind the two of the best lines in the NFL last year. Monty had 13 TDs and Swift had 5. So... Poles decided to pay Swift - an often injured player and consequently often an unavailable player - a LOT more than he could have paid to have a Beast (Monty) who's usually available! And of course DMo was more productive than Swift last year "by Miles"... When it was 3rd down and 9 - the Lions would hand the ball to Dmo and he'd get ten yards on the ground. He can also block when someone blitzes. Swift - he can get into the way and try to block - but he will miss and get injured... The GM work is peculiar ...

Given that Waldron seems sincere about tailoring an offense around the talent given TO him I do not believe the Bears will have a pass, heavy, run light offense in the beginning of the 2024 season. However, as Caleb grows this could easily change. I also do not see Waldron running a run heavy, pass light offense in the beginning, as well. A 50/50 split or damn close to it seems the most logical assumption early in the season IMO.

The trenches still terrify me. Their O-Line is still struggling to stay healthy, even in training camp. They didn't improve at the OLine, and the interior of the line last year was straight up abysmal. The D-Line got better with Sweat, but he's really the only name you need to worry about. Teams with great Tackles or depth at the O-Line will be able to negate our pass rush unless some of the young players on the line improve significantly over last year. The fun positions to watch have all been improved, but I'm still not convinced this team is good enough with the big bois to be a legitimate contender. If the OLine is going to be as bad as I think it is, it could be a repeat of watching Justin Fields get destroyed against the Browns in his first start (got sacked 9 times, pretty sure Miles Garrett adopted Justin Fields after the game). I pray I'm wrong. Edit - I also think the addition of Sweat and Snow might be a bit overstated. The Bears were a de-facto bye-week for most teams as early as the middle of the year because their record, and because their play was so awful. Nobody brought their A game against the Bears after week 7. It is human nature to take a team as bad as the Bears were last year lightly, and that matters a lot more in a game where you have to be as physical as you need to be in football. This wouldn't be the first time Bears fans convinced themselves the Defense was improving after a terrible year and a "re-surge" at the end of the season. I do hope I'm wrong though

As much as we can design a more fair and equal hiring process, nepotism in any walk of life will naturally supersede this. I’m cautiously optimistic. It all comes down to the O-line and Gervon Dexter. If the O-line can’t be at least average then there is no hope for Williams to have a decent year. If Dexter can get consistent pressure on opposing QBs the defense will be fantastic. If not, Sweat will break down fighting through double team blocks and chips and no one else will be a threat. A team can have the greatest secondary in history and still lose because if given enough time a professional QB will pick any defense apart.

I liked Justin, rode with him as long as I could. But he had clear limitations that were exposed when it mattered most. Maybe he levels up in Pittsburgh, who knows. But Caleb is that dude. Now it's about the infrastructure and the game within the game. #BearTFDown2024

Bears win 6-8 games. Caleb shows he’s legit, Flus gets fired and Benny Boy Johnson comes to town

It would’ve been funny if you didn’t mention the bears at all this episode based off resisting to talk about them in other episodes. As a bears fan

I believe Bootleg is the only show that still talks about Phil Snow as if they were a real person. There is no Phil Snow.

I would put him up there with Sweetness. But he would have to win more than one SB to have MJ status. And probably more than 2. Lol

Bears running game took a hit in 2023 vs 2022, as Getsy shelved the 2022 running game, so disappointed they were only 9th. Not shocked about the passing or score ranking, as dunking on Fields became a meme that went beyond his actual performance. QBs that can run are also good in the redzone (so not shocked by their scoring ranking either). People forget how awful the defense was 2022 into the first half of 2024.

Bears fans are the perennial champs of gassing themselves up in the off-season. We'll see if this one has any staying power, but remember, bears fans thought fields might win the mvp this same time last year.

Are we assuming they will not be running? because I don't see them not utilizing the backs more than they did in Seattle.

EJ, love the JD t-shirt. Disagree with your Rome take. Rome is proving to be much more capable in training camp. Believe the hype!
