Now that I think about it, considering how much of a long shot it was, Nell must've been the CO in charge when they decided to re-make the games.

Man, that 5 BPM makes a difference in this cover. It's just a tiny, tiny amount slower than the original. The instrumentation is there, the good playing, and the creativity on the solo fills. But it lacks a bit of that energy that the original theme had. It feels like the edge is just a little blunted from the slight down-tempo, especially because of the way metal-style instrumentation changes the length of how long certain sounds will persist. This cover doesn't quite give me the same driving force and the forward motion that the original does. The notes hang on for just a *little* too long from the drums and bass up to the lead guitar. The fun rhythmic section from around 0:48 to the end of the "loop" really emphasizes the little bit of back-drag on the tempo. There's not a lot going on there in the original song if it's not to highlight the rhythmic energy created by the lead playing off the space between the drums and I think it's just a weakness of the stylistic direction of metal drums using the cymbals for their quarter-note-rides that makes this section a bit weaker in this cover. Even if the original's drums continue their usual loop here, I think this cover would've been much better served (and your playing for this section better served as well) if you'd taken the time to write a drum section that better keeps that same crisp rhythmic interplay while still surviving the style transition. The fact that the original didn't mark on a quarter-note beat and instead marked time with a constant eighth-note fill on a cymbal (or maybe a tambourine?) lends a lot of driving force. Metal-drums instead use a ride on the crash cymbals to keep time and those crashes just blanket everything in a single, long, sound that kind of crushes rhythmic force. Not only did our time-marking get cut in half from a eighth to a quarter in this cover, those quarters aren't very *clean* quarters. There's no space between them so it's just one singular sound with accented pulses and I think the rest of your music was hurt by it. The remainder of the song is strong work here; your own personal spins and the parts where you specifically tried to "reinvent" her theme with more interesting chords, rhythmic play, and changes in your supporting instruments were all very enjoyable. It's unfortunate that strong effort is specifically in the non-cover parts of the song. Anywhere you did your own thing was very strong in this performance, but everywhere you tried to stay true to the original felt very weak. Ironically, the sections of this song where you came up with original tweaks demonstrate the successful shift of bringing her theme into the metal style and keeping that level of intensity and energy, but instead of relying on the original's crisp syncopated beats, you infused it with the kind of energy unique to metal. It was when you tried to "only" cover the original theme that you managed to lose out on both the original energy *and* the intense energy that comes from metal. It was a good performance and had good ideas, but the actual cover-section of the cover wasn't great.

How did you make such a bouncy and lighthearted tune sound good on a metal guitar cover? Peak talent right here.
