This song is so touching because it invokes the quintessential combination of Slavic and Native American feelings of home through instruments of both cultures. It's in the blood and generational memory of much of its audience. Imagine sitting down and playing these instruments, different peoples, different languages except one: music. And it's beautiful

that is a beautiful way to reimagine this song. When I hear this song I imagine dwarven warriors coming home from a war they never wanted to fight, against enemies who didn't want to die, only to return broken and forgotten by the people who sent them to their deaths. The nobles laughing it up in the dining halls as poets sing of the glorified battles these warriors experience first hand. No wonder they'd spend their days mining, so they didn't have to here the taunting singing of their kin. No wonder did the warrior who breached the adamantine cluster, open the demons of hell with open arms when they poured through the vein. All that strife and for what? To have your trauma be glorified and for people to treat you like a stranger. Let the demons scorch this fortress, let them burn this land.

Bodies broken, dwarves lost, a battle was won but at what cost? After the long way back, as they trudged through savage wilds and familiar settlements, they see it just over the hill. A home, but not just any home, a mountainhome fit for the finest warriors of Swordcave. A place where fallen warriors can rest easy in the mountainhalls of their fallen ancestors, where they drink and forge all day and all night. Fikod smiles as a tear rolls down his one good eye as he closes it for one last time whilst laid down in a pool of his own blood .

It was a magical place, a mountain home of paradise. Upon arriving, they felt the Spirit of the Mountain all around them. They could not believe their luck, to stumble upon this ancient fortress. All year was spent, removing vegetation, restoring the walls of this immense and mysterious place. Exploring the beautiful and bountiful hill sides, they found native fruit trees rivers and fauna. Similar to what they had encountered before, yet somehow strangely different... The fortress had everything they expected and more, fallen to semi ruin over the ages. They could not help but wonder as to the fate of those who had been before, as they explored the depths and caverns that lay beneath. Then Winter Came. And with Winter, Came Darkness. It was more than hardship. It was as if a Curse had been laid upon them. As if everything built here where doomed to collapse, falling into the Earth. Food went sour, accidents crippled them. Children were mysteriously murdered. Wild animals attacked them. Equipment broke suddenly, hurling Dwarfs to their Death. Their bodies almost irrecoverable buried, submerged deep within the caverns. It took weeks to even find some of the bodies...Mangled beyond recognition..... ...........Eventually, even the Ale ran dry...... Many of the Dwarfs wandered, as though lost in a daze, stricken by grief from such loss of life...Even the most stalwart among them worked in almost silence...Hearing only the sad melody within their minds...Demons drove some Dwarfs to despair, and even Death. The Vile forces of Darkness seemed to emanate hatred from Deep within the Earth. The Elder Dwarfs, who had lived this tale before, resigned themselves to starvation. No Wagons could pass through the Winter Landscape.........Most thought they would never come. - Nafec Oakenhorn, the Hunter, sat upon a frozen turf in the Plains. There was no snow, but ice hung everywhere, even from the trees. He knew there was no Game out here, he knew not why. His clothes were in tatters. Only his old Goats Wool Tunic and stubbornness kept him from freezing. He sighed. Remembering the old friends he had lost not two weeks before, in the fateful Pit Shaft collapse. He pulled the last piece of Bread and Cheese from his pocket, wondering if it would give him the strength to make the long cold walk back. He did not care. The cheese was so old it looked like Craft Dwarf Putty. He smiled inwardly, at the thought of leaving it on Vakumi Emberbraid's Work Bench. The thought of his Old Tavern Friend Vakumi would often make him smile. He chomped down hard on the Crusty Cob, small chunks of hard bread flew from his mouth. He then realized these were in fact pieces of broken tooth. He continued to chew it more carefully with his rear teeth. Thankful his face was numb from the cold, and that he had the Putty-like cheese, which would hopefully temporarily fill the chipped teeth-as desert. His new scar itched. The Hammer Dwarf had Branded him for fighting, not two months past now. It was circular rings with cross-sectional lines, from a pattern on an Old Sledge Hammer. He liked it. It was very Old Dwarfen. He WAS an Old Dwarf. His chewing of the bread sounded like footsteps crushing ice. For a moment he imagined he smelt Yaks Balls...... ....He stopped chewing.. He knew straight away. Only an Elve could creep up on him like that. Just then, right in front of him on the yonder tree line, a shadow appeared. -Bits of Bread flew from his mouth, in a half choke, half laugh-half cry. He nearly choked and cried simultaneously!! An Elve!!! Out Here!!! With A Yak!!!!! A BLOOMIN CARAVAN!!! As he choked, and wiped the Bread from his beard, a single tear rolled from his left eye. THE DWARF CHILDREN WERE SAVED!!! He Broke into a broad grin, wiping the tear away with his sleeve.....He could not let the Elve see it, it would push the PRICE up!!! They had sooo many mechanisms to trade!! And anyway, Elves did not know that tears could come from a Dwarf. The Elve would think him Possessed. He could smell the Spices, as he rushed to his feet and ran to the Elve, waving frantically. Vakumi's Mechanisms could fetch HUNDREDS EACH...He smiled, greedily, beckoning to the Elve. In Winter! Such a strange Elve. I liked your story, hoped you might like one back. STRIKE THE EARTH BROTHER!!!!!!!!!!!!

I only just realized this, but is that clicking sound because you're using a hurdy-gurdy? Nice obscure instrument use! Really gives that "16th century Eastern European" vibe.

It is time. Out of the mountain we march... into the teeth of madness. Avenging our fallen, recovering sacred heirlooms and the hallowed bones of our brothers. Bring them home. God Damnit, Thikut, get out of that tree before you dehydrate.

I would much rather have the other OST resemble this one. It feels the most like "dwarf fortress". The other ones, although well composed and good to listen don't give that vibe at all. The constant guitar as the main instrument resembles Rimworld too much for me.

The presumably used a guitar often because the original fortress mode is just a guitar, idk, maybe i just dont have that problem because i havent played rimworld

@preka, you're right, but Rimworld ost is different. It's more like a western, as well as tribal music, so it's not Dwarf Fortress style at all. But the P-music mod for Rimworld is really similar to the Dabu work. I advise you to listen to this😉
