He had surgery about 10 yrs ago to repair a ruptured vocal cord. That surgery impacted his falsetto but he still sounds amazing imo

Yea, he can’t hit the notes exactly the same anymore. Also, I think he has retired singing “This Woman’s Work” b/c of the amount of falsetto he has to do in that song.

Glad to see you two enjoying Maxwell. Just to help with a few points: 1. Maxwell is in his 50's now 2. His falsetto was always his most noticable signature. Some years back, he had a vocal injury and had surgery to repair it. And yet he still navigates his singing so well. 3. Millennials are actually currently in their upper 30's - early 40's lol (80's babies)

When Maxwell first came out in the 90's, he was hot and his voice was really at its prime and so silky. A little over ten years ago, he had to undergo airway reconstruction surgery which affected his full singing ability, but he still sings beautifully. He gave a shoutout to Millennials for reviving his career with that song, "Pretty Wings" off of the album, blackSummersnight. Maxwell is one of my favorite R&B singers. You should definitely listen to the studio versions of the songs.

I kind of disagree about Tiny Desk being a good way to be introduced to artists. I think a couple of these songs you would've LOVED if you'd heard the studio version first, like "Bad Habit." Some of the best elements of the song weren't captured in this scaled down version, but those of us who already know it can get into it because we know the song and because of the nostalgia attached for us. But i would've loved for you to have heard the actual version first. I think Tiny Desks are best appreciated by people who already love the artist/music.

I agree. I've been introduced to some artists through Tiny Desk and enjoyed it, but their studio-recorded music doesn't sound the same. Typically for me it has been a bit disappointing hearing the studio versions after the Tiny Desk versions due to the sometimes overproduced nature of studio recordings.

@@jamedraa8472 Oh man 😆 Sometimes it's like they instinctively talk over the best/key parts of a song lol. I know that not everyone enjoys music in the same manner, but I personally feel that a piece of good music should be taken in as a complete work of art, at least the first time you hear it. Talking over it is like seeing a painting for the first time but with pieces of tape covering certain parts. I would love to see them, at least every now and then, listen to a whole song completely uninterrupted, then listen a second time, sharing their thoughts.
@you_can_call_me_T
@you_can_call_me_T 2 ай бұрын
@@ijustneedmyself I can definitely see that. I think another factor is that some of these Tiny Desk artists have decades in the industry and there are a few whose vocals just aren't the same anymore and they adjust their songs to fit their current abilities. Maxwell is a good example. If they heard him in his prime, they would've never compared him to Miguel lol

Listen to his audio recordings. 2) Maxwell had throat surgery years ago as a result of blood clots on his vocal cords. That's why his falsetto is not like it was in the earlier years. Listen the CDs. 3) The song Pretty Wings was Maxwell's first recording after a 7-8 year absence. Pretty Wings a song about a breakup, earned Maxwell Grammy Awards. Finally, Maxwell's interaction with his fans is like that all the time in his concerts. He's humbled and grateful to his fans and how we know ALl the words to the songs. Thanks for sharing, that makes me sad but grateful he’s still performing! I didn’t even notice the lack of falsetto when I listened to Maxwell’s Tiny Desk til I watched this one bc I was too busy singing and groovin’! Lol

Maxwell has been a favorite since the early-mid nineties for me. Owned every album on CD. So happy to see this and that you two are enjoying his music. He seems happy.

Dad said "missed the joke?" No joke. Just Maxwell's surprise and showing love to the crowd knowing all the words to the song. Something he always acknowledges in his concerts.🥰 PLEASE!!! Listen to his CDs especially his MTV Umplugged. You will hear his falsetto.

I saw Maxwell Tiny Desk concert and OMGoodness! It was the best one ever!! The Best Way to hear Maxwell is to be in NYC in the summer at night on a high floor building sitting on the balcony, lookin at the city-filled night lights with I-Pods on....or in the car in the summertime!

You gotta be kidding! ! Maxwell is known just by the intro to his songs and his vocals are amazing. Please just enjoy and don’t pick it apart…the man is epic! He’s in his early 50’s so he most definitely has paid his dues.

His falsetto was off here, and you could tell it was something overall going on with his voice by the rasp when he was speaking. Of course you would have to have heard him speak before to know that lol. This Woman's Work is one of his most popular songs and it's almost entirely him singing in falsetto. Between that and how emotional the subject matter of the song is, it's no wonder he didn't perform it here. I saw him live at the Kennedy Center in DC last October and his singing voice still sounded perfect. My girlfriend thought he was lip syncing until he started ad libbing. He literally missed one note the whole concert. You should definitely check out his MTV Unplugged performance as well as the studio recorded versions of his songs

@3COI I think Maxwell is one of those artists that instead of lipsyncing, would just rather not perform, if he felt he couldn't perform the songs live. He is very into musicianship and in love with the art of music, this definitely shows in his music, writing and live performances.

Maybe 15-18 years ago i was lucky enough to go Maxwells birthday party in the Hollywood Hills. I wasn’t invited but went with a friend. It wasn’t his house but a rented out mansion. I went out back to smoke a cigarette and there was no one really around. And then Maxwell emerged from the bushes and trees with a beautiful black woman that was a Dime on anybody’s list. He looked kinda embarrassed but had a big smile on his face and said what’s up and went back inside. Who knows what happened in those bushes but i have my ideas 😂

Maxwell records were meant to be played all the way through. In the late 90s , early 2000s his was an album that you put on when it was time to make love! It's not just one song at a time. Maxwell creates a VIBE. ( I would not listen to it with my parents, this was boyfriend jams)

May I suggest that you guys do a review the MTV unplugged he did in his prime . His falsetto was perfect when he did the song “ this woman’s work “. Prior to his surgery he was even better than he is today. His lower register is still there though and he sounds great.

Maxwell’s MTV unplugged is him in his prime, with the falsetto of his prime. He still sounds great now but he was absolutely amazing back then. The urban hang suite is a masterpiece in my opinion. Be blessed!

His falsetto is one of his staples. Of course, when you get older that can get trickier. But if y'all look at other performances of his, maybe 10 years ago and he will hit the falsetto.
