When Maxwell first came out in the 90's, he was hot and his voice was really at its prime and so silky. A little over ten years ago, he had to undergo airway reconstruction surgery which affected his full singing ability, but he still sings beautifully. He gave a shoutout to Millennials for reviving his career with that song, "Pretty Wings" off of the album, blackSummersnight. Maxwell is one of my favorite R&B singers. You should definitely listen to the studio versions of the songs.
@you_can_call_me_T2 ай бұрын
I kind of disagree about Tiny Desk being a good way to be introduced to artists. I think a couple of these songs you would've LOVED if you'd heard the studio version first, like "Bad Habit." Some of the best elements of the song weren't captured in this scaled down version, but those of us who already know it can get into it because we know the song and because of the nostalgia attached for us. But i would've loved for you to have heard the actual version first. I think Tiny Desks are best appreciated by people who already love the artist/music.

I agree. I've been introduced to some artists through Tiny Desk and enjoyed it, but their studio-recorded music doesn't sound the same. Typically for me it has been a bit disappointing hearing the studio versions after the Tiny Desk versions due to the sometimes overproduced nature of studio recordings.
@you_can_call_me_T2 ай бұрын
@@jamedraa8472 Oh man 😆 Sometimes it's like they instinctively talk over the best/key parts of a song lol. I know that not everyone enjoys music in the same manner, but I personally feel that a piece of good music should be taken in as a complete work of art, at least the first time you hear it. Talking over it is like seeing a painting for the first time but with pieces of tape covering certain parts. I would love to see them, at least every now and then, listen to a whole song completely uninterrupted, then listen a second time, sharing their thoughts.
@you_can_call_me_T2 ай бұрын
@@ijustneedmyself I can definitely see that. I think another factor is that some of these Tiny Desk artists have decades in the industry and there are a few whose vocals just aren't the same anymore and they adjust their songs to fit their current abilities. His falsetto was off here, and you could tell it was something overall going on with his voice by the rasp when he was speaking. Of course you would have to have heard him speak before to know that lol. This Woman's Work is one of his most popular songs and it's almost entirely him singing in falsetto. Between that and how emotional the subject matter of the song is, it's no wonder he didn't perform it here. I saw him live at the Kennedy Center in DC last October and his singing voice still sounded perfect. My girlfriend thought he was lip syncing until he started ad libbing. He literally missed one note the whole concert. You should definitely check out his MTV Unplugged performance as well as the studio recorded versions of his songs

I was not a Maxwell stan when he came out in the 90s but his craft has stood the test of time. And his songs are like comfort food.

Totally enjoy watching your fresh first time listener reactions and your feedback is good to hear. Maxwell is a wonderful artist.

Chillld. Maxwell is very distinctive. Don’t let his surgery fool you. Go back to his albums and MTV unplugged

His falsetto is one of his staples. Of course, when you get older that can get trickier. But if y'all look at other performances of his, maybe 10 years ago and he will hit the falsetto.

"This woman's work" would be a good one to react to also "Whenever wherever whatever". One not so popular song "Was my girl" is a good one also, really anything by him would be good. Also, please please do India Arie "Ready for Love", been requesting it for a while. Glad you loved Maxwell!!

I think he premiered Pretty Wings right after MJ died('09). He surprised everyone when he came out, and all of his was cut off and he dedicated the song to MJ.❤❤❤

When you see him in concert His falsetto is still strong He sounds like he was sick or hoarse...so sure it affected the high notes..he said no sleep but it was definitely a little off of you know his norm Just pull up any one of his songs for the clarity and control and you will get the full beauty
