Dementia and food don’t mix well. Here dad simply forgets he ate and believes he is hungry. I didn’t believe he could eat more but he proved me wrong.

I would fly to see my aunt in a nursing home about every 3-4 months. She had dementia and I don't believe she knew who I was. It got to the stage where she refused to eat. I brought her an ice cream treat from MacDonalds, and she gobbled it down and made a big mess, but she was so happy. Ice-cream became a routine part of our visit. I miss her very much.

I was listening to a carnivore podcast last week and in the comments a gentleman realized over C19 that his sister was not able to bring sweet treats to their mother with Alzheimer’s in the nursing home and suddenly she was verbal again. Made me really wonder the impacts of sugar on the brain. I thought that was very interesting. Does diet impact the brain? I’m guessing it has an impact. Or at the very least it’s something to consider.

And he just ate everything and didn’t realize that he hadn’t eaten. that was the same with he’showers. He would would think that he just showered 10 minutes ago, and I would say George just humor me and he would let me give him his shower before his Alzheimer’s. I think he was told not to not to touch anything in the kitchen, and that’s why he had to tell them he’s hungry otherwise, he would have helped himself. I always give the elderly people as much independence as possible so they can have some self dignity, for as long as they are able to serve themselves and still can walk around. he has a lot of money in the bank and his mother retirement and he should be able to use ask of his own money for food and nobody should limit how much food he should eat. He’s not obese, so he does not to be on a diet . He’s able to walk around and make his own food especially as easy as making a sandwich so instead of nagging that he’s eating too much maybe just let him find food in fridge or kitchen. Hunger or pain is subjective and you cannot tell him if he’s hungry or not. And you’re not him to feel if he’s hungry or not . Maybe his condition or medications cause him to increase his appetite . He has plenty of money and when he passes away, his money will go to his kids so why keep all that money and not allowing him to eat whatever is delicious to him and whenever he wants to eat?? That was the money from selling his house and his retirement benefits from all the years he’s been working. He earned it and he should use it instead of keeping it untouched and save it for the beneficiaries or someone else use it and he benefits nothing from it except getting yelled at for being hungry and eating bad tasting foods such as a dry peanut sandwich or bananas! He’s well off to even hire caregivers to take care of him or if he’s qualified with in-home supportive services (IHSS), he should have his own caregiver to take care of him & he shouldn’t have to be begging for food and has to do all the convincing that he’s hungry when he doesn’t have to at all. He took care of his entire family, and all his patients when he was able to, now he’s old and weak and forgetful, he should be taken care of nicely and generously & not to be yelled at for being hungry and throwing a dry, distasteful sandwich at him or an acidic apple to his hungry stomach full of acid already.

@@Themessenger321have you ever been a caregiver for someone with dementia? I have. Dan is not yelling at his dad or depriving him of anything. He’s not trying to keep his dad’s money. Dan is an attorney and likely does not need his dad’s money. Dan is looking after his dad. He does not want him to get sick from eating so much food. Ed has a memory impairment and cannot remember when or what he last ate or who he was with when he ate it. He needs boundaries. A dementia patient almost always does better with a family member rather than a paid caregiver. Ed has the love of family surrounding him all the time and appears happy because of the love and care Dan, Danielle, and Mark pour into him.

This is great. It's good when our Seniors are still eating and have an appetite. I see some Seniors that are so thin and frail. My Mom is 93 and doesn't have dementia . I don't think it matters when you are in your 90s what your food choices are! Just let her enjoy what she wants to eat. We oldies don't have all that many pleasures left, after all.
@cynsationalcontainergarden49118 ай бұрын
Actually it does matter. I noticed she was gaining a LOT weight and complaining about MORE pain. She was also having diabetic symptoms. Dehydration, neuropathy, skin issues, fatigue etc. I asked her Doctor to check her A1C ( blood glucose) and she is now listed as Diabetic in her medical chart. She also has High Blood Pressure, Congestive Heart Failure, COPD and Edema. All of those conditions can be made worse by food choices. Excessive salt is a no no in our house because of the Edema. Luckily she doesn't like table salt but she does LOVE Fritos Corn Chips 🤣 We only buy ONE bag at a time now. I have to give her additional meds when she has excess water. She was hospitalized for the Edema once and she understands how food is directly related to her health. She hates the hospital stays. I indulge her, but CAREFULLY . She is now feeling better than ever with more energy. I was type 2 Diabetic and changed my diet. Now my glucose is NORMAL. Diabetics can lose vision, limbs and their lives if not careful.

My sister who was POA for an elderly gentleman with memory loss would either eat one or two crackers or forget to eat completely. Then came the time where he could not eat at all. My thing is while they can eat, just give them small portions at a time when they say they're hungry. An aunt of mine with memory loss, right now would forget to eat and miss a meal occasionally.

After catching a flu and my sinuses were affected I lost my sense of smell and my sense of taste. Not much of an appetite for a while. So if he is losing his sense of smell that could be why he doesn't desire food. But I realized my senses were coming back when spicy food appealed to me. I could finally taste something even though it wasn't the same as before. I never really was into very spicy food.

Thank you for showing this..I run the dietary department in a nursing home. The dementia unit is behind locked doors, however the residents we have in the general area come in the window ALOT. Like right after a huge lunch. Nursing says exactly what you said, they forget they just ate and are full. I love your video's and such respect to your family. ❤

Do you give extra snacks? Sometimes their bodies are using up more calories based on what's going on in there. Unless they are gaining alot of unhealthy weight, I sure would.
