I remember being absolutely furious when Princess Diana died. I was nine years old, on holiday with my grandparents, watching cartoons with my little brother, and during every ad break the words "turn to a news channel for an important announcement" were overlayed on the screen. Naturally we ignored it but when my grandparents got up they saw that message, flicked over to a news channel and that was the end of cartoons for the day.

I was a live-in carer for my grandmother for a few years before she died at 98 years old, and was in the elderly care community, and I can confirm-- There are VERY SPECIFIC MEANINGS to certain phrases. It's regional and varies a lot, but I heard that kind of thing too. Not exactly the same, but prior to no-fault divorce, an old lady told me once that apparently "pennyroyal and juniper" were a "solution to a bad husband", but to "make sure he's drunk first". She told me this while whispering in my ear, then she started laughing and asked me if we had any more cookies.

regarding the dad went for milk thing, and the old ladies who are about to die will tell you anything thing, from what I've gathered talking to hospice care people, the amount of old ladies that had an absolute piece of garbage abusive husband and just buried him somewhere the moment he touched the kids and never got found out is insane, it happened way more often than anyone is willing to admit or comfortable thinking about
