This was a hard one for me to release to the public. Hopefully I don’t come off as too much of a crybaby lol. These are moments I usually experience in private with music, and to put it on the internet was a bit intimidating. Regardless, I hope you enjoy the video, much love

dullscythe is easily the most "you love it or you hate it" song on the album, and I used to not like it very much, but then someone described it as "a song trying so hard to be made" and that just opened my eyes to the like floodgates of emotion hidden within the song and it's easily top 3 on the album for me.

The dullscythe could also be the musicians ability to make it, his tools have grown dull, representing porters writer's block and inability to make anything he liked.
@jacoblacey7851
@jacoblacey7851 2 жыл бұрын
I think that for me, dullscythe one of the best cuts on the album too. I feel like it does a good job of portraying Robinson's artistic journey going from someone who was stressed, obsessive and disorganized and then later on blossoming into something bigger and more beautiful than anything else in the music industry. In this song, it starts out kinda clunky, with flashes of a potential great melody here and there. But when you have that warm wall of synths that simmers down and you start to hear that piano and synth melody in the last couple seconds of the song, holy crap it's so freakin beautiful.

one insight about the reason porter decided to use a pitch shifter on his voice on this album is that he said when he sang the songs without it, he felt vulnerable to hear himself sing it. so the use of the pitch shifter was a way to help him feel more comfortable express the topics he was singing about so to hear the ending of something comforting switch inbetween the pitch shifter and his normal voice could be interpreted as the things porter wants to say, but he's still taking his time to really express it openly and the way the pitch shifter turns off when he says "i love you" on blossom means hes not afraid to express his love for her obviously lol

Y'all forgetting his roots are DJing and all that not singing, he didn't start as a professional singer rather as one of the youngest DJ/EDM artist, I think he picked up singing to evolve more as a songwritter, and talking about pitching and format shifting the vocals I think it's his person preference because he could have just used auto tune and kept his voice normal(because his normal singing voice is also pretty decent ) but if he does that he will be known more as a singer than an electronic music artist(especially when releasing an album whose production is not really heavy) and I don't think he wants himself to be known as a singer before a producer/songwriter, it's just what i think maybe I am wrong , another reason I think he uses format shifting and pitching is because he wants to give his songs feminine touch which is so beautiful and he doesn't want any other female singer to do that because he writes his heart out while writing a song and making others sing it rather than himself won't bring out the best of the song written.

Dullscythe to me is a song representing Porter struggling with creating music, and eventually getting something melodic together. The title dullscythe reflects that, scythes were used to harvest wheat crops, so to have a dull scythe is to have an unsharpened instrument to harvest with.

a scythe is a harvesting tool, a curved knife, typically used for grasses like wheat. If a scythe is dull, it's infinitely more difficult to harvest, insomuch that you can damage the crop, as well. Dullscythe illustrates the difficulty of "harvesting" in the creative process.

Dull scythe is definitely a metaphor of a song. Dull scythe is I think a metaphor for creative burnout, and when you’re burnt out on a creative medium as your job, you play with the medium to remind yourself of all the fun you can have with it. Definitely not saying you have to enjoy it, I don’t so much, but I appreciate the metaphor!

Hey, just to let you know, you're not the only young adult male crying to these songs, especially not after the explanation. Unfold really hits me hard after comming out of covid with having long covid for 2 years (it's like 85% gone now), and whether the lyrics being me saying it to myself or my girlfriend I can't help but cry everytime, as during those time (and longer) I'm the sole breadwinner of me and my girlfriend and I feel often anxious about that everything we have rests on my shoulder (the world). Really loved hearing you and your dads reaction to the album.

The main beat from "Musician" was actually made from a vocal sample from one of his unreleased songs. You definetly need to look it up it's so cool. Also blossom was literally written in just one night, porter said he just kinda improvised it straight from the heart.

To me, the EDM in Nurture is a special kind of EDM that I can just let all my emotions and energies out of me. The dancing in it is the kind of dancing i do when i just need to let things out. Screaming the lyrics to the sky, and starting a new moment with a heart full of hope that things will me okay.

Some things to point out: 1.) Thank Rika, Porter's now fiancee. If it weren't for her, Nurture wouldn't have existed. 2.) With that said, Blossom is supposed to be a ballad for Rika, it's Porter's thanks and love immortalized forever. 3.) Trying to Feel Alive wasn't supposed to sound like a closer. It was supposed to be an open note, an ever continuing struggle to find the answer to life. 4.) There exists a 15th track, only available to the Japanese version of the album. Its name is Fullmoon Lullaby, a collaboration between Porter and Wednesday Campanella. (Source is from the man himself. He explained all of this the day the album went live, when a listening party was held.)

Porter is the GOAT! His music, litteraly the only artist that I adore this much. I totally can't do without him, his music is the only source of inspiration to me. I discovered his music in early 2015 and before that time, I was like you know a 'I'll see whats going to happen in the future' sort of guy but after having had the pleasure of listening to his magnificent music, I knew that I had to do something with my life, I couldn't afford to be one of those ordinary kids that had no specific aim in life. Music production started to interest me because of him. A while ago, I started to make music for good and now every so often I get on my computer and start making music that I enjoy and whenever I'm demotivated, I listen to his music from time to time and that helps me regain my lost motivation. I'm determined to be a producer like him one day

The reason i click on these types of videos is usually to try and get an idea of how i might see new music when i get older. The way our parents generation (speaking as gen z) understands music is so different. Like for instance in the Get Your Wish intro where your dad goes "it sounds like woodpecker" that made me laugh cause that's exactly how my mom would have reacted if I were to show her that song. To us it's just part of the song but because older generations have no reference they compare the new sounds that they're hearing in electronic music to closest sound they know.

I close my eyes, for once I don't have to try I'm well-wishing for a life, I picture you happy, oh In the weeds, we walked, your hand running through the moss I was so lost in thought, but you were there living You've taken me with you Can I slow the days? I wish that I'll find the faith I'll die and I'll save your place and you'll never suffer We'll stay together Oh, it's not alright, that one day we're all out of time I'll write you another life, I'm sorry for crying It's just that I love you "One day" can't be far enough I had lost my sight So you sang to me the beauty you'd been seeing If I can't stop time I'll build a world where God cannot take us There's no need to think of time But then, you said, "Don't think of the time that's left You're spending it in your head, I just want you laughing" I'm sorry for crying, I just want you happy So at last, goodbye I'll be happy just to have known you And we wished each other well

I feel like you glossed over Do-re-mi-fa-so-la-ti-do as being "just an instrumental"; I think the song is about feeling like you have a lot to express while not knowing how to express what you feel. The full line is "There's too much I want to say so, Do-re-mi-fa-so-la-ti-do". Singing the notes lets him express himself, because words might not suffice. Or another way of putting it would be: The amount of pent-up emotion he has and his perfectionism both prevent him from being happy with lyrics, so he decided to just write an instrumental.

I think it's good but one of the weaker ones still, with how many awesome song there are I wouldn't call it one of the better of this album. Maybe if his overall works or if edm in general, but not compared to the test of this album.

@@doolsonthebeat2149 well, even Porter Robinson mentioned that he thought Mirror was one of his songs that takes the longest to grow on people.
