Earlier I had lost my job due to a fault of my own, depression tends to make you tardy. I felt so pathetic and ashamed in myself that I couldn't do one simple thing, and that's all I saw of myself were these negatives. Eventually when I came across Mirror, it felt like it was speaking directly to me. I felt like Porter was telling me to stop being so hard on myself and putting myself down. "I know what you want from me." I really felt that line... Because I know what I wanted from my "mirror" - to see the worth and value in myself. After that song I committed to writing again, and am close to outlining all my chapters. Mirror helped me out when I was at my lowest and offered a hand to pull me back up to do what I love. It's tough doing work and writing on the side but it makes me happy and that's how I can feel whole. Porter is everything to me dude.

on first listen and even second listen, ‘mother’ hit me like a train. i thought about how much my mother gave me throughout her life. “now there’s an empty room you outgrew” made me think about the room i currently reside in. walking around my neighborhood and my old school (which i only graduated from last year) felt very nostalgic. i produced some of the best memories of my life here despite disliking school. on the walk, i saw the walls of my neighborhood and my friends’ neighborhood. i know one day i’m not going to see this place for a long time and i’m scared of growing up. moving far away is my dream, yet i’m scared of that dream. then, i listen to ‘musician’, a song about growing up, getting a job, looking forward and just running with it. i just get a sense of thrill and inspiration. it rushes through me like a drug and i don’t feel scared of the future anymore. porter has made a successful career out of touching hearts across the world. whether or not you take the lyrics at face value or look deeper into them, his music stands out. i found his music at the perfect time. graduation and quarantine were in the same year. i simultaneously had to grow up and watch the world change around me, so it felt weird. his music helped a lot. whoever’s read this through all the way, i want you to know i love you :) thank you for staying for my little monologue

Mother really encapsulates the feeling of unconditional familial love. Even though the childhood bedroom is gone, and there *is* no place at home left, "Mother" is always there for you. Dullscythe is hard to listen to for the first half. Sweet Time is one of the most heart-rending tracks on the album in my opinion, second only to Blossom. "Since I met you I don't wanna die no more." "I won't spend time resenting the way things are." Porter is the *audience* for this album. Worlds was about escapism, and Nurture is about trying to be normal again after the fallout of success. "And then somebody, somewhere, finds the warmth of summer in the songs you write. Maybe it's a gift that I couldn't recognize [while] trying to feel alive."

I 100%... Feel the opposite as you. I felt underwhelmed by the singles, since I was so used to Worlds & Virtual Self. It wasn't until I heard the Nurture front-to-end that I finally understood the project, and it very quickly became my absolute favorite album in a long time. Interestingly enough, my introduction to this album wasn't by the drop, it was by watching his set in Secret Sky 2021, 4 days after - which I highly recommend you watch here on KZbin since he released it for free. Sure, I have my favorite tracks from this album (incidentally the singles, now that I have context), but I can't help & feel like I ought to listen to the entire project when even one song comes on. It's just so... Intertwined. It's also specifically for this reason that I feel you did yourself a disservice by skipping the singles entirely, rather than just listening to them & then editing them out. As for ranking them... I simply couldn't, for all the reasons listed above. Thank you for reacting, I appreciate the time and effort you put in & I had a lot of fun listening along.

Loved hearing your thoughtful reactions! I'll agree that the album feels underwhleming compared to Worlds, but I think the two albums occupy such different spaces. I feel that Worlds was something Porter GAVE to us, while Nurture is something he's SHARING with us. Worlds was a bold declaration, while Nurture is an invitation to sit with him for a while and look into his most vulnerable mind. For someone whose claim to fame was "EDM with feeling," it was a natural evolution for this album to be so honest and introspective in a way I've never heard in electronica. It isn't Worlds and we all know it, but there's so much value in what newness and vulnerability it presents. I hope that everyone who feels skeptical about it will be willing to give it more listens and let it grow on them, because it definitely does get better and more beautiful once you let go of your prepackaged expectations, and just let yourself sit with Porter and go on a journey with him.

Here are my thoughts, feel free to reply if you like: I think I like basically every song on here except for Blossom and, to a lesser extent, Wind Tempos. However I found myself underwhelmed as a whole by the album because of its lack of cohesion. IMO Blossom is too goddamn depressing to listen to. It just makes me feel miserable. I understand how deeply personal it is for Porter, but I just can't quite get myself to enjoy it. Wind Tempos is a great song for when you're doing homework. Very chill, kind of like you're just flowing. IDK, this album just feels like it's trying to do everything all at once. Chill, sad, upbeat, and whatever the hell dullscythe's beginning section is (robot sex noises??), all in one album. I think that all of these songs are fantastic in their own right, but as an album I just don't feel like they work that well together. I don't see an obvious overall narrative or theme, it's just literally everywhere. Yeah the songs with lyrics all sort of have this theme of talking about Porter's life and stuff, but then there are just these songs with no lyrics thrown into the mix and I don't know how they fit in, narratively or musically. The upbeat tracks, like those released in 2020 and earlier this year, are fantastic. do-re-mi-fa-so-la-ti-do, Mother, Unfold, Trying to Feel Alive, and even Sweet Time (to some extent) are all faithful to that type of sound in the earlier songs. My problem is the tracks that don't fall within that group. Did I enjoy it overall? Absolutely. Porter is a masterful musician. But I am also quite underwhelmed by the album as a whole. I was expecting a bunch of songs that were as much of a banger as the first few he released. No such luck. I'm not even comparing it to Worlds because that's like comparing apples and oranges -- I'm just comparing Nurture's first part to the full album, and I'm still underwhelmed.

The end result of the full album took me off guard. I absolutely LOVED all of the singles and ambient stuff is not really my style. On my first listen through, Unfold was the only song that hooked me in right away. But after a few listens, I fell in love with Sweet Time, Blossom, and to a lesser extent, do-re-mi-fa-so-la-ti-do , Mother, and Trying to Feel Alive. Dullscythe was an interesting experimental track that has kind of fallen flat but I can still appreciate it. I don't like Wind Tempos. It's 4 minutes of ambience and piano, which doesn't hook me in at all and 2 minutes of playing around with processed vocals that I'm not a fan of. I feel like this track could've been left out and nothing would've been lost. I can see why he released the songs he did as singles and I think it kind of sucks that there aren't more songs in the vein of them here because it feels like two ideas (singles, and the more chill ambient tracks) were mashed into one with only some vague themes holding them together. If this had been done as 2 EPs or what Dion Timmer did with a double EP, I think this project would've been stronger. Over all, okay album 7/10

i can totally understand peoples hesitance towards dullscythe, but i think its amazing. it reminds me of fellow feeling from worlds. both of them are very experimental tracks that probably focus a bit more on conveying a message than music. i dont know for sure since im not porter, but thats what im guessing.

If you don’t like more experimental ambient electronic music then yeah, this probably isn’t your album. However, it totally is my thing lmao, I absolutely adore the living fuck out of it but I get the sentiment.
