Guys, thankyou so much for covering the entire diagnosis & repair in an episode. As a owner of a ZD30 I'm now very aware of the issue, how to diagnose & the fix. We brought ours new in 2017, immediately throw in the Provent catch can and secondary fuel filter as I was very aware emission build up and injector damage / failure on these was most probable issues to cause problems, especially crook fuel. Praise also to workshop making all their tools available to Burto, what a legend you added to your team Tyler. I think this episode alone has the potential to make you the stand out KZbin channel, watch you subscriptions take off. New mission for Burto, do not overlook the cause, fix the bloody minor issue that resulted in this whole drama, fuel tank sensor, ¼ tank showing, zero fuel, hence sucking up base shit. Regards, Wealie. PS, Gary can set off wheeling again.

@rockcrawler31 2 ай бұрын
Dude...tanks always suck from the bottom of the tank anyway. This business of "drawing up crap from the bottom of the tank" is a sure sign to not take that persons' advice at all. Cars have fuel filters. They're the first and last line of defence against whatever's in the tank. Yes there was crap in the filter, yes there's supposed to be crap in the filter. It's normal
@ianweal3081
@ianweal3081 2 ай бұрын
@@rockcrawler31you're absolutely correct, however the crap that isn't now floating, bobbing or usually dispersed is now concentrated at the base of the pick up point, sorry, I also know my stuff. It's not crap advise fix the sensor to avoid running outa fuel in the future. You miss the bit where I added (hence advocate) a secondary filter, obviously.
@colinboyd7779
@colinboyd7779 2 ай бұрын
@@rockcrawler31 Absolutely. Pick-up point makes no difference. When you're driving, accelerating, braking, cornering going over bumps and corrugations, the fuel is sloshing around in the tank that much that any contaminates there maybe, are in suspension, in the fuel. Sucking shit off the bottom of the tank when it gets low/empty is fanciful.
@ianweal3081
@ianweal3081 2 ай бұрын
@@colinboyd7779well that's you opinion and your welcome to it. My opinion is if it's water it's not fanciful as it's in far higher concentration in less volumn of fuel, it becomes a slurry that binds together, looks similar to sewage Patrol fuel tanks have a surround around the pick up point, keeps pickup submerged in fuel whilst vehicle is in angles. The pickup is about 10mm off the lower point of this surround base in the tank. There is a mesh around the pickup to eliminate some contaminate but water in slurry form will certainly pass thru it. From there after it's up to the filter and it should eliminate particles, slurry? That's why I advocate a secondary, finer filter with water trapped and drainable. Touch wood I've never had an issue with fuel in the Patrol, possibly due to diligence of secondary filter, but I did with 76 series VDJ, hence very cautious when buying the Patrol. Both you have correct theories but neither are acknowledging the problem only arose when Gary used the last of his fuel. I advise not to rely on the very last of your fuel if possible and rectifying the fuel gauge issue has to go a long way to not repeating the problem. I'd also drained the tank myself, as I did in the 76.

Let me just say I have been looking forward along with many ZD30 owners to this trip to see how Gary's Patrol goes in the Cape York. It has been one of my favourite series to watch but I suppose I'm a little disappointed that the GU broke down. I know doing a TD swap will be great for more content but I think it would be great to give the ZD30 another go with some more modifications. Pre fuel filter, sealed intercooler, boost control, EGT & Boost guages at a minimum. There will be a whole ZD30 community out there that would be keen to see you give her another chance. Keep the videos coming!!

Not sure if its been done mate The thing that turned my faith around in the ZD30 CRD. It runs great EGT's and has way more usuable power was getting stuck into changing out the parts Nissan put in to get these motors past emmission tests etc. I had an injector shit the bed too from dirty fuel travelling up from Esperence. - Replace that leaking intercooler. You can see it leaking bad in the corners of yours. Cant go wrong with a nice 550 datscool front mount intercooler. At least a welded replacement of that top mount - Tillex boost controller to 20psi - EGR mod ;) - Intake clean out after the EGR mod to remove all that caked up soot/oil - Tune - 19-20:1 AFR (Must be done with the boost controller to see 20 psi and stop codes with EGR mod) With the lock up on you'll see roughly a nice 140hp and 440nm (600nm with the auto unlocked) If you want to take it to the next level get a G260/G300 Gturbo turbo and a nice bigger intake. Those stock injectors will get you some great reliable power and the bigger turbo lets it boogie how it should creeping to that 200hp range

Made a note of this list as improvements for my 2014 S9. Trying to work out if that list of mods is money better spent than swapping a 4J or M57, hearing Jessie's sing was inspiring.

You need: 1. Prefilter with a clear bowl so you can inspect for contamination. 2. Main fuel filter (of course). 3. Water in fuel alarm. 4. Spare Jerry can to drain down contaminated fuel. 5. A separator funnel which will remove water and solid contaminants. 6. Carry a spare set of injectors . 7. A lot of patience to drain, decontaminate and recycle the fuel using separator funnel. It also helps to have a pre-electronic vehicle which is tolerant of contam fuel. If you have modern electronic vehicle it's complicated to change the injectors on the road. If anyone's interested there's a couple of videos on my channel about dealing wth dirty fuel from about 5 years ago.

My Dad a old school Diesel mechanic taught Me this Start the engine when cold Gently touch the exhaust manifold around the exhaust port only with you finger or heat gun Check all ports Then you will feel one or more ports is cooler The others will be hot enough to burn your fingers The cold or cooler port is the cylinder which injector is faulty Easy and quick But ONLY do this with a cold engine If you have a heat gun it’s easier This works on any Diesel engine old or new Remember this so you only buy 1 injector not 4 or 6 there too expensive This is from a Diesel mechanic with over 35 years experience And never run your diesel without fuel the fuel lubricates the injector and it will damage your injectors cheers

Been there, done that Tyler … bloody common rail and it’s such fine tolerances. At least you can get it sorted on the run like that. My car ended up under the carport for 2 years and could not get the injectors out of the head, no matter what method we tried. Even a 60 tonne press wouldn’t even get them out. So sold the car at a huge loss just to recoup the $1900 in injectors. Great trip still mate, thanks for shooting and sharing. 👍

This channel is awesome!!! The quality of your videos is at or above network television level. The off roading, 4x4, touring and travel content itself is at the extreme level which makes the videos remarkably interesting and intriguing to watch. Thus you keep the audience glued to the screen. The quality of the footage from video to sound to the myriad of camera angles are superb and vividly describe the situation to the audience. What brings all of this together however is your skill in producing these videos and achieving pro level editing. This is the best editing on youtube save Ed March ( from c90Adventures-my favourite youtuber). Your music choices are terrific and provide an extra dimension to the footage. Finally, you and the crew have serious camera presence. Anyone can be a youtuber, but it is difficult to be comfortable in front of a camera. Especially if you are not a professional actor or media personality. It is this camera presence embodied in the banter you have with your crew or family which breathes extra turbo charged life into your videos. Though as an eight foot tall person myself I feel like Burto is the star of the show 🙂

It's not only common rail diesels that have issues with fuel on the Cape. In 2006 my 3.5L V6 Jackaroo got water with a load of Opal "fuel", so I did what was normal and tossed in some metho to fix the issue. The bloody Opal sh*t made the water/metho mix turn to jelly which blocked the fuel filter and fuel pickup when the hot fuel returned to the tank. Was a massive pain it the arse having to change 5 fuel filters back to Melbourne, and then dropping the tank to clean it all, and also new injectors. The 3.5V6 motor is a 100% bulletproof item normally.

You guessed right with the injectors. Having spent decades between private workshops & dealers shops, there is night & day between aftermarket scan tools & fully updated professional grade dealer scan tools. As there is a Nissan dealer in Cairns, I would always plug in a dealer scan to get accurate information before spending thousands on parts, just hoping you got it right. You got lucky this time. But for the majority of viewers watching this, factory scanners will "always" be better than aftermarket.

You should have replaced the high pressure pump and flushed the fuel tanks out if you suspected fuel contamination was the cause. Where did the 30 liters of fuel go that should have been there according to calculations, that's the question. That's a long way to be out on fuel calculations. It's good to do the fuel calculation on every fill up, which also means that you know where your fuel gauge is at although you shouldn't rely on it in more remote areas. I put a Frantz filter before the factory filter on the Hilux when I went up north, it's great peace of mind and keeps the crud out of the injectors and injector pump.

@@JC-zg4xe Hardly. Nothing wrong with the Patrol 4.8. Barra has to rev too high to make real grunt in a 3 ton 4WD.

Bugger, would be good to get recommendations from Berto what could have avoided this happening, like aftermarket final fuel filter etc

Nissan with it's bonnet up? No surprise there

The orings on the crd injectors ALL do that. That isn't a sign that they've been out.

Egr valve failure. The flap has broken off the valve and rolled down into the inlet manifold. Worth pulling the Egr valve off and check.

I thought the same. Had it happen to my CRD. After many hours trying to figure it out, removed the inlet to the EGR and the butterfly was gone. Luckily Nissan had placed an inspection plate lower down in the inlet manifold that has a scoop attached to the back of it. On that scoop was the butterfly. I guess we will find out on the next episode.

@@benlobanov9934 exactly mate I’ve made a video on my YT channel about it. It the cause of so many miss diagnosed issues but it’s so important to check if that valves still attached to the Egr.

Is it just the KZbin and publicity factor or is this how you Aussie's roll? Indie garages getting harder to find here in UK and I don't think you'd find many who would turn over their workshop like that. Tyler getting his hands dirty for once is a shock, but Burton saved the day. That was a great watch 👍

I was wondering when I watched this what conversations happen off camera to be able to access someone’s workshop. Because I’m in Brisbane and I’m pretty sure if I go to a local mechanic ask if I can fix my own car with their tools they will tell me where to go. Absolutely awesome that they were able to do that though and keep their trip going.

I think if you were a licensed mechanic and knew what you were doing you could almost definitely "rent" a bay from a not so busy shop for the right amount of beer/cash. But 100% being a successful youtuber helps.

Any chance of taking all your breathers and adding a 1/2 psi air supply to positively overpressure the boxes/diffs/transfer cases making it very difficult for water to enter...even through the gearshift housing?
