I'd keep the pony motor as long as it still operating, let Gunner have the whole retro experience. It would be good times operating like Granddad. Another great video, father and son time memories that will last.

I commented the last time you brought up your Dad's 9U...my Dad was sent by his boss at the time to buy 2 Unit 614's and a 56 D69U with 6 $1000 bills (which were still in circulation at the time...it was the only time my Dad held a $1000 bill in his hand...lol)....he ran that dozer for a lot of years....and when his boss wanted to close down the operation, Dad asked if he could buy all the trucks and equipment from him and start his own business....which he did. I was born in 63....so by the time I was 7 my Dad was in his own business and I was crawling in the dirt and grease with him.....as I grew older...I was wrenching on that old 9U and eventually running it...as no one could start it and the track adjusters has frozen and the chains were so loose that if you weren't mindful you'd throw a track. You obviously have a bunch of time on the 9U....so you know what I mean. Please keep the pony....even if you add the electric start......there was a good reason why Cat used the pony....it was for the long term health of the diesel engine...not because the starters weren't available. Just hearing that old D318 fire up gave me chills....they were an AWESOME dozer and am looking forward to the videos on this old girl's revival to come! ;-)

I feel your pain when speaking about your dad. I lost my dad in January of this year. I worked with him just about my whole life. He was a builder, from drywall, electrical, hvac, finish carpentry, painting, insulation, and plumbing. I have so many good memories with my dad. We’d go fishing every Saturday. He’d leave the job site and pick me up from school and take me back to work with him. It made me tear up when you spoke about your dad. God bless you and your journey in life.

my father and i made a deal with a good friend and fellow boss back when i was 12 . we needed to put new clutch packs in it and my dad could use it to clear the back property. we used the big old oak tree branch to lift the back off and clutch packs. we got it all back together and it turns out the hydraulic pump was going bad. in the mean time my dad and mom separated and my dad suffered a major break down and now suffered with a major mental disorder. he was taken away for 20 years. I end up fixing the pump and clearing the back yard as my dad dreamed of doing. fixed the house up so one day he could come home to what he dreamed of. But the Lord took him home early in life . so I have very fawned memories of that old dosser my self. I'd leave the pony motor until it just does not serve it's purpose. One your son will enjoy that dosser and have very fawned meomories of you and him doing this project. Best of luck on this project. Wiping tears from my eye's ....

I am 76 years old. I lost my dad in 1990 after suffering for two years with lung cancer from smoking. He was a sheet metal journeyman and later years worked estimating jobs for a commercial roofing and sheet metal company in Portland Oregon. He was a masterful "jack of all trades". I can remember holding a flashlight or a wrench or a screwdriver before I was even 5 years old. We built cars, painted cars, did electrical wiring, hung gutters back when you had to solder them together with irons heated on a smudge pot. I have many memories of him carrying me on his shoulders across streams and rivers in Oregon on fishing trips never dropping me once. I miss my dad every day. I am excited for you and GUNNAR to share this project with us. Keep the pony motor.

@@masterbates7016 it wasn't a negative thing Wayne said. It was him realizing true emotion. Wayne was describing that from his observation, the whole experience meant a lot to Mr Dirt Perfect. That's all. Don't be a "Debbie Downer" about everything. If you took the time to realize that could be taken different ways, you'd understand that the way you interpreted it isn't how it was meant to be taken. Either way, that's why I dislike texting by average people. Unless someone is a world class author that expresses their words with precision... Heart felt story and a tribute to your dad , some project don’t make sense to some folks but I completely understand the motivation behind it . I got a old John Deere M that my father in law had , he passed away some years back and it’s been sitting for years and just the other day I cleared out the old barn poured a new slab and moved the Johnny popper in with help from a friend and couldn’t understand why I’d put that much time and money into a 100 year old barn and a 1950 tractor. I just smiled and said If you look at everything is about money you’ll never live to spend it. And you just gave me the boost of inspiration I needed to keep me from over thinking if this is best use of my time ! And we built a go kart track in the back for the grand kids lol 😂

Mate thank you for this you brought back memories from my child hood as a kid I'm 65 now but the gully ove r the road from home here in Adelaide Sth Australia was a land fill for the local council and they had a D6 dozer, working there all day ,so on school holidays I would spend all day with the old guy who operated it ,he taught me how to start the pony motor and engage it to the big engine it was a sad day when the gully was full and levelled as the machine went to another site .Years later I started an apprenticeship as a heavy equipment fitter working on Dozers Graders Excavators even CABLE drum as HYDRAULIC was still new in Adelaide and the old machines were better built for rock digging .But my point is thank goodness people like you and Matt as Diesel creek are keeping these old girls alive I'm very envious ,and nice to see the young fella interested .And sorry about your Dad I know what a big hole they leave in the family when you loose them . When my little brother and I were in grade school, my dad bought a D6 9U from a family member and had it hauled home to our farm. My brother and I both got our first dozing experience on that old machine. We had the machine for several years we had a coolant leak that we finally tracked back to seal on the water pump for the pony motor. The pony motor was weak and would just barely turn the main engine with the valves closed, so you had to close the valves and quickly open the throttle. One winter we had big snowstorm and we had to clear snow, so we could load out some corn we had sold. The pony motor fuel tank was empty and the only fuel we had on the farm was jug of mixed chainsaw gas. I dumped the mixed gas in the pony motor tank and got the motor started. After the machine had warmed a bit, I stood up on the track, closed the valves on the main engine and while reaching for the throttle my foot slipped and I missed the throttle lever. The pony motor never sounded so good and did a great job of cranking the main engine with the valves closed. From that day forward we always ran mixed gas in the pony motor! Dad after many years of use traded the D6 to the local IH tractor dealer for a used farm tractor. I will look and see if I can find you some photos of the old machine. The machine was very distinctive, because it had a homemade top over the operator. The top was lower in the back than the front, so it looked like top on Fred Flintstones car.

back home on the farm we have a 1953 Case IH TD9 dozer that my grandpa on my mom's side bought up in Kansas City and hauled it down to the farm in southern Missouri. He used it to build the ponds and roads on the place, even have a video of him cleaning out one of the ponds back in the 60's I think. I'm 44 going on 45 and it's never ran in my lifetime...Dad and I have been talking about trying to restore it and this video makes me want to have that happen more than ever now. Sorry about how you lost your dad! I was about 10 when I was with my dad and the farm tractor got away from him. Thankfully when it started flipping it threw him clear. It broke the tractor all to pieces but he had it put back together. That was in 1951 and I still have the tractor today. It is 72 years old but my two sons and I restored it 10 years ago and it looks better than it did when it was new and runs just as good. It will be part of the family as long as my sons are alive because they value growing up on and working with their grandfather. It is retired as a working tractor but I take it to several shows a year. 1950 Farmall C.

My dad was an operator at fourteen years old in 1945. Six years later his dad retired and gave the company to Dad and his brother. I was born two years after that. Cut to when he was fifty eight and retired due to bad health and anytime a neighbor needed work done he would rent a machine and GETTER DONE. Loved the seat time. He died at sixty in a hospital bed and hating it. I would bet money he would have preferred to pass in the seat of a dozer or front end loader any way he could. Sorry you lost your dad and sounds like too early, but for my dad he sure missed the seat time. Just sayin'. With that out of the way, I cannot imagine taking that pony motor off for no good reason. This is a restore job not for a primary working machine. How rare would it be to have a restored machine with an actual working like it was suppose to work new, pony motor authentic Cat D6? Bet there are not a lot of them left. Keep it just for the historical value unless it dies and you cannot fix it. Hell, I am just about to turn 69 and I can close my eyes and still see myself riding in his lap on a machine like that pulling on the sticks when I was five years old. Some of my best memories and it is like a full color movie in my mind. Hell of a great machine there Mike and seems like a good deal even though it likely cost more in fuel to transport it than most think. Eight hours of driving that low boy to fetch it home had to cost a few nickles. But cheaper than paying a transport company! Good luck on this one. Hope she is as clean as she looks now.

In 87 I was able to acquire a 37 Chev Pu that my aunt and uncle had for most of it's life. My dad and I were working on it together a few years later when dad passed suddenly. I parked it after that and after several life events it ended up in my parents lower garage until a couple of years ago. I have it with me now and I've been working on it. I shifted gears and went in a totally different direction. From a restoration to a restomod. It's taking shape and I hope to have it running next year to take to Back to The Fifties car show in Minnesota. I suspect you miss your dad much as I do. Enjoy your build with Gunner.

Just lost my dad a few days ago and yesterday standing in the shop/building where we worked on stuff or where I was sent to pick up all the tools I left laying around it was hard. Seeing his tools/toolbox’s where he was a glass mould maker for Ball Incon just at a loss myself. Congratulations on the find and hopefully you and Gunter have many memories. 👊👊

My Pawpaw used to operate one just like that. I was his first grandchild and the only one that got to go with him to work and ride with him. I had his old flat bottom boat but I gave it to my cousin. Pawpaw and friend would hang the boat on the blade. They would carry that boat to a creek on clearing jobs so they could fish after work. Thanks for the walk down memory lane.

This is one of your best videos ever. So sorry about your dad, but I am glad you still worked on the dozer and road despite what happened. Getting a new to you D6 for Gunner to learn on is so awesome. All the best Mike. 👍🇺🇸

I would like to see you keep it original. It’s so nice when people restore things back to original to show the how things was at one time. Keeping history alive.

Some time around 1940 my dad’S friend taught me how to drive his D4. He showed me the pony motor and told me that its exhaust went around the intake manifold before going out so that the intake air to the diesel cylinders would be hot. My dad died a year and a half later. The next time I came close to a Cat was in 1953. It was a decrepit gas model with a terribly slow hydraulic blade. I remembered how to steer it and tried to use the blade. After it stalled a couple of times, I gave up. Thanks for the memories. I helped restore a little D2 about 6 years ago and I had fun using the brakes and clutches until my partner in restoring it complained that I would wreck the delicate steering of the “ poor old tractor “.

I can see what that you mean, that old dozer is still in pretty good shape . And it is going to be a great restoration project for you and Gunner, something that the whole family will remember for years to come . I will be looking forward to all the great videos about it and I can tell that you both are excited about it . I am very sorry about what happened to your dad and I know that it is hard for you to talk about . I lost my dad back on August 17,1997 , 4 days after his birthday and 2 days after his and my mom's anniversary . I will see you all later, so take care and stay safe and I am wishing you and Gunner the best with this project . 🤗👍💖💫
