@@EternalResonance I mean this with respect, because I adore this man and think he is a fine gentleman. I would love to have a father that cared that much or even half as much as he cares about his children and family - his hearing aides are probably somewhere with his phone, meaning he’s probably lost several pairs. Although Dan did say, “I wish you could wear them.” So maybe he can’t tolerate wearing them. I’ve worked with plenty of people that have hearing aides, but never wore them. 🤷‍♀️

I think grandpa Ed was probably quite a ‘lady’s man’ when he was younger … he’s such a sweet man now, but probably was not so when Dan was a teenager ! Apparently reading through the lines it seems he wasn’t quite the ‘perfect’ dad and husband then …

Bless you for continued sharing of your journey so others can experience a preview in case the situation becomes real in their family. It's difficult when you need to raise your voice to your parents for them to understand, but from both sides of the conversation. My father refused to believe his hearing was effected. He would consistently be mad at me saying, "stop mumbling if your going to talk to me!" When I raised my voice it seemed to me that my tone sounded hateful, but my natural tone is so soft that he really struggled understand. It lead to a lot of anxious feelings, but I knew I didn't have long with him😪 I am grateful he has been spared from the tumultuous times we find ourselves living. I lost a brother to drugs, and as you well know there isn't one damn thing you can do to help until they're ready to do for themselves. we went through everything that goes along with it. And as far as the hearing thing goes, (chuckling) I'm 65 years of age and most of my friends are in their 70s and 80s. Which none of us can hear worth a darn. So we're always hollering at each other in a conversation. it becomes quite comical when we go out to an establishment. I myself end up with my ear inches from their mouth, which does not go over very well with these Vietnam vets. nine times out of ten, they tell me I talk too much and to just sit down and eat. So I spend the rest of the time trying to "lip-read" making the best of what I've got. I truly enjoy watching your videos and thank you for letting us in your life. Take care from Texas

Actually there is something you can do to help. You can show unconditional love and support without enabling. Tough love and shutting someone out doesn’t work and only sends those struggling with addiction and mental health further into their depression hole and isolation. Go to them, enjoy life with them, just because they struggle with addiction doesn’t mean they don’t enjoy other parts of life. Eat meals with them, go on trips, go into nature and camp, become deeply involved and supportive.

@@anntrope491 looks good on paper? No. It works wonders in the lives of those struggling with addiction. No addict is trying to put drugs before you and family. They’re trying to survive and they’re trying to not be deathly ill. It seems like you’re set in your thoughts and that’s fine but it’s failing anyone struggling around you. Not everyone handles things the way you do or did. There are so many variations when it comes to trauma, mental health, and substance abuse. I urge you to open your mind and heart to try thinking out of your box and really start helping your fellow humans. It’s time to break the stigma you’re furthering with judgments. Also, those people that you’re referring to that are dangerous to their loved ones and abuse them, well in most cases those type of people are that way whether struggling with addiction or not. My brother was addicted for over 18 years. He worked in the music industry. He’s an amazing musician and played in bands, worked stage production/manager, and kept those jobs through his active addiction. Do you know how many times he abused me in any way? Zero. Do you know how many times he stole from me? Zero. How many times he brought “dangerous” people around me? Zero. What’s the difference? He was a good, kind, loving person from the start.

To go through your life for everyone who supports you and your family I admire you . I don't know if it's hard or how you feel but it's remarkable listening to you both. You must be very proud of your Mum.

One of my favorite movies was 50 first dates. To me it was a great testament of real love. Your care of your dad where each day you answer the same questions is definitely a loving, kind and selfless act. I’ve been watching for a long time and am learning each day how much people like you sacrifice their lives to care for their loved ones. Bravo and lots of prayers!

Hints for communicating with people who are hard of hearing--》 Speak SLOWLY and wait until you have good eye contact with them before you start talking. Use your face and body and gestures to help them follow or get clues about the topic. Simple name signs for the people in your family would be a great addition to shorten the number of times you have to repeat things. Point and add directional references that connect to the physical space you are in. You are doing a great job Dan, and your Dad is so lovely. Bless.

No hearing aids necessary. I'd not second guess Dan's care of Ed. Dad gets distracted, or he's sort of not able to follow along because is his dementia more so, than not hearing. Direct communication is working. Ed is a strong willed man. Dan is a saint.

I can so relate to this on 2 topics. Yes, it’s hard being a child of divorce. Very hard. My son was 5 when I divorced his Dad. I knew it would be hard, but had no idea how hard. Now, I had a good reason as he had a long-term drug problem. Here’s the thing though, the “why” doesn’t matter to the child. If a couple divorces due to DV, or an affair, or addiction, or infidelity, or if they just drifted apart & couldn’t be bothered to put the work in to fix it, the child is equally traumatized, no matter the reason. I also totally understand how frustrating it is to constantly be repeating yourself, & shouting because Mom/Dad are hard of hearing. My Dad was terribly deaf at the end of his life at 86. We got him hearing aids thru the Lions Club but he lost 1 of them. My Mom will be 95 in May & her hearing is awful now too. Thank heaven her insurance added some coverage for hearing aids. It was a game changer & eliminated so much stress.

I work for a hearing aid company and I can say if you get the right device and fitted properly you will love them. If he didn't like them he might have bought a cheap pair that wasn't fitted properly. I've worn some HAs testing etc. and if they are not fitted properly they are distracting.

Reminds me of my dad. I was always repeating and saying it a bit louder all the time. The neighbourhood heard what I was saying but he still didn’t hear me. Then he would turn on his hearing aide and then say again WHAT. God I miss those times. He has been dead for over 20 years now so I was smiling and laughing at this son communicating with his dad.

Good for you that u kept dad with you! May God bless you! This is the Lords work! To care for an ailing parent shows the most love. My mom has moderate dementia and it’s so difficult because all the kids work full time! I pick her up 3 times a week and the others fill in. However it’s getting to the point of a place for mom…it’s so Fkn sad to see your parent like this. Horrible disease!😢
