This was like a time travel for me, a priceless treasure for Railfans ! The maroon WDM2's every where huffing and puffing my goodness and GM EMD'S were no where near at this time what a glorious era it was.The humble staff at Pune letting you inside the loco clearly shows the trust and friendliness of the people those days and how times have changed . The steam loco was surely a surprise. Thanks a bunch for uploading this.

Wow..sir..this video is a real gem. Still remember the days when i used to take this train during Diwali holidays with my parents to visit my aunt in Madras (Chennai), As a kid was fascinated with the livery of KK express with the green and yellow as compared to bland and classic maroon. Used to impatiently wait for Guntakal station where I could catch a glimpse of a timeless old steam loco, but my favorite of them all was Renigunta, where the loco changed to Electric all the way to Chennai Central. Well now my travel to Chennai from Pune has been replaced with flights and mostly are of a business nature...so badly want to relive those fond and carefree memories.

Absolute treasure this. Remember being a tiny tot in those days. Getting scolded for venturing near the door by the elders (They themselves stood there !!). Remember bursting out crying to see Papa not boarding the train when it began pulling out of the station and then his magical appearance with some munchies and then his reassuring rebuke to mom. My fav vendor used to be the "Cold drink frooty with the clinking sound". Thank you so much Mani SIr. I will watch each one of your priceless uploads. May God bless you Sir. Lots of gratitude from a grown up kid who still leaves no opportunity for standing on doors as the mom and dad enjoy their retirement.

Thank you so much for such a wonderful account!! I had a similar trip 5 months ago (Feb 1992), on this very train. Memories of that beautiful trip flash in my mind, especially now, upon seeing this video! After Pune Jn., when the WDM2 took over, I was waiting to see the 39-Kmph notch changeover and the "swing" we'd feel in the coaches right then, but was unable to make out. Maybe a few repeated views of that segment of the video will reveal that instant. WOW, along with the loco hoot as it picked up speed, plus the Alco chugs, PLUS the musical clakety-clack was-is a fabulous Aflatoon combination after the Pune snacks!!!! Can you believe this? I could literally smell the air outside the coach when looking through the window in the video with the hoot and chugs playing along!!!!!! Thanks once again, Vijay, with all my warmest of regards, you really help make my days!!

I had travelled on this route with my parents for 7 years between 1993 - 2000. Lovely memories. Everything is so memorable in this video, including the sound of the WCG2 locos and the EMU at karjat. It used to be so funny that we often travelled in AC and I used to cry that I wanted to travel in sleeper because I could not see things outside very clearly and hear the train sounds properly. It is amazing to know you had started the concept of video logging way back in the 90s itself.

Even I travelled a lot in the locomotives during 90's and early 2000's but after that the rules became really strict for the loco pilots not to entertain people anywhere. Also having a Handycam in early 90's was a big luxury that indicates that Mr. Mani was rich at that time too. Also, people always wanted to be a part of a camera reel at that time so they were really helpful and lenient. Thank you Mr. Mani for the awesome footage of the 90's.

Also seen it been hauled by WAP-1 of GZB when my father arranged to get me inside its CAB at time of departure from NDLS, the loco pilot showed me how the horn is blown n also let me do, at the first instance i was scarred to go inside the Loco due to noise of its traction motors but later enjoyed that moment, dont remember how old exactly I was, definitely not more than 10 years old. You have mentioned Dadar-Madras express but it's reaching Kalyan at 3:15 PM. So that means this is the train that became Mumbai-Chennai later on. I vaguely remember it used to start at Dadar because my mother always called it Dadar express. It was regarded as the 'necessary evil' for those of us travelling to Chennai for summer hols from Mumbai. The most convenient train to reach Chennai in terms of timing (unlike Dadar-Chennai superfast which left at night DN and UP train started early morning). But lots of halts and the single line stretch post Raichur often became a crawl. Your capture of crossings brought back memories, lol. When I recently heard about how much of the line is now doubled and electrified, I couldn't believe it. Or that it's going to take just 21 hours in the new timetable. That was unthinkable back then. We used to read about the plans for doubling in the Indian Railway magazine and cynically chuckle, like "onnum nadakaathu". But it's happened! Another grouse I used to have against this train was they frequently sent a WCG2 on the Mumbai-Pune stretch (or maybe it was my bad luck). I loved the look of the WCMs, like most kids growing up at that time. Likewise, it was always a WAM-4 from Renigunta to Chennai. I would look enviously at the WAPs powering some of the more prestigious trains departing from Chennai Central. By the time WCAMs began to regularly haul the Chennai Express, my school days too were getting over and I more or less bid goodbye to long distance train journeys. But reading about how much has changed on the Mumbai-Chennai line makes me curious to want to try it sometime again.

Excellent one Mani sir! With a bonus view of steam engine in operation of course since it was 1992. I always have had a crush on WDM2s the legendary ALCOs especially the jumbos since they were always different from usual ones. Apart from their rhythmic chugging the one aspect which always fascinated me a lot about them was their ear pleasing honking. I have always waited to hear such honking but sadly it seems like railways have forgot to use them again. To be frank I do not like the present day horns of any diesel locos.
