I think the zigzag can be really creepy if you dislocate the elbows so they can bend in every directions, with weird bones and tendons showing off. And with aweful snaping sounds surrounding John...

i think the curvy arm has potential when you animate it, it could move very snakelike and be really intimidating, but i really like the elbow-zigzag idea. its very different from anything else you'd see, and it would be super bizzare and creepy to see that shape in the distance, obscured by fog

Okay but imagine the zigzag elbows that, every time they turn, make a loud cracking sound that alerts the player. And is also disturbing, because it implies its breaking its bones and mending them back togheter.

Some people with connective tissue disorders have extra long fingers and kind of skinny arms. Look for the medical term "arachnodactyly" that might give you some interesting reference images. Edit: Just want to add, I vote for elbows. Curvy bendy arm seems like it could come off as cartoony. But lots of elbows (maybe even bending the wrong way) feels more like body horror. Hard, broken angles feel more creepy than soft curves, don't know why.

And subsurface textures, like bones and tendons , crunchy squishy noises, and the extension of the arm coming from the ground, so the elbows are constantly moving with the hand.

I'd say lets give it a more hoose like feel, like those garden hooses whenever they bend. Make it seem like it is fracturing itself with sickening unnatural things poking, as if the bone inside is breaking with each curve turn or whatever and they are trying to poke out of the skin. That would be more unnerving, both by sight, sounds and concept of a hand and arm moving still despite breaking itself time and again. Like a famished relentless predator who, even disemboweled, will pursue you until it no longer can and you have succeded on that level.

Hey, just wanted to give my opinion on the elbow vs rubbery arm debate! The design of the arm (especially the 3D sketch) really reminded me of the teacher in Little Nightmares 2 (whose character design is absolutelly brilliant), so as to not take too much after her I'd suggest making the arm have elbows. I also think that having the elbows would make the manifestation look scarier, this mainly because (as you once said) scary things often look close to humans, and I think having a flexible arm would make it more "alien" like than humanlike. Well anyways that's just what I think, great video I love them all!

I can just picture it in game, freaking the player out just having it chase them, then the player thinks they out smarted the arm by having the hand flat downwards and pinned to the floor but then suddenly, the fingers bend backwards the other way to grab at the player as like a phase two fight. Idk, this creature idea you've made tickles the right sense of creepiness, great stuff!

I would emphasize on the fingerprints. Then you can show mud fingerprints on the ground acting as footprints, cause if you end up choosing the soft arm idea, would be creepy AF if at some point it starts walking on the ground, chasing you through the forest, but this would be pretty strange with the zigzag arms. They would look too stiff to allow the kind of movement. Keep it on, amazing work :D

OOO Creepy concept! For Elbows VS. Curvy arm, I think a mixture of both could be cool! As in, It move around passively like a snake, curving and such. But when it feels threatened or is taking action it SNAPS into a stance for intimidation! I'd imagine the many sharp corners would resemble thorns or lightning as its shape. The sound effects of bones cracking into place as the once seemingly boneless creature becomes jagged and sharp around the player sounds terrifying imo.

I personally think having the elbows could potentially look better, or at least be a better fit for what youre going for. The elbows make it just that much more humanlike which brings it closer into the uncanny valley which is inherently scary for most people. With the idea of the arm being infinitely long i can imagine just seeing this zigzagging jagged shape going into the distance to infinity, when the arm is chasing you or whatever. Also just in general i think the elbows being a bit janky and jagged rather than a smooth curvy worm is a lot more scary

This reminds me so much of the Baobab trees in Africa. They always looked weirdly unsettling to me. Also, I think the idea with multiple elbos could work, imagine them being rotatable in a half-spherical manner and you are free from the zig-zaggy stuff. You can certainly pose almost circular poses with it.

Many many elbows snapping and zigzaging at a rapid pace as the hand chases John through the forest sounds utterly terrifying. Im just imagining running for your life, not knowing if the earsplitting cracks are trees breaking in its path or bones blindly dislocating in their desperation to catch you. Compared to the rubbery snake-like arm which, I personally feel is over used, the many elbows is much more interesting and would definitely sell the idea of an arm being infinite as opposed to just really stretchy. Love your work!!!! Cant wait to see what else you come up with!!

First: Loving the series, i'm watching every video and really liking the results and learning a ton. But on this one i have to agree with you: it's still too normal. I have a ton of suggestions (i like body horror a lot, so my mind flies): Thumbs on each side; fingers growing in fingers; fingernails/teeth on the palm side of the hand; a root-like arm but fleshy, all distorted, bending and spiralling in itself; and i liked the idea of arm-like fingers too, it's very creepy. Also, multi-elbows is a very cool concept, but the application is not the best, because due to the segment constraints it will end up looking kinda clumsy or limited, and the final result would be a scorpion-tail-like structure. Maybe you could mix everything, it would be trully nightmarish: a root-like fleshy arm with spiralling fibers that moves like a snake and have arm-like fingers with elbows and have teeth on the inside. I don't know how alien you want to get, but i wanted to share my thoughts =]

As soon as you mentioned the multiple elbows, I was like: "Hhhhhh ... *yes!"* And it doesn't have to be zig-zag, especially not in 3d. The way they bend doesn't have to be alternating, but can be totally random. My mind immediately started picturing the way it could move, menacing and precise if it's in the right position, but also jerking around wildly and unpredictably when trying to bend in improper ways. Also, as KODA said: dislocated elbows 👌

i really like both concepts for the arm, i feel the smooth arm would be really easy to implement in game and would almost blend in with the trees if you weren't looking hard enough giving the vibe that this thing has hardened in order to camouflage to close in on its victims. the infinite extending elbows would look really cool though- i have no idea how you would make it move though, whether it were simply sliding forwards with the elbows or extending and contracting like a floating snake of some kind, maybe it could crack and contort as it moves and snap at the player character. the zigzag elbow concept reminds me of trevor henderson's "long horse" you could try looking at that for some possible inspiration.

My thoughts on curvy or zigzag arm: Curvy arm might be simpler to animate. To add to that - curves would give dynamic look and movement, like worms and snakes, that bursting out of the ground creating loopy structures with itself. That's something, that would look sick in action scenes with shaking ground and flying particles, or on the background, especially in slow fluid movements, like a lazy giant predator, that slowly-slowly crawls around, stalking its prey, and then attacks in dynamic fluid motion. But yet curves gives a touch of gentleness and it looks less alien, but that could be just my opinion. Zigzag arm is pure nightmare fuel. I can't imagine it moving fluidly, it would be twitching, snapping, start and stop abruptly, making disgusting snapping sounds whenever it bends its joints. As for the main action, that would be creepy af, when you can't predict what the hand would do, what pose the arm and fingers would take, like never ending twitching seizure appearing in the most unthinkable unnatural poses. But as for the movement on the background - probably that would limit the snake-like predator nature, I think, for zigzaging arm it would be the best to simply be "present" there in the background, everywhere the character goes, being still and motionless except for that "quiet breathing" movement of the arm up and down. And then, when time comes, it would start twitching and snapping, setting joints in motion, bending in ugly forms. I think you could also get a great inspiration from Long Horse character by Trevor Henderson, it has many cool fanarts, that depicts exactly what you mentioned - zigzag shapes in the distant background. So it's like two completely different thoughts, each having it's own traits and movement behavior. I think both of them are carrying aesthetic, just in different way, it depends on what eactly you are trying to pursue in your concept. I personally a fan of the zigzag ideas :D

I think the fingers would be just as terrifying if u had them bending in unnatural ways and every time it bends one it cracks and snaps. I think the hand would be cool if it moved like a dolphin, going under the ground and leaping over it trying to reach John.

I think the elbows have a LOT of potential. You can have the many forearms be different sizes so the zigzag is less repetitive and silly looking. If you make the elbows strangely pointy it would stand out from the meaty arms as well. You could have the elbows bend in unnatural ways (kind of like EDS hyperflexibility). Or you could even make some snapping sounds and have the arm break itself time and time again to weave around trees and create it's elbows. It would probably create some very jagged and unsettling looking elbows as well. I think it would be very scary to hear the gross snapping of bone and see that it has no qualms of breaking itself to get you.

Maybe slap some jerky animation on top of the bending. Like it isn't supposed to bent this way and takes some strength and effort to do so.

It might to be cool to make the fingers end in other hands and them to end in even more fingers. Than introduce the player to only the smallest fingers first before seeing all those huge arms and hands. Just have a buildup to it Also maybe the arm doesn't actually have bones in it all the way, maybe it only has bones at some places and it doesn't in other. That could make it easier to level design with it, less restrictions

I liked the loose flesh look one of the AI generated pieces had I thought that was pretty icky to look at XD although if you go with a look of it bending with "elbows" you could get some really cool, disturbing twitchiness to it. Maybe look up "long horse"? people have done some really cool representations of that kind of look, it's neck kinda has "elbows" to it, see if that's an aesthetic you like/could tweak to work.

i love that the main character's name is john. it reminds me of all of the eldritch horror Garfield concepts.. maybe this is an alternate universe garfield

That's so disgusting, I love it! But imagine if the arm was hairy, in a "peach fuzz" type of way. Like seeing it crawling around and the tiny hairs catching light... Still, looks absolutely awesome and I love your approach regarding horror. Can't wait for the final game.

Up to you but I suggest the movement of the Janitor's arms and the neck of the Teacher from Little Nightmares as reference/inspiration

Ooh i think not only elbows, but strong shoulders perhaps? I feel like people generally when they make a disembodied arm, they keep it to just the forearm, but if the monster had even just one shoulder at the base of it where it's popping up from the ground, i think that could be way more unsettling. Like you're just at the cusp of seeing what horrible creature the arm supposedly belongs to. The arm just keeps extending from the shoulder like it's just growing from there. Alternatively, you could add shoulders on shoulders, like a full arm repeating itself infinitely

Also, a full arm tends to make a kind of curved shape, so if you rotated the arm every other "arm" repeat, you could get the sort of parabolic "curved" idea across while also having strong angular shapes

I looove this. Great work boro, as always! Check out olms. I feel like that color would be a great contrast to the black dirt. A subterranean pink. Like it has never seen sunlight and if it did it would burn. The elbow zigzag might be of use if you want to use the constricts of bones as a way to solve the puzzle. Like say tangling it in trees etc. And it would be pretty swell if the creature decided to say fuck it and break its own bones just to get you. Like the game telling the player "well yes, you are very smart, but you see I don't like that". If there is long bones like that constricting the movement of the thing you could add in all kinds of pops and creaks as the creature moves. Perhaps it dislocated its elbows for them to bend the other way etc. Snake like arm might move too gracefully, and be too comfortable in its environment. Depends really what you look for with this thing. Uncanny ease or foreignness. Regardless, really hyped to see where this leads. The whole idea of the finger just pointing at the player before attacking is hilarious. And that tint of humor makes the best of horror. lol

It would be super cool if the hand tried mimicking itself as a tree and surprised the player.

It would have been cool if long arms would have been teased in the baclgroiund a bit before. Like you see a lot of Black trees growing up in the background but one of em siletly and quickly disappears in the ground, giving you jist a tiny glance at the hand atop before it vanishes undrrground

If it has elbows, why would it have to go zigzag? It can be just straight and bend whenever it changes directions.

to "sculpt" finger prints you can use alpha brushes... find a fingerprint online adjust/fix it a bit or make your own in photoshop and import it as brush texture in blender

You really should get stable diffusion running locally, it's not complicated at all, you have infinite credits (really changes the way you create when you don't feel limited), and you can generate nsfw stuff

Fuck it, give him too many elbows. That bend at different points. Hidden elbows at the forearms that go up and down, left and right, and bend to reveal themselves to the player in the tightest squeezes that they are convinced the hand can't get to. Bonus points for crackly sound design when they bend

I think with the daddy long arm there should be a head somewhere hidden in the forest halfway in the ground that stares at you i walk by it and it grabs you if you get to close.

23:29 just wanted to mention that the wrist area of the forearm is made up of two bones. Here it looks like there might be three bones. If that was intentional, no problem, just wanted to bring it up. Another angle at around 25:49

Rather than keyframed animations, for Daddy-Long-Arms it might be worth looking into procedural animations - animations generated purely through code! It sounds a little intimidating at first, but the principles aren't too hard and it sounds like a great use-case for it. With some basic inverse kinematics, it'd be very easy to implement! (the "FABRIK" solver always worked for me, and the code for it is dead simple). You'd then only need to specify the arm's start, end, and length, perhaps with some special cases for when an elbow collides with an object. There's bound to be some tutorials on how to implement IK in Unreal somewhere out there, but I'd also recommend taking a look at a talk by the developers of Rain World about all the interesting things you can do with procedural animations ( kzbin.info/www/bejne/qYfRpaqpp8-Bm5Y ). It's really great for achieving naturalistic creature movement with very little actual labor.

Perhaps you could some sort of "chain" plugin or something of the sort on Unreal, with big "links" for each of the forearms, to get any length of arm you want? I'm not sure how hard it would be to make the elbows be rigged like that though.
