2 жыл бұрын

I recently received a Ryobi Dethatcher Scarifier from the UK via Amazon. This unit is coming soon to the United States as the P2740 from Home Depot!. This is part of the 18V ONE+ line, but uses TWO 18V batteries, for extended run time.
Unlike the upcoming US version, the UK version does not come with any accessories. shipped standard with the scarifying (verticutter) blade, I wanted the power raking blade, which unfortunately was on back order for some time. After three months of waiting it finally arrived, and I could not wait to try it out. Coincidentally the timing was perfect for my fall season dethatching in preparation for over-seeding, fertilizing, and top dressing the lawns!
I was able to dethatch/scarify my entire front yard, which is a little over 1,500 square feet, on one pair of 6ah batteries, and two pairs of 3ah batteries to finished the boulevard strip, side yard, and backyard lawns.
The power rake is very efficient, easier to use than the scarifying blade, and does not dig as deep, so the unit works a little easier, which in turn gives you longer battery run times. This is my go to blade now.
I was also able to run the unit with the back flap in the up position to see if it made a difference on the performance. It definitely spread the thatch out, and made it easier to pick up with the bagging lawn mower, but there were definitely some times when I was showered in dirt and grass in some of the drier impacted areas.

You don’t have to have the door FULLY OPEN. I think you will find that having the door open 75mm - 100mm open you wont get yourself a “grass bath”. I modified my lawn sweeper to stop the grass/leaves from shooting up and covering me with grass etc. Great video. 👏

You did a great job. My concern is that it looks like Home Depot sells the Ryobi for more than $520 (including 2 batteries). For me, that's too much $ for something I will use 2x a year. Either I will buy and split the cost with a neighbor, or buy a corded tool. Corded seems a much cheaper option.

Corded is definitely cheaper, they need to offer a tool only version for folks who already have the batteries.

you dont like to use the bag on the ryobi scarifier, but then you use the lawn mower to pick up the debris, into the lawn mower bag. Isnt that the same thing? i get that the lawn mower is alittle bit bigger, but still think u could use less time overall with the scarifier bag. just keep a wheelbarrow close by.

The mower bag picks up 4x as much as the scarifier. I rake the yard and pick most up by hand, and use the mower to clean it up.

My biggest concern would be runtime. How big of batteries (and at what price?) would be necessary to do a lawn of 1/4-1/2 acre? Yeah, an extension cord would be a pain to deal with, but at least you would get "unlimited" runtime and could finish the job without recharging or swapping batteries.

Hey great video. I am very new to this and I just bought one of these. Are the two blades just a matter of personal preference? For some idiotic reason I thought the power rake was for de-thatching and the scarifier was for aerating and then for overseeding. Can I just use one for both? I live in the south and I was going to aerate and seed very soon, but do I de-thatch and then overseed and then just de-thatch in the spring again. Kinda confused and was wondering if you could clear some of this up for me. I am a complete novice when it comes to this. Also, I saw your 40V conversion video and this is something you should really consider marketing and making. I know I would buy one. Thank you VERY much in advance.
@DadItYourselfDIY

Great video, thanks. The difference between the scarifier and the rake - the scarifier actually takes out a level of thatch that you don’t want on your lawn and the rake is just a rake, it picks up all the dead stuff but doesn’t actually de-thatch? Is that the correct way to consider it? So it’s not a case of using one OR the other as you please - as they do completely different jobs? Is that right?

I love your videos but sir your not correct in the voltage on this unit. Ryobi's one plus is 18v only and their 40v is 40v only. They do not and will not ever make a unit that's 36v using two 18v batteries not to mention if you put the 18v Ryobi battery on a volt meter it's 20.8v. so you will blow this unit up if you make an adaptor.. this unit works like the 18v lawnmower two 18v batteries but only one is hooked up at any one time. Else they would have just made this on the 40v line up not sure why they didn't do that to begin with..

@@DadItYourselfDIY I link would help but the fact you don't have a video like that I've looked at you page. This unit is a 18v not a 40v your going to smoke this and so is anybody else

@@DadItYourselfDIY yup that's hardly a battery test. And it's still a 18v unit but ok that video didn't proof anything. Have fun blowing this unit up when you make your adopter.

Page 7 in the manual clearly states "Input: 36 Volt DC." The battery port is wired in series, hence why it won't run on a single battery - not enough voltage.

I hate to disagree, but a scarifier slices the warm season grass to promote growth. If you use a DETHATCHER system, you will RIPP OUT YOUR WARM SEASON GRASS. I know this for a fact. Someone told me to use the DETHATCHER cartridge on my warm season grass. What a mistake. I now have a DETHATCHER system to remind me of a stupid lesson learned.

How does the power rake attachment do with the warm season? I could see how the scarifier would rip the tendrils..

The power rake is more for fescue. It's more of a DETHATCHER. The scarifier is more of a verticutter. It slices the runners to promote growth. Think of the grass runners like a worm. When you divide a worm, it is now two. Same process with grass with runners. It then starts looking like a tightly woven blanket. It gets more density or denser.it also removes thatch and allows better watering and fertilizer and nutrients to enter the ground, which is good for a healthy root system.
