My father, a very successful businessman in his Pierre Cardin suits and hand made shoes, never smacked us, never even raised his voice at us. It was a look. And we hated getting that look. It would make me burst into tears, even as an adult. It was a look of disappointment and that was the worst thing for me, never wanted to disappoint him, even in middle age. What many kid's don't learn in today's world (these are usually the kid's that get into the most trouble), is that family life is not democratic, it is a dictatorship. Giving children, who have no life experience, or frame of reference to draw on, any major say in decision's, and allow action's that impact family life negatively, is a huge mistake. Any parent who wants to avoid their responsibility, and/or be the child's friend, is setting that child up for failure.

Reflections of my own dad. He was especially sensitive when any one of his sons back-talked our mom or even looked at her with a scowl on our faces. He'd go ballistic real quick and never waited for an opportune time. Plus, if any one of us stuck up for a targeted sibling against our dad, it was simply utter suicide. By the way, our dad was a construction worker and did hard / heavy physical labor 5-days a week for decades. Disciplining one of us was not hard at all for him. It irritated him, though, when he came home after working so hard to have to get physical with any of his sons. Great memories of our youth ! We miss and love you, dad.
