This man is not speaking garbage, people. This isn't a specs and stats comparison like you may be used to. This is a creative comparison. Don't be turned away by a little philosophy, use it to think differently. Try and understand what Daedelus is actually trying to discuss with you.

I love the philosophy of this demo. It also gives proper respect and context for the TR-8, which is a great machine. He's a true artist who doesn't care about the labels "analog" or "digital".

This dude loves his craft and he seems to be very humble. He is a true musician in my opinion. The way he speaks about humanizing computer music hits home. Its my major concern with where music is going, we need breathe, just like you find in playing real instruments such as how a violin and harmonica can cry or a guitar can sing and talk.

The trick with combining two drum machines / sequencers with some reactivity is one of the ways I sometimes go. That's a refreshing example of moving out of the grid with machines, allowing to set a new central rhythm point to get around.

He just needs to make an electronic version of The Everlasting Gobstopper. At one point, I was either like "this guy loves train wrecks" or" he is trying to show me something I don't understand". Either way for my eclectic taste, those two being so out of tempo with each other was making me nuts. His explanation of breath was good. He seems like he knows what he was talking abbot but every time I was like "What the?!?" was when he had on the biggest smile. Do what you like. There is an audience for everyone. Create. I feel like I should own his 808 though. ;)

More to the point he is a cross between Mr. Rogers, Simon in the land of chalk drawings, and Carl Sagan. A land somewhere between King Friday, Henrietta Pussy Cat and Mr. McFeely in the land of make believe with a subtle hint of patronizing playfullness only Rogers could pull off. His necktie, cut as Simon only could, in his analog synth world chalk classroom. Finally, of course exploring the universe in Cosmos the ship traveling from the macroscopic to the microscopic and everything in-between without the deeper understanding of electrons, resistance, and ohms law.

I'm a massively budget conscious bedroom producer. Over the years I've had several 808 style patterns and ideas floating around. I tried to do some of them on VSTs years ago, and they sounded a bit thin, flat and lacking. I tried to coax my Volca Beats to do some of it and worked my guts out to try to get it somewhat okay -- even though the snare drum on the Beats is definitely not up to scratch for the task, and I had to adapt to make the best of it I could. Got the TR-8 yesterday. And I had my ideas playing through the speakers in less than 3 minutes. In less than 3 minutes from opening the box, I had the first usable drum groove. One that I have tried to create on other machines several times. I know there are other drum machines, with other drum sounds, that are more flexible, more controllable -- but if you want an 808 sound, and you want to quickly get to those ideas -- the TR-8 is the way to go.

this may sound a bit dull , but of all the sounds of the roland , all i really care about is the good ol 808 cowbell , its just that one sound that sounds nothing like what its named after that you heard in so many pieces of music that it just stuck , its the one sound you know the exact name of and its origin

Really enjoyed this Daedelus vid, so much so I just ordered the delaydelus from Control Voltage in Portland.. I own the TR-8 and I've played with a few 808's over the years.. I wish I owned an original 808, but think if I did it would just become a thing to look at rather than use. Where as I use my TR-8 and TB-3 on a daily basis. I also must confess I had never heard of Daedelus until yesterday and after watching this video 3 or 4 times, I'm quite a fan :) respect due

With all the remakes you would think Roland, Yamaha and others would just re-do them PART FOR PART. Korg got it almost right with the Mini MS20 they did a GREAT job on it, just a little cheap for my taste, but it works!
@iNuchalHead
@iNuchalHead 7 жыл бұрын
Some of the parts might not be mfg'ed anymore. Since these vintage devices were analog, everything matters... if you can't get the same kind of tubes or transistors of the same type, made with the same grade if semiconductor or whatever, then that will have an effect on the signal and it is not the same. OTOH, this can all be digitally modeled, but that's lame. Point is, part-for-part, hand-made is becoming more impossible every day. Only Stradivari made Stradivarius violins, and vintage cannot be faked.
@PureAmbientDrone
@PureAmbientDrone 7 жыл бұрын
Good points there, my dad is a Ham Radio guy and he says they still make the parts in other countries for classic radios, but that's radios, I don't know about the MUSIC stuff of yesterday. The cost would be real high if they had to make that stuff again to build them. But there is still a lot of stuff today being made that IS analog and you would think Roland would go analog like Korg has. Roland made some of the BEST gear out there but their marketing strategy is leading them away from analog. Behringer has even made the leap into analog instruments with the up coming DEEPMIND 12 which I WILL OWN :)

Yeah I figured so. I was just yapping about how Roland opted for virtual digital rather than analog gear in their new stuff. I know it would be hard to remake the old stuff perfectly or even slightly. I would love to see Roland make all new analog gear instead of this virtual stuff they been doing. Korg is getting it right.

I enjoyed your description and view of the TR808 and TR8, thank you. I must admit I had never thought of the 808 in the way you described.
