From time to time, my late English wife, while propped up on her pillows in bed, would read me this poem while I was getting ready for work. Brings back such wonderful memories of our 47 years together. Her ashes are in Iver Heath, Bucks., England, where I'll be some day.

I wandered lonely as a cloud That floats on high o'er vales and hills, When all at once I saw a crowd, A host, of golden daffodils; Beside the lake, beneath the trees, Fluttering and dancing in the breeze. Continuous as the stars that shine And twinkle on the milky way, They stretched in never-ending line Along the margin of a bay: Ten thousand saw I at a glance, Tossing their heads in sprightly dance. The waves beside them danced; but they Out-did the sparkling waves in glee: A poet could not but be gay, In such a jocund company: I gazed-and gazed-but little thought What wealth the show to me had brought: For oft, when on my couch I lie In vacant or in pensive mood, They flash upon that inward eye Which is the bliss of solitude; And then my heart with pleasure fills, And dances with the daffodils.

I saw a steep hill next to the road with hundreds of daffodils growing on it while driving on a country road years ago. I was in awe over the beauty of them all. I came across this poem sometime later and it always takes me back in my mind's eye to that beautiful hill. Wordsworth had an awesome talent of touching the soul with his discriptive wordings.

It’s strange how one word can affect a person this much. He was the quietest and loudest person at the same time. In the class, he didn’t talk much but he expressed much, I heard not his voice but his passion. To my high school friend who used to call me daffodils. And told me that i reminded him of daffodils from his garden in childhood.. I hope you know that I will be craving our days always.

Thank you for letting me find this poem after so many years. There is something very special about it. It stuck in many of our minds and souls from long ago school days. Our schools were so enlightened then, compared to what they are today. We had to study Latin, because it was formative and the basis of learning other languages. We had civic education, journalism, music lessons, chorus, band and orchestra. We had culture. These last generations are dumb and impoverished of strength and vitality, brainwashed and culturally ignorant. So sad.

Victor's voice is so mellifluous that I felt as if I was there gazing at the crowd of golden daffodils.

Listening to this poem " The Daffodils" brings back memories of my high school days in the late '50's (am now in my 80's) where we students had fun memorizing stanzas from poems of Wordsworth, Longfellow and other American authors. My classmates and I used to memorize in chorus during break time , or had a contest to find out who memorized the stanza without mistake. What fun days we had. Memories !!!

My Mums favourite poem. The last time I saw her, when my sister and I put her to bed I read this to her and knew it would probably be the last time I would see her as I was living /working in Asia and she was in England. She had no idea who she was, having had her once vibrant memory destroyed and stolen by dementia. And sure enough a year later her body gave up. But on hearing this poem , at the " daffodils" word there came a small shy smile, perhaps at some distant extant memory of who she once was.

A walk in blooming meadow Lying down in balmy sunshine A child's carefree laughter A shy kiss and embrace A sigh of fulfillment A bite of something sweet A good book by my side And what else can a heart desire more, which already feels full to the brim.
