From time to time, my late English wife, while propped up on her pillows in bed, would read me this poem while I was getting ready for work. Brings back such wonderful memories of our 47 years together. Her ashes are in Iver Heath, Bucks., England, where I'll be some day.

I wandered lonely as a cloud That floats on high o'er vales and hills, When all at once I saw a crowd, A host, of golden daffodils; Beside the lake, beneath the trees, Fluttering and dancing in the breeze. Continuous as the stars that shine And twinkle on the milky way, They stretched in never-ending line Along the margin of a bay: Ten thousand saw I at a glance, Tossing their heads in sprightly dance. The waves beside them danced; but they Out-did the sparkling waves in glee: A poet could not but be gay, In such a jocund company: I gazed-and gazed-but little thought What wealth the show to me had brought: For oft, when on my couch I lie In vacant or in pensive mood, They flash upon that inward eye Which is the bliss of solitude; And then my heart with pleasure fills, And dances with the daffodils.

Thank you for letting me find this poem after so many years. There is something very special about it. It stuck in many of our minds and souls from long ago school days. Our schools were so enlightened then, compared to what they are today. We had to study Latin, because it was formative and the basis of learning other languages. We had civic education, journalism, music lessons, chorus, band and orchestra. We had culture. These last generations are dumb and impoverished of strength and vitality, brainwashed and culturally ignorant. So sad.

My Mums favourite poem. The last time I saw her, when my sister and I put her to bed I read this to her and knew it would probably be the last time I would see her as I was living /working in Asia and she was in England. She had no idea who she was, having had her once vibrant memory destroyed and stolen by dementia. And sure enough a year later her body gave up. But on hearing this poem , at the " daffodils" word there came a small shy smile, perhaps at some distant extant memory of who she once was.
