Thank you for this lesson for the Dahlias. Although I had plants in my garden, I expanded it and transferred flowers and plants to one area. It is not as big as yours, but good sized. I am going to use the netting also for the Gladiolus and the maragokd flowers, since they then fall over. I only have 9 Dahlias in a 3x7 area and was going to use just posts, but as tall as those Dahlias got this year, those arch supports look like the way to go. Less chance of the heavy Dahlias plants pull posts inward. I was going to leave the Dahlias in the ground over the winter, but I am going to take them out and put them in bags with wood pump like you did. Plus I am goingvto put tge short ones in the front (north end) so they could not be overshadowed by the taller ones. One Dahlias plant ended up like a bush. Not sure where to plant that one.

Have fun!! If they have more than one eye remember you can divide them, and look out for any signs of leafy gall (check out our other dahlia 101 video for images of what that looks like)!

I did check that video and it was really helpfull so thank you for making the 101 video. i spotted one cluster with the leafy gall and threw that one away in the trash. I managed to divide some clusters where tubes showed eyes on seperate tubers that could easily be removed from the main cluster, however in some cases this seemed close to near impossible since mutiple eyes grew in the center of the clusters were all the tuber meet eachother very risky to go cutting into that so i left them together for potentially more growth i assume? Still not sure how that part works for example if i have a cluster with 10 tubers and 4 eyes, those 4 eyes will all grow out to become dahlia plant right if they are attached to healthy tubers, and the other 6 tubers are basically doing nothing and become a source for rotting and diseases i assume? I did cut away all tubers that were either broken or showed signs of rotting.

I have a tiny garden with dhalias sprinkled throughout. I don't have irrigation running. I have clay soil too. How often/ long do you run your irrigation (mild week, sunny,m but not scorching, and no rain)? How much water would that be per plant? Also, I have bindweed that wants to grow up the flowers. What to do? I have laid cloth and cardboard and it served as an easy place for them to run.? PS love your work and communication style, understanding the reason for doing things👍🏻

Dahlias tubers take at least 2 - 4 weeks before they Sprout 🌱!!! If you’re getting too much rain ☔️ like we are in Wisconsin Zone 5b; they might likely take much longer to Sprout !! The warmer soil, the faster they sprout💯!!

Hello! Just wanted to say I’m so happy to have find you! Your hard work shows with all those gorgeous flowers. In the past I successfully killed my dahlias. This time around I’m really hoping to have them happy and healthy in my garden. I’m still not sure how to separate them as I’ve got big clumps of them with few old stems. I’m in zone 8b with winter rain, snow, few storms and -15-20C. Do you think planting them 6” deep would help winterize them in the garden? Can’t wait to see more videos from you. Excellent video!. I often toured dahlia farm gardens and wondered how far apart to plant the tubers, about the staking, and if the skinny tubers would grow as well as the large tubers. I noticed in your videos that the side buds had not been pinch out like growers who show their dahlias do. Do you pinch off the side buds for bigger blooms? Thank you.

Hello! My Dahlia tubers came too early from the supplier, and they started sprouting in the plastic bags they came in. So i planted them in pots and put them outside but the temperature is still low. Should i bring them back inside even though i have no light in my attic? That is the only space i have to keep them inside...

I just got in from a long day of planting. Lol, Dahlias we’re on the list! I grew from seed so I can stake yet as I didn’t know that. I’ve never grown them before. I hope they can handle heat as you mentioned shade cloth. I’m Z5a, WI, but it can get hot in our microclimate. I’m still healing my finger from pinching it between the handle and wood stake. I used my left hand and wasn’t stable and it was the last tap too-Ugh! It wasn’t good. Every time you tapped I thought why didn’t I use the end like you? My hands hurt bad enough and now I have a deep cut. We have several chances of rain, but they never know how much and I was trying to get as much planted as possible and we need rain bad for this sandy soil. Oh, I didn’t pinch them and the are about a foot. Is it too late? Well the IB kicked in so I can move to get in the shower😂

I’m in zone 8 and I can attest they do very well in heat! I think they actually LOVE heat like tomatoes and peppers! 😃

They can handle heat! I only use shade cloth when they’re young before the leaves have grown in to shade the roots. Sometimes our spring temps shoot up to 100 so I throw it on to avoid stressing them and decrease our water usage 🥰

99% of seed dahlias are not good cut flowers

The really interesting thing about dahlias is that is you grow them from seed is they never grow “true to type”, they might have some of the same characteristics but every seed grown dahlias is a “new variety”. So the only ways to know what dahlias you’re growing is by buying tubers of a specific variety, or saving last years seed grown dahlias. There’s a lot of really cool videos here on KZbin about seed vs tuber grown dahlias and dahlias breeding, I really like Floret Flower Farms videos, she explains everything really well, (and of course Blossom and Branch!). I hope that answered your question!
