@TheMiddlesizedGarden5 жыл бұрын
I will definitely cover it, but my understanding is that you can never hurt a rose by dead heading it. Pinch off the dead flowers with your finger or snip with secateurs down to the first place where there are 5 leaves (as opposed to 3). I also dead head a row of roses with shears, just clipping along. They have always come back!

Hello, its the first time I’ve planted dahlias, I planted the tubers in soil that is quite heavily clay like, I put some bulb compost under and over them, is it likely that they’ll grow or should I remove them and replant them elsewhere? Thanks
@TheMiddlesizedGarden2 жыл бұрын
I think it's probably better to leave them for now, and see what happens. If dahlias don't do well in your soil, try growing them in pots, but I don't think there's much point in surrounding them with a different sort of compost as it will be absorbed into the soil fairly quickly. Heavy clay soil is a problem if you get lots of rain because dahlias don't like sitting around in damp, cold soil. But see how it goes!

@Wadadli685 жыл бұрын
@@isabellelaval7294 Hi Isabelle. My first (and only) attempt was with a packet of unnamed mixed dwarf dahlia seeds my mother sent me! I just followed the instructions on the packet and they germinated and grew on very quickly. Unlike many other perennials, they have flowered the first year and are continuing to bloom profusely without fading even in the intense heat here in Portugal. Large single flowers with beautiful colours. Attractive to pollinators, I'm very impressed. Apparently tubers develop from the same plants over the years. You'll be pleased to know that the seeds are quite big and easy to handle so give it a go :)

@@Wadadli68 thank you for letting me know. I suppose that it's too early to plant the seeds for next year but I'm looking forward to taking my time to plan the entire flowerbed height, colors etc. It'll be a modest first effort but new beginnings keep life interesting. I'll rewatch the video to take note of which flowers grow well around the dahlias. I love cannas and sedum so I guess that's lucky. I'm sorry yr country suffered from those horrific fires a short while ago. The 2 heat waves here in France this summer were terrible too and now we're suffering from drought. We'll see how things go... 😊

Some plants are more inclined to develop mildew, so need extra care, like thoughtful watering. Often it is caused by watering plants directly on the leaves, rather than at the base, & by doing our watering late in the day. We can easily research which plants are more vulnerable & avoid them - especially if living in an environment which rains a lot, & has cool night temperatures, or, as with roses, enjoy them by using extra care & by observing them closely after a rainy period. You might try a spray of a whole, organic milk diluted with water as soon as rain has stopped, no matter the time of day. Be sure to do it head to toe, under leaves & on stems & on surrounding soil beneath the shrub. After a few days, if it looks awful you might get a bucket of warm water & a wash cloth which has been soaked & squeezed out. Wipe down any obvious cloudy spots & leave the rest to protect the plant. It will get rained on at some point & remove any residue. For roses & any plant, you may try pruning to eliminate branches growing in the wrong direction, like growing towards the interior of the shrub,especially those crossing & rubbing on another branch, causing stress & over time, injury. Depending on the type of plant, prune to encourage a somewhat open structure. Mold spores are in the soil, so when it rains, or we water with a hose, often the water splashes soil onto the lower leaves, spreading the spores. If you spot mildew early, cut it away & don't let the cut leaves drop to the ground or brush them up against healthy leaves. Spray the pruner or shears with Alcohol or Peroxide & wipe the blades between each cut. You can also spray the area where each leaf was removed with alcohol or peroxide on tbe stem. Try to not let the mildew spores get on fingers, by holding infected leaves with a paper towel or toilet tissue square. Fold it around the leaf & place it in a bag. You don't want to compost these or leave any lying around which may have died & fallen onto the soil under the plant. You might consider removing any lower leaves close to the soil & spray the soil, stems & grass or nearby plant leaves to reduce any living mildew spores on top of the soil beneath the plant. DIY drip irrigation is easy to install, which slowly releases water into the soil. Give it time to make it's way down to the root system. Check how long it takes water to get to the depth of the plant's root system. Some root systems are shallow, while others may be 2' deep or more. You can time how deeply water has penetrated your soil by just after watering, note the time or use a timer, counting up. Inserting a dry stickinto the soil right after watering will tell you how to set the timer. You might also reduce the chances of mildew by knowing which plants need more space to allow for better air circulation. This can also prevent mildew from spreading so easily, from one plant to another. Avoid watering late in the day. By watering 1st thing in the morning, the water that does land on the leaves, has an entire day to drip off & be absorbed or evaporate before evening comes, & with it, often lower temperatures. I've read that with ambient temperature often being lower overnight, it may cause some stress & thus vulnerability to some plants when wet at cooler temperatures. At any rate, mildew in the soil or air may be drawn to the moisture on nearby leaves. Mildew grows where there is enough moisture, & it's spores move on the slightest breese. There are fungicides to kill mildew, but using them is very dangerous to the ecosystem. It gets into the water table & moves along to aquadic & other creatures including fish, newts, salamanders, toads, frogs, snakes, etc. In the immediate environment, it kills beneficial insects, & may sicken pets,small children, the elderly, & anyone downwind of this dust. It's very harmful to the lungs if breathed in while up close while being applied. So if you choose to use it, use it with extreme caution. Wear gloves & a respirator. Throw gloves away or wash them, & don't get any on clothing. Don't toss the clothes into a hamper, just to be sure. Consider rinsing off anything observable with your hose, then hand wash the clothes & rinse very well. There are home made methods to research, but prevention is always our best option.

1) I'm in zone 8a US. My macrophyllas are in bloom in May and the first half of June. If they need a good pruning, I always prune them no later than October. If I waited to prune in March I would have no blooms.I have made that mistake before. 😭I'm sure that it is fine to just nip the very ends in March as you explained. 2) Proven Winners emphasizes that the paniculata hydrangeas, especially the largest ones like Limelights, should not be pruned any further than 1/3 of the stem. You need to keep 2/3rds of the old woody stem to help hold up the huge blooms in wind and rain. Naturally, I made this mistake as well with my 6 paniculatas. Thank you for this video. I LOVE all of your videos.

My dahlia plants are about a meter tall and one of them started to flower well while another that is not flowering well. I see white dusty leaves, is it a fungal disease? How can I treat this? I m in MI USA zone 6b.

We have the sandiest, most freely draining soil possible and dahlias die if we leave them in. Temperature is a big factor, not just moisture.

Such good information. Your gardens in the U.K. are so beautifully different from the USA.

Hi, we have 2 really well growing ( litraly have done nothing with them even the children would pick every flower off the Bush and they just keep flowering ) they are massive and I want to move them to the front garden. When is the best time for me to dig up and move? I was wanting to do this now but not shore if I should hold off. Thanks in advance x
@TheMiddlesizedGarden4 жыл бұрын
I would dig up and move in spring - I had complete failure when I tried to move dahlias in autumn. The most reliable way might be to dig them up in early spring, pot them up and get them well established in a pot, and then plant them in their new space once the frosts have gone (around May, usually).

2 or 3 bowls of beer overnight will drown many slugs and snails that is if it doesn't drown you first.
@TheMiddlesizedGarden5 жыл бұрын
Yes, I often think about that one, but am a bit too squeamish to dispose of drowned slugs!
