How awesome! My favorite colors are deep shades of oranges and golds....so when you say "Sahara" , "Terra Cotta" and "Brown Sugar"...my heart sings~♡~ I am intimated by dahlias but you make it look so easy! Hey, speaking as a professional, what's your opinion on her arrangements? Any tips, comments, criticisms or suggestions for her? It would be interesting to hear/read from a professional perspective.
@Sullivan_Owen4 жыл бұрын
@@Bamboo4U2 I've been a designer for 10 years and I've tried to offer Laura some feedback and suggestions since her viewers are likely following her lead but unfortunately they don't seem to make it through all the comments. This design is a bit more balanced than the last one with the sunflowers, that one didn't have enough foliage and structure, the flowers were all be stacked and crushing each other. This one is a beautiful palette but the use of foam means you can just stick the flowers wherever and in my opinion you don't really learn how to build well designed pieces. Designing really requires a methodical approach to building a palette of shapes, textures and foliage to act as an armature for the special flowers. You also use a lot more flowers when using foam so it's wasteful besides being not great for the environment. I personally think this design is too tall and blocky for the size of the vessel and think it's a vessel better suited for a lower, wider centerpiece style design. I don't think Laura means for these to be instructive but it would be nice to include more information on designing well made arrangements, not just pretty and I would like to see less foam which late summer flowers really do not like at all. In my experience dahlias don't make it more than a day or two in foam, it causes air blockage. But like chefs, there are all kinds of floral designers and my style/taste is certainly not for everyone. I would have used the hyacinth beans and actually recently did in one of my designs cut from my garden.
@Bamboo4U24 жыл бұрын
@@Sullivan_Owen almost everything you said about the foam I knew or intuitively understood except the air blockage. I knew nothing about that. Good to know. The other, more esoteric elements of design (scale of the vessel, structure of the design and the palette selection) are completely lost on me. That's when I started doodling and wandered off in art class, lol. I do have an appreciation for the art of it. I'm just lost on...well, nearly all of the composition. Thanks. Great to hear/read from a professional.
@zaria57854 жыл бұрын
Sullivan Owen thank you for saying something about the hyacinth beans. I’m not a pro but I have made flower arrangements and bouquets for friends, events and weddings. I would’ve added the hyacinth beans to the arrangement also. It gives such a nice contrast to the color selection going on in the vase. I do think the pedestal that the wooden bowl is sitting on gives it enough height to appreciate each flower in the arrangement because it’s allowing light in. Probably better for how it looks on camera. I do appreciate you stating that more flowers are needed for an arrangement that’s lower. I too appreciate learning that the air pockets in the foam may shorten bloom time. Thanks for your input. 🙏🏻
@deborahbarone14654 жыл бұрын
@Sullivan Owen Laura has made videos about how much she dislikes foam and told us of the danger it is to the environment. Laure prefers to use a wire or other woven or bunched up chicken wire frog. Positivity is Laura and Aaron’s goal, which they achieve every video. Growing up in our house we had what was called the Thumper Rule which goes like this: If you can’t say something nice, don’t say nothing at all!!!

Gorgeous flowers, Laura. You showed some of them with spots of dust and that reminded me of all my flowers and veggies that are covered in ash from all the fires here in the Rogue Valley, and other parts of Oregon and California. We've got ash all over everything. (Sigh) But, my plants are still alive and I'm not complaining. I have family who lost everything to the fire; escaped in his vehicle with only the clothes on his back as the flames devoured his entire home. We helped other family members evacuate their homes last week, too; luckily, they didn't lose anything. I am grateful the fires are being put out, the smoke is going away, and the ashes will soon stop falling all around us. We could sure use some rain and drought relief here in the PNW.

I really needed it. You are a rock star!

And to all those who habitually rant about how much money Laura spends on plants (despite this being her business), this was probably the least expensive (cost-wise) arrangement she's ever done. Sure, there was the cost of the infrastructure/investment of the drip tape and staking materials but they're all reusable. Next year, her only costs would be seeds and new tubers, if she likes. I'm not big on dahlias but the pom-pom variety is spectacular, at least from a geometric perspective. It's remarkable nature creates such perfect structure in flower blooms, huh? Can't wait for the tree-planting video....

She said no, only because she couldn't bring herself to give up her flowers. Anyway, I was crying on my way to school because of it, and a lady up the road whom was outside and had a garden full of blooming roses asked me why I was crying. I told her and she said that she would have a bunch of flowers ready for me to take to my teacher the next day. It was massive. And so beautiful.
