Join me in a long tour of the 2020 dahlia garden. Lots of really beautiful cut flowers are blooming. Perhaps, I'll show more as the season progresses.
Thanks for visiting the Freshcutky organic gardening channel. In the garden, I will answer some of the most common "gardening for beginners" type questions I get, including growing flowers from seed. Growing greens, growing flowers, and planting beautiful organic food is something I'm really passionate about. Many ornamental flowers and cut flowers are TOXIC. ALWAYS do your own research and take responsibility for the plants that you introduce around your kids, pets, and everyone else. Use common sense when handling plant materials: wear gloves, always wash hands, avoid contact with face, etc. NEVER consume any plant which has not been positively identified with complete certainty to be safe and edible. Before planting anything, research to determine whether specific flowers are considered invasive where you live or if there are laws that apply to their planting in your area.

What is "@freshcutky"?
@freshcutky documents the pursuit of my goal of one day owning my own cut flower farm. Along the way, you'll see random projects, cooking, and of course - growing stuff. I'm not an expert, and would never claim to be. There's always more to learn - this is my journey. The purpose of my blog, and other social media accounts (including KZbin) is to share ideas. I do my best to offer information that is useful, but reliance on that information is strictly at your own risk and NOT a substitute for professional advice of any kind. Dahlias are my grandpa's favorite flower. He passed away in June 2021, so I enjoy seeing your lovely garden and remembering the good times! The close up shots especially remind me of the times long ago when he would walk me through his gardens, and show off flowers that were larger than my then seven-year-old head.

This was lovely to watch, thank you! I've only been trying to grow dahlias for the last couple of years, and not with a whole lot of success. I originally ordered David Howard online, but the tubers came shriveled and moldy, so I just went to Walmart and picked up whatever they had available: a mix called Purple Rain and a bag of Creme de Cassis. I love Creme de Cassis, which is a lot like your Creme de Cognac, only maybe a bit more purple rather than burgundy, with the top of each petal being much lighter than the underside. I ended up with a white and purple striped dahlia in the mix which I think is Bristol Stripe, and it's consistently devoured by caterpillars. More evidence for your theory of bugs targeting white dahlias. None of my darker flowers have been nibbled.
@TONYAwiththeflowers
@TONYAwiththeflowers 3 жыл бұрын
I think I've grown Creme de Cassis in the past, it's beautiful! It always seems that the bugs favor the white and yellow flowers in my yard. I'm really excited for another season of dahlias. Thanks so much for watching! :)

Amazing collection! I’ve noticed with the Islander variety, for me at least, bloomed a vibrant orange/red during august but shifted to a pastel sunset color when the weather cooled down. I guess the amount of water they receive changes the pigment in the petals.

you know I didn't realize how much I love flowers until I watched your video about zinnia , I tell you ever since I been stalking your channel LOL . and no matter how long the video is in the end I'll be like "oh no" and I start another tutorial . I had bought the Asiatic lilies and the zinnia seeds from one of the sources you mentioned before and I planted them about 10 days ago the lilies start showing a Tiny leaves but the Zinnia didn't come up at all, since everyone says it takes few days to come up, I assume something went wrong, so I went ahead and try it again this time with the paper towel method and they've been in there for about 3 days so far hoping it works . Being very new to this I would really appreciate it if you can name me a few flowers that will do well inside with partial shade or in the balcony. keep doing what you doing, and thanks in advance Miss shay

I had a company send almost all the wrong tubors and I got a Mystery Day that was a nice surprise that I didn't order also! Do the Cafe au Laits bloom faster than the Cafe au Lait Royals? No signs of buds from my Cafe au Lait Royal (zone6) but all the other dahlias around it had blooms and I am wondering if I will have better luck w the lighter color version?

I am sooo glad I’m not alone in the snafu with Holland Bulb Co! I ordered 3 Pooh (just so cute) and 3 Little William which is a red/white pom. What I received was 6 (and this took me all season to figure out - caused more underlying stress than I needed) Mystery Day! They did offer to replace the tubers this coming year or a merchandise credit which doesn’t expire, which is the option I took. The MD actually started out purple/white and then later in the season was more fuschia red/white. I’ve read that dahlia genes aren’t very stable snd very affected by environment. But I’m sure they sent the wrong varieties and wonder what to do with all these tubers I didn’t order.

I have a small space in my yard for flower gardening. We don’t get frost where I live (Southern California). I would love to plant bulbs, but worry that if I dedicate the area to that, then I won’t be able to grow anything else there all year. I know you have a smaller yard also, so looking for your feedback on how you grow tubers/bulbs and seeded annuals in a small space? Thank you!
@TONYAwiththeflowers
@TONYAwiththeflowers 3 жыл бұрын
A lot of the bulbs, I grow as annuals. For example, I replant new tulips and ranunculus each season. I would look for bulbs which naturally have a dormant period. Interplanting might also be a very good option. Good luck!

There are two anemone dahlias called Polka = they are completely different colours and flowers. I had the one you have - I loved it. Not many blooms tho. Some anemones type dahlias have the bigger flowers like your Polka - the other Polka is more like the smaller traditional anemone ones. and it does have a lot of pink and yellow i think. The polka we have is vey cream with red edged petals.

Gorgeous dahlias! I've been adding to my collection and this video was helpful. My only question/concern is how many you've bought that weren't labeled correctly or labeled at all. I understand you bought the big ebay mix and that's totally understandable, but what about all the others? Is it where you order them from? Kind of concerning. I personally like to know what I have and what's growing. Makes me nervous ordering online seeing so many of yours wrongly labeled lol.

The one you called "Steven David" is not correctly named. Steven David is dark orange with yellow tips. The blooms are about 6" and it gets a good 4.5' tall. I did totally enjoy your video despite that it makes me want to figure out how to cram a few more in my garden!

My summer weather is usually in the 90s, hot and humid, but the dahlias really seem to struggle. It isn't until the weather cools down some in fall until they really start blooming well. Thanks for watching!

I'm going to start going through all the tubers this week. I haven't check on them in awhile, so I have no idea what condition they're in. If I decide to do a tuber sale, I'll definitely post it on KZbin and on IG. 🌱🌱🌱

This may sound silly, but I would like to plant some dahlias in rows next . Do you grow the rows from East to west, north to south or does it even matter?
@TONYAwiththeflowers
@TONYAwiththeflowers 3 жыл бұрын
You know, I've never even thought about it. My rows run east-west, just because that's the way my yard is situated. If you plan to leave them in the ground during winter (if your zone is warm enough) I would definitely avoid a northern exposure. Good luck!

Where do you recommend buying tubers from?
@TONYAwiththeflowers
@TONYAwiththeflowers 2 жыл бұрын
That's a difficult question. It seems like quality can definitely vary each year. I usually use the dahlia addict website to help find the varieties that I want. Also, wholesale groups on Facebook can sometimes be good. Thanks for watching!

Gorgeous! Do you have to worry about Japanese beetles in your area and do they eat dahlias?
@TONYAwiththeflowers

Yes, I always have problems with Japanese beetles. However, they seem to leave the dahlias alone. They mainly attack the rose bushes in my yard.

I have no not ever grown 1 dahlia and loved it. I’m curious, I noticed ants on yours during the video, do you just have a lot of ants in your area or do the dahlias seem to attract them? I’d love to grow them next year but we seem to get bad ants in the house every spring.
@TONYAwiththeflowers
@TONYAwiththeflowers 3 жыл бұрын
I've never noticed that the dahlias specifically attract ants to my garden. I think it is likely that the ants are found on the dahlias because of their nectar - much like peony flowers. Hope that helps! Thanks for watching! :)

@BloominIvy
@BloominIvy 3 жыл бұрын
I’m going to answer since no one did. I think that is fairly accurate about the red ones but not every person who grows them puts them up on KZbin or other media outlets. I personally think they are pretty but I would want to create a separate bed of maybe just red and white. I’m not sure yet. I didnt order any red for my garden though I’m not positive since they wont be blooming for a few months and just ordered them earlier this year. Didn’t purchase any red anyway. Not my favs.

@@BloominIvy Thanks! I enjoy red flowers so much. And, though I'll make my garden how I prefer, was just wondering if red was "passe" or if there's some kind of color-theory reason people don't like to use it. Maybe it just draws the eye too much??
@BloominIvy
@BloominIvy 3 жыл бұрын
@@dormetheus you could be right. It probably takes your eye away from the lighter softer ones. I have seen some really gorgeous red though and here lately I'm see deep purples with them. THAT looks amazing together. Seriously thinking of doing that next year, early-start in my greenhouse. ;)

Your growing conditions can sometimes affect height or coloration, but make no mistake, dahlia companies sell you anything just so they don't lose a sale. I found dahlia varieties on the websites of many online companies, and bought some of them to replace varieties I had lost. The end result was disastrous because none of them looked anything like the online pictures, which were perfect representations of what they look like. Many of these companies are deceptive. Many of the ones mentioned in your video are dishonest, to put it mildly.
