My secret to non-stop blooms, super phosphate, Jack's fertilizer, ground eggshells, and compost. I have non-stop blooms from this method.

Like you, I enjoy trying to create my own new varieties by taking seeds. However I’m not keen on blooms with open centres, ie I prefer fully double varieties. I’ve found that if you leave any open centred types around, which every bee in the area will visit, then you will end up with seeds that produce open centred seedlings. So when I start the seed making process I firstly take off all the flowers of any open centred varieties, so the bees have nowhere else to go. Then I remove the petals around the middle of the blooms of fully double varieties to expose the centres where the pollen is hiding. I’ve found that seeds produced by crossing two fully double varieties are much more likely to develop into fully double seedlings. If you’re interested I’ve made quite a few KZbin videos showing how I do it.

Good video, well done. Out of probably a hundred KZbinrs and other ‘garden experts’ I’ve watched over the years, you are the first one I’ve ever heard mention to sanitize the tools!! This year I’m pre-sprouting my dahlia tubers as you demonstrate to avoid them rotting in my heavy clay soil and to reduce earwig and slug/snail pressure. Hopefully they’ll be healthier and bloom more prolifically. If you ever have a Sandia Brocade tuber for sale I’d love to buy it!

Pre-sprouting was such a big help for me. I had so many problems with rotten tubers and slugs before. I hope it works well! I am new to planting Dahlias. I want to plant them in pots as well. When you leave them in a pot, do you have to take them out and separate the tubers? Or is that only for ground planted ones? Hope this doesn't sound like a stupid question, I'm not sure if potted ones are handled different than in the ground. Thanks!

@@lorigoodwin269 Hi Lori I don’t take my tubers out of the pots. I live in California and our weather is warm. We don’t get a hard freeze ever. I just leave them in the pots. When they’re dormant I cover the pots with a large clear garbage bag to protect them from the winter rain. Once a month I give them a small drink of water. In the spring I uncover each pot and fertilize them and begin watering them. Blessings to you and your family 🙏🏾

My planting date is March 15th in the meantime I'm preparing beds, controlling snails and building a new compost pile. Currently Dahlia's are on a high shelf in front of the window in the garage sprouting. I've grown Dahlias for years but I didn't know they produced seed until last year when I discovered little black specs around my vases. With improper tubers you could sprout them, then root a cutting to produce a good plant.

Don't be afraid to cut a good portion off the top once they have several sets of leaves. They don't transplant very well when they get too tall out of the ground, just because they have a tendency to break so much. They recover very well though once in the ground.

I'm so excited to see how your seeds do! I've been trying to research if they will grow in zone 9b 🌵 but haven't had much luck. I think I may be out of luck with dahlias. I've been here over 20 years and have never seen a dahlia growing in the desert. Anyone out there zone 9b? I do know we have alkali soil here with a high pH of around 8 and dahlias need 6.5 to 7. I'm wondering if I work with the soils pH, if I'm able to properly grow them here 🤔

Dahlias really seem to struggle with the heat. During the hottest parts of my summer, they won't even bloom. It isn't until cooler weather arrives that they really start to look beautiful. I’m in zone 9b, Northern CA, and I’m able to successfully grow dahlias. I have found the single varieties perform the best, as they seem to absolutely love the sun/heat here and bloom their heads off. They attract bees like mad! The dinnerplate and decorative varieties do bloom, but they are better in late September-November when the cooler weather arrives. Hope that helps.

Ahhhhh, the Dahlia Seeds... Dahlias... Dahlias... Dahlias... I've been having The Great Dahlia Seed Planting Debate with myself ALL Winter! In my mind, I go from one scenerio to the next... A.) Should I start the seeds indoors so they will have a head start? OR B.) Should I just wait until the middle/end of March and direct sow them? C.) Should I take the chance on, what SEEMS LIKE a mild Winter, will it continue? And I should I start the seeds in a milk container outside, around mid-February? I know people do this method in colder regions than mine! (Zone 7b/8a Central Texas) Altho, it STILL seems risky to me! Mostly bcuz I've never done it. And finally - D.) I am strongly leaning toward the combo method of Direct Seeding, along with a cut plastic bottle over top as a mini greenhouse, AFTER my last frost date. Or maybe early, in mid-February? This seems like the safest method! (altho, it's the slowest...) And so, nothing but debate has been going on! This debate has created a long phase of procrastination. Which has turned out to be LUCKY bcuz of 3 things: 1.) I don't really have any room in my tiny house for seed starting. 2.) This Ice Age weather we are now experiencing! Geez!! I'm in Central Texas, and the entire state has been covered in snow for the past 3 days!! (I've NEVER seen that before!) And even a pretty good layer of ICE 4 days before the snow!! So, had I started them outside, they FOR SURE would be gonners at this point!! I mean, even my established chives are not going to make it thru this one! (I'm still crossing my fingers for my Fall planted garlic tho...) And - 3.) Even if I had found room to start them indoors, they surely would have expired this past weekend. Our 1st power outage lasted 7 hours, and the house temperature got down to °56 degrees for most of that time. Now, on our 3rd day of rotating power outages, while we humans are fine, (and getting used to it), the house just isn't as warm as it should be for seeds. So here I am looking for the bright side of things! (as if that sunshine bouncing off the snow isn't bright enough! 😎) HOW do y'all snow peeps do this every year?!!! The Great Debate continues! I still have those Dahlia seeds in their tiny plastic packaging, awaiting my life giving decision. They are resting quietly on my bedside table. It's a special spot just for them!! Bcuz this extremely cold weather has lasted soooo long, I find myself wondering just HOW LONG WILL THIS ICE AGE LAST??? I realize all y'all Northerners are rolling your eyes at me right now! And you're right. I'm a Winter Whoos!!! I think Dahlia's and myself might just be made for each other tho... We sure have a lot in common. ▪︎I'm a warm weather girl, ▪︎not HOT weather, just warm weather. ▪︎I wither in the extreme heat. ▪︎I bloom brightest in the Spring & Fall. ▪︎I'm just not made for ice, and snow! ▪︎Sometimes my husband has to dig me out of my bed too! Hope y'all are staying warm this week ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

There are a few different options that people use - some clean tools with a bleach solution, some use ones that don't contain bleach. Whenever I'm working with the dahlias, I usually have a bucket with cleaning solution in it and rotate between a few different pair of clippers. It's a little bit of extra work, but I assume it is worth it in the long run to help keep the plants as healthy as possible. Thanks for watching! :)

Another great video! I have some Dahlia seeds that I've winter sown. Hopefully I'll have some this year. I had a small single, daisy like Dahlia that I bought at a garden center last year, so maybe something will come from that, I doubt it, though.

How far apart do you plant your tubers? I want to start a cutting garden where i don’t really need to plant ascetically. I just want to fit as many plants in as I can. Today I bought a few bags of tubers at Costco . When I was at home I opened the bag to count (I have had load luck in the past) any how there was green mold on one of the potatoe looking thingies. I cut it off but since the tuber isn’t big to begin with I wonder if it’s worth keeping. How many of those potatoe looking things does a Dahlia need?
@TONYAwiththeflowers
@TONYAwiththeflowers 3 жыл бұрын
Dahlia tubers can vary greatly in size, depending upon the variety. Even small tubers can produce nicely-sized plants. Each dahlia tuber needs an in tact top, neck, and body. They will also need at least one growth eye on each tuber. When buying clumps, the skinny neck portion of the tuber is often damaged. If this is the case, that singular tuber won't grow. Technically, each in tact tuber can be divided and will produce a plant - but special attention has to be taken to make sure it will be viable. Hope that helps! Thanks so much for watching! :)

Loved your video! When pre-sprouting dahlias, do you recommend giving them light or keeping them in the dark? I’ve watched videos where they recommend the dark so that the tubers focus on growing roots instead of reaching for the sun but others use grow lights.

I don't have much experience with growing from seed, but everything I've read indicates that tubers will have formed. The tubers can definitely be saved and replanted. Good luck! :)

@TONYAwiththeflowers
@TONYAwiththeflowers 3 жыл бұрын
No, dahlias are frost tender. I, personally, do not plant dahlia tubers when the soil or weather are cool. It always when seems that the tubers are much more likely to rot when planted under these conditions. I have a video called, 'Sprouting Dahlia Tubers,' that might be helpful. Thanks so much for watching!

@@TONYAwiththeflowers can I sprout it 2 months before the last Spring frost?
@hmh3808
@hmh3808 3 жыл бұрын
@@hungsblomsterhus399 I do ! - but I take the first and sometimes second sprouting stem for cuttings ....otherwise it gets too leggy and long without pinching back (or using for cuttings) by the time the ground has warmed up and is ready for them.... they only really need a month in a warm room with a good window / plant bulb - so you have to judge based on your indoor conditions... The first three or 4 inch stem with a set or 2 of leaves is a perfect size to make another tuber ....just cut -leaving a bit of the stem on -right where it comes out of the tuber. ...it’ll sprout again and then You can pinch that back if it gets more than 6 inches or so before planting time. I start this early because I am in Canada with a short growing season in 4B and I just got sick of waiting till the fall for flowers!
