It's still a great place for hobbyists to pan for gold. It takes skill and patience but anyone can do it!

I have family in Dahlonega, I was actually there this past weekend from Philadelphia. I’m 31 now, but started elementary school at Long Branch Elementary way back in 1996. Being back there this weekend, this small town has REALLY grown! Holy crap! But to be technical, Dahlonega was the home of the 2nd gold rush in the US! In fact, you can still find gold in the steam behind my grandparents back yard. My cousins and I would pan for it as kids!

So much history in Georgia ! (Todd history too) The state capitol building, covered in Dahlonega gold, is always a nice touch when you whiz thru Atlanta (commissioned in 1958) Great Sheila tip, I left a size 5 leather Kids while spelunking, so always have your hiking boots Mining would be a great rally activity. My girl scouts & my children have always found some great gems throughout the decades. Thanks for taking us along, and yes, see Dahlonega at Christmas (with all the lights & snacks )

I saw Dahlonega on I 75 so many times but never realized how cool it is. We have a friend who owns a gold mining operation in the Colorado mountains. He laughs at people who say things are gold mine.

If any of those gold coins exist , then it would be illegal , because the U.S.A. confiscated all the gold in 1933

They closed a native site in the Chattahoochee national forest a few years ago. The rumor was, they discovered a vein of gold ore (locally the purity of the gold is almost 100%) so they wanted people kept away while they dug up all the gold and concealed the evidence. The native site was built in the style of the Mayans. That's actually quite common here in Georgia. The local Indian languages have 50% shared loan words with Mayan. Some researchers believe that the gold of the Mayans and Aztecs (that Spain eventually stole) came from Dahlonega, GA. Dahlonega used to be a fringe of the empire mining colony of the Mayans.

Thanks for visiting our little tourist-oriented-college-town! Another little tidbit is that there is a tiny amount of gold in the streets, where they used local gravels to make them. :) You could also go to Helen Georgia, which another tourist town in the Bavarian style.

There are only two coins in existence that are held by private hands. You can also tour consolidated gold mine in Dahlonega if you didn't do that already. When it's Christmas you can ride horse drawn wagons around the square.
