THIS VIDEO: Photographer Daido Moriyama is a restless traveler and has created works in cities around the world…like New York, Barcelona and LA. When you watch videos of them working, they have a focused hungry look as they prowl the streets for images that go to the heart of the space that they are working in. Their unsettled natures drives them to unearth a record a brutal beauty from the street - capturing scenes that were considered taboo or neglected by mainstream society. Moriyama sought out the marginalized and hidden aspects of urban life, documenting subcultures, back alleys, and the surreal. His images typically contain harsh contasts, lots of grain and tilted angles - so he’s probably the polar opposite of say, Ansel Adams. He’s not interested in technical perfection, he only cares what the image feels like. Petersen is probably driven by his heart and gut, while Moriyama, was also motivated by a need to explore photography itself.

Fantastic work, and lovely to watch it flow by listening to your informed thoughts about it. I felt the theme of Farewell to Photog might simply be the chaos of life.

I had been looking forward to this and wasn't disappointed. It isn't an aspect of image making that I can attain, depicting a world that I somehow learned to avoid. It is necessary for deep seated reasons that I generate structured images but these images of that other world are powerful and totally absorbing. Your commentaries seem exemplary and draw one in.

Okay, I'm probably more influenced by Kurosawa that Moriyawa. I think I sort of struggle with the grainy high contrast school of Japanese photography from post WWII. Maybe I don't get the sequencing. Having said that, I think this vlog is the best of the multiple ones I've seen on Moriyama !

Thank you for an interesting video. I like the hard BW approach but I hate a picture in books that’s on two pages and split in the middle. Why do that?

Yes, sometimes it really doesn't work. I suppose photography has limited options when it comes to publishing, so maybe he got bored with the standard approach.
