We tidy the unit, waffle, I break something and, sadly, lose quite a lot of footage to sound issues. Standard HubNut then. We'll take a look at the engine and size up the swap project next time.

Let Miss HubNut clean the engine bay. Not for practical reasons, but to bouy her enthusiasm for cars, HubNut and this car in general. For the same reason that I let my nearly 4 year old torque up my Visa wheel nuts this morning (I did check them.) Whilst fitting some sound proofing to the engine bay of my 2CV today I couldn't help but clean the bulkhead up a little, speaks volumes to me that I felt compelled to do this but have never done anything like it on my previous 40 or so cars. .

"I don't know where I put those". Pure Hubnut! Let's hope they are not in one of those 'safe' places we all put things in, only to forget a day later just where that was. I lost many a thing like that, I am beginning to think that putting things safe is a bad idea. Anyway, I totally agree with Miss Hubnut, clean the engine bay, 'it will only get dirty again' is a poor excuse!

Nice one Ian, it's always nice to hear the banter between Miss HN and yourself. Construct a plan with realistic intervals, add the usual unforeseen unplanned tasks that inevitably occur (lost or missing parts per chance?) and intervals, update the task dependencies to include more unforeseen tasks and intervals, add yet more unforeseen unplanned tasks and carry on round the loop. Compare to initial plan then realise that there is a lot more to planning than the average person realises. It is a good idea to put a plan together though so when things go a tad HubNut you can see what it's done to the rest of the plan. It's a tad concerning when you realise that the planned next Christmas trip will now 'possibly' start in the following June!. Keep up the great work Ian. Looking forward to Elly having the rear wing fixed and that tiny job called the engine swap. Include removal of the old engine, removal of the clutch from the old engine, new gaskets and shipping etc to the plan. 🙂

I keep trying to neaten up my garage, and I have to a degree, but just as I think I will actually finish, another project leaves things a mess again. Seems hopeless but I keep trying. I only own one vintage car but I have found it to be incredibly helpful to keep a battery minder on my battery. Not only does that mean the battery is ready when I am but it also means the battery doesn't freeze. The battery also lasts much longer since it isn't good to let batteries go flat. Just thought of that when you mentioned those old batteries.

At around 8:00 - All you need is a broken key extractor. They can be bought for a few pounds from Law Lock Tools (and elsewhere, but Andy Law is really nice to deal with, and he delivers promptly), and those keys will be out of the locks within a few seconds. Asking a locksmith to do the job will cost you a lot more, and you'll still not have the simple tool for the next time it happens.

My wife's family had a vacation house. The tradition for holidays was that cars were parked head in like in your garage. People would want to leave, never in any order, so cars where shuffled to get to the departing party's vehicle. One Christmas a younger family member suggested nose in angled parking. A line of parked cars along one side and an aisle along the other so that any car could leave at will. It worked brilliantly for a couple of holidays but then the old system came back. It was surmised that the car shuffle was a durable tradition as it had been a part of great grandpa's departure ritual, helping to dig out the parting family's car, one last goodbye and final waves as the car retreated up the driveway. Since you have to dig the Sauna out maybe you could set up angle parking along the outer wall and an aisle cum work space on the opposite side. High use cars could be parked in the aisle, easily moved to free the work space and get to any car. Or maybe not, if this has become a traditional part of HubNut content...🤔

Daihatsu are great cars, I don’t know that exact model which you have but the Daihatsu cars that I have owned have been amazing cars. I have a thing about 3 cylinder engines, but Daihatsu also make 4 cylinder engines. I had a Mira Avanzato import from Japan which I bought in 2010, it was a 1997 car that looked, drove and smelled like a new car.. a friend who came with me to collect it from the importer though it was a new car. It was an automatic with the 4 cylinder 660cc turbo and the hood mounted intercooler scoop, that was the smoothest engine and the nicest automatic transmission of any car I have ever owned.. and I’ve owned a LOT of cars. A great car was the Applause, it looks for all the world like a saloon but it’s a hatchback, get a high spec model and it’s such a sweet car.

A lesson hammered into me (not physically) by my very organised Father (OCD?) when home on leave, "A place for everything and everything in its place". Along with "clean up as you go", and "finish one job before starting another". It does work, things do get finished quicker as less time wasted.

Clean the engine bay! A clean engine is a happy engine, as i like to say. A dirty engine is harder to work on and the excess grease and oil will damage rubber and plastic parts and shorten their life. I have a 425,000 mile truck that looks awful. The cleanest part of it is always the engine bay.

Anything can be a cable nipple if you just believe. the brass chunk out of a choc block connector screwed down, an old nut and bolt, a crimp on wire connector. not necessarily wise to use on the road since sudden loss of power is undesirable, but at least to move a vehicle it would do.
@richardhemingway6084

Yup. More improvisation needed. I was thinking the same thing. I have terminated cables with chock block inserts before. As long as there is not too much force needed, like a throttle cable and not a brake cable.
