This time, I fit the water pump, while Miss HubNut cleans the engine bay. I also manage to get the exhaust manifold off, but it's not in great shape. And yes, it was bloomin' cold! What happened to Spring?
Delightful HubNut goodies can be purchased at hubnut.org or at our Hoodie store: hubnut-store.c...
Or, support HubNut at / hubnut or via Channel memberships: / @hubnut

For the trolley, use the pallet!!! Saw one half off, leaving the blocks intact on one half, then screw the castors onto the corners of the pallet, and there you have a much stronger trolley, onto which you could then screw the board on top of and use for many things of rolly-aroundy business... :P

Excellent video, thank you both 😊 I sympathise with tools sneaking off having done a pair of timing belts today. By the end of the second one the pile o tools was monstrous! The fight doing the 2005 Octavia vRS's in the car was silly, all down to a truculant engine mount. Wrong video I know but I was gutted to miss the NEC show, really enjoyed the reports though, hope to see you next time!

Don't forget to tighten the crankshaft pulley bolt, you know, the HubNut method of "I'll do that later". Turn a bolt in one of the gearbox bolt holes, support a screwdriver against the sprocket of the flywheel, that's how you block the crankshaft from turning, if you know what I mean. Good luck with it.

Ahhh, the joy of seeing Miss Hubnut in charge and insisting on doing things properly, Ian, "You are not the messiah, you're a very naughty boy." That trolley board was a disaster waiting to happen, just cut it in half equally, glue and screw the two boards into one, add wheels and go for it, it'll be really strong and useful. Happy days.

Nice one Hubnutters! Great to see you both taking time during the 'operation'. I've lost count how many times I've had to take things apart again to fit something that was fitted out of order. The infamous little A series little hose that went from the block to the cylinder head comes to mind that required another new head gasket to refit the head. Later ones were accordion style that could be scrunched in at a little risk.

They don't paint colour in certain areas because the primer is the main protection when it comes to paintwork, some underbonnets are primer and ground coat (makes the colour cover better) some are colour without lacquer, it's the way of the world now, even when we repair new cars we have to duplicate this so the vehicle looks factory .

I recently tried undoing the crank bolt on my Anglia by putting it in gear and standing on the brakes and it didn't work. My suggestion is when you put the gearbox on then you should be able to use a screwdriver or a flat bar to lock a tooth on the flywheel through the starter motor hole.

Even cheaper Aldi/Lidl option - save £18 by nicking a shopping trolley and cutting the top off. Or maybe not..... (although you might find the odd one in a local canal). Loving the banter. Noting how the M10 socket reappeared from the parallel universe only to be immediately replaced by the M12 - there must be a version of Murphy's Law to cover this. You are an amateur mechanic - there is such a thing as a hopeless professional mechanic - often to be found at a main dealer. Agree with you about Panda underbonnets only in primer - a good reason why we bought two Hyundais. Crank pulley bolt - Car SOS yesterday showed a Corrado engine rebuild which had gone wrong when the flywheel bolts weren't tightened up. If you're ever feeling down about quality of work done just watch a YT Just Rolled In episode.... Try working to Watch Wes Work standards rather then Vice Grip Garage though (although even so he knows what he's doing).

Watching you put that water pump pulley on, I first asked the laptop screen whether you should be doing that first rather than the cambelt cover, but you just carried on. Then I took a closer look and started yelling for you to stop so you didn't have to redo everything you just did.....but again you didn't listen. 😁 I know I am 13,000km away on the other side of the world, in a different hemisphere and all that, but you really shouldn't ignore someone who's really trying to get your attention and save you some time..... Glad you figured it out before you put the crank pulley on and everything else though - THAT would have been very embarrassing.....and I might have had apoplexy in the interim! 😂🤣 Great to see the project coming along, mate. Slowly but surely - that's the best way to do it. Gives you time to see your mistakes before you make them 😉 All the best to you both.

Make a list of things like "crank pulley bolt" on a piece of cardboard and put it on the windscreen. Add things "to be done later" as you go Cross them off when done. Saves a lot of grief! Also, if you grind that manifold it will look like the Brecon Beacons. A machine shop could put it on the milling machine, or use a coarse sharpening stone to keep it flat.

The paint palaver reminds me of a mate here in Adelaide (South Australia) bought a new XB Fairmont V8 coupe in 1974. Got hit up the backside a few months later and the crash repairer discovered that the rear panel between the tail lights was body colour paint over bare metal. The crash shop checked a few other body panels on the car, same deal. He got the damaged rear fixed and unloaded the car pronto!

When you undone that nut I was hoping there wasn't going to be a cross thread or snapped stud moment. If I come across rusty bolts and screws I tend to pre penetrate oil them and leave them for a while to soak, usually they come off ok especially when is a bolt that has been in a wooden bodied vintage railway carriage for over 80-90 years.

I make a 50:50 mix of caustic degreaser and kerosene. You can either spray it on or brush it on. And most workshop manuals have a picture of the factory tool to lock the flywheel. It's basically just a piece of 4 mm plate that has a point to lock into the ring gear, and a hole to bolt it to the bell housing bolt holes. (very hard to use with the motor still in the car) I had neither so I just put the car on the ground, put it in gear and put the handbrake on and just guesstimated the torque (me swinging on a meter of pipe was about right). it never came loose so that was a win. But you are making good progress there, taking your time and not breaking too many things. Just keep going and you will probably have it all back in running in a few weeks. Excellent work there you two. 🙂
