In 80's and 90's and before, such resurrections were a matter of necessity and regularity. Everything else would be working, but annoying design faults, poor paintwork, bad production techniques etc. meant that maintaining & repairing bodywork was a constant and persistent feature of car ownership and life.
@RikAindow Жыл бұрын
Great video and effort taken to repair this car. At the end of the day, I don't care about repair vs replacement values if I like a car. Who are we to judge what is and is not viable for someone else who also loves their car just as much? If someone is willing to pay for the work to be done, why not let them go ahead and do it? If people constantly looked at repair v replacement costs, we'd have far fewer classics around as every car goes through the "not financially viable" stage at some point in its life. Classic car restorers should, in my opinion be more on board to repair things at this stage as there will become a time when things do rise in value.

Just spent the last few days in Wrexham North Wales driving a VW UP courtesy car whist my ID3 was in for some fettling. The UP was the best small car I have ever driven, small, simple, nimble and dead easy to drive. If you can get a good early one with no rot then that would be a far better vehicle than the Daihatsu and far easier for Carly to drive. No point in being sentimental, Japanese cars of that era have a design life which you have exceeded by some margin. I would view it as a death trap.

Cut the cord now and scrap the car. Once rust like that has set it you'll find it needing welding every year. I have a customer with a MK2 Fiesta and he refuses to get rid of it. Every year he spends £400-500 on welding as the subframe and sills quietly rust away.

As someone who's renovating a vehicle that has deep and irreplaceable sentimental value to me, but will never be worth what I'll end up spending on it, and on which I'll have spent hundreds of hours by the time I've finished - I completely understand the mindset of why you'd want to keep this car on the road. Hopefully this balances out all the "why not scrap it" (or worse) comments from people who don't get it.

I know exactly how you feel. I'm trying to get my dad's car fixed (driven into last year, insurance wanted to write off, offered peanuts) but nobody is interested for this reason. The thing is, it was the car that we went places with mum, who is sadly no longer with us. I spent a lot of hours with dad going to and from hospital in it, and... yeah. Memories are important, and we aren't emotionless robots.
@Teribus1311 ай бұрын
I have an MGF in the garage that definitely fits into this category. In truth, if I could go back in time and know then what I know now, I would never have started fixing it up, it would've been sent to the scrapyard. Here I am now, though, I've started fixing it up, and my mum gave me a sum of money towards fixing it shortly before she passed away. I'm doing way more work than the car is worth, but it's worth so much more in sentimental value. My biggest obstacle is motivation. I'm really struggling to find the motivation to crack on with it. It's now been off the road for 2 years 😭

@@MrManBuzz Morris Minors, Minis, VW Beetles, Morris Marinas, Ford Fiestas (mk1, etc), Austin Metros, Peugeot 205's, etc were all cheap disposable cars of their time, some not even built to last a few years, nevermind a decade or more, yet look at all of them. The 90's Vauxhall Corsa is starting to see people wanting to collect them as they're nostalgic for their first car, etc. I think this Daihatsu will become the 'DAF 66' type of classic, small but dedicated following as their numbers dwindle to a fraction of the already the low starting point. I think they have been rare enough and are still different enough from the average small car in the UK to catch some people's interest while the Corsas, Fiestas, Saxos, 106s, etc get picked up by the nostalgic group. They're all also going to be the last of the small light car with all that's on sale now being heavy, bloated faux-by-fours all weighing in at twice these cars ever where. Hit enough stuff with it, or get it stuck trying to park or pass another vehicle on a narrow street enough times, and many will reminisce for the small city cars again.

That's the issue of loving an object, you have to choose between the logical route of scraping the car and then buy another cheap car and keep going or sink a lot of money and time to repair it just because that's what you want. And i believe both decisions are ok, it depends on you what you want. Im ok with the idea of scraping a car and then searching for another one if the car is far gone, but some people have an attachment with a particular car, i personally have attachments with a certain brand or model, but the car itself has to be good for me to like it, the process of restoring something that is "gone" is a process that I don't like, I prefer to keep a good car in good condition and improve it over time. But some people have other tastes and preferences and we have to respect them.

There's no possible logical reason to repair anything as rotten as that unless it's a classic such as an e-type which is worth a fortune when restored. Sentiment is the only reason, but why not if that's what you want? The only concern is what is the state of the other hidden parts of the car, which probably aren't much better, only time will tell. As a 70-odd year old ex-mechanic who spent his youth welding up rotten cars (which they all were in those days 50s/60s) with oxy-acetylene as there was no mig then, we'd have scrapped one that bad even in those days!
