I’ve been a panel beater for 34 years. Why do I enjoy watching this stuff so much 😂😂 I have a series one rs turbo but I’m glad to say it’s never seen the rain from new so it’s nothing like this 1600i 🤪 You’re doing a great job. Hats off 👌

That's my experience, I had a fabrication workshop and the mot garage just down the road kept sending vehicles to me for welding and as I was just starting up I took some of the work and quite frankly it was not worth doing, people would come in want a fixed price to weld up a small rust hole and before you knew it I had to make half a car. In the end I had to say no, but some people were very insistent, the answer came when I upgraded my mig welder to a 450 amp machine , it just would not weld thin sheet especialy not with 1.2 wire. But I was glad when the garage owner retired and I no longer had to send people away which is bad for business.

Well done guys on some fantastic work. After seeing how bad those previous repairs were and how much rust you've had to cut out it makes you wonder how bad the rest of the car is.

My experience with these cars is that they're quite happy to rot out completely in the bulkhead, battery tray and front footwells, while remaining in good condition everywhere else.

This reminds me of the time I worked in a small garage in 1968 I was 20 years old and I was the only person that could weld, gas welding and brazing when I welded jacking points I always put extra steel into it to add reinforcements. But I have to admit welding rusty cars is a thankless task.

Used to do loads of these battery trays back in the 90s. When new, the battery had a plastic ‘lid’ fitted over the top of it. It was there to direct rainwater flowing off the scuttle panel from running over the battery. Most went missing when the battery was replaced. Without it, the battery electrolyte would overflow rotting through the bulkhead below the battery.

Oh dear, You"ve just bought back memories of a MkI Escort I had the "pleasure" of working on back in the early eighties. More holes than body, no exaggeration. I still don't know it didn't just fold up. The owner, a friend of a friend, eventually saw sense and scrapped it. Escorts were worth nothing back then.

Enjoying the work you're doing and the great encouragement you are giving to your apprentice Mojo. Really pleased to see such an enthusiastic and promising young man in an environment where he can develop his skills with a supportive mentor. Well done. I'm not so enthusiastic about the use of cardboard boxes as a shield against grinding sparks: having given myself a scare starting an unexpected fire (fortunately extinguished quickly) I tend to be more cautious. Some aluminium foil works well. Best wishes.

I had a 1983 RS1600i in 1992. Very minor rust and I had it all repaired. But a horrible car. Such heavy steering, the solid tappets were so noisy and never settled down, and quite bad torque steer, are my abiding memories. It looked great, though. The seats were comfortable, and I heard that they were not Recaros, but made by a German company called Scheel.

Beautiful fabrication, Lewis. I've been a massive classic Ford fan for as long as I can remember. My first car was a 1968 registered 123E Anglia Super (105E) that my Granda bought for me at age 11. That started a stream of Anglias, Mk1 & 2 Cortinas, Corsairs, etc. I can confirm that "Ford" stands for "Full Of Rusty Debris" 🤣🤣🤣🤣 Cheers. Leigh.

Fair play to you guys taking that on. Rust for fun the Mk3. I had a Series 1 RST back in the day, 4 years old, 24k on the clock when I bought it back in 90' and as much as I looked after it the back seams below the bumper needed sorting and the front slam panel where it joined the inner wings started rotting and had to be cut out and renewed. Looking forward to seeing this once completed. 🙂

@byronmills5952
@byronmills5952 Жыл бұрын
The battery try area was always a notorious area for grot on the MK3 Escort due to poor drainage. This car has suffered rot in this area earlier on its life and has suffered from repeated bodgery which has still allowed moisture and rot to creep in to the structure underneath - the Rs1600s suspension set up is also very stiff and unforgiving to any weakness in the shell. Whilst not the worst cars in period for rusting out, sills floorplans bootfloors and rear chassis legs are classic weak spots. I also believe the single stage metallic single stage paint used in the factory became more porous in old age than the solid colours. My 1982 Crystal green 1.3 was an utter rot box but in comparison my Coral beige 3 door Ghia was totally rot free.
