I have a 1968 912. I bought it for my wife for our first anniversary. She was so excited till she looked for the AC and there was none. After that, she told me it was mine. She's gone now and I still have the 912. I think if it was the other way around, I would be missing the 912 more. 911s are very cool, but the VW simplicity with the Porsche return will never be matched again.

It’s a rich mans game to own one of these. Growing up, I had neighbor with a 1968 912 in beautiful shape that sat in his driveway un driven for 15 years. He had owned it since 1982. When I turned 21, I asked him if he would sell the car to me. He replied that people come to his front door every week to ask if he had any plans to sell the car and that he wanted to hand it down to his grandson. I haven’t seen that car in his driveway for a year. My guess is that someone gave him an offer he couldn’t refuse.

Jane Leelavathi just going off a neighbor of mine who had a rare (but not very valuable) Toyota Soarer active model, UZZ32 - only around 800 ever made. It was in very good condition and everything worked perfectly. He gave it to his son who stripped all the active suspension technology out of it and turned it into a trashy drift car before writing it off a few months later. :-(

My mom passed her 69 912 to me, she bought it new in 1969. I can say I rode in the back seat in comfort(that was a long time ago). It is a great little car, when we found out how valuable it is. We were in shock, if you don't want offers keep the car in a garage. The most important thing, I cannot emphasize enough. You have to drive the car, letting any car sit isn't a good thing.

don't worry guys. whatever comes next will be good. trust me this is one of the few channels where peoples opinions are considered and valued, and the videos are done mainly for fun not for money. so even if we get less quantity of one takes there will be something similar and great, or at the very least our feedback will not just be considered but appreciated which already makes this one of the best automotive channels out there without even looking at the content. I remember getting answers/explanations/opinions to my feedback from klappman or farah so many different times. It disgusts me to see greedy automotive youtubers pretend I'm part of their life/job/channel even though they only care because of the money. I feel like the audience of TST is basically the opposite of the vehicle virgins audience, meaning there are drivers instead of kids in this comment section. we can't force more one takes but that's life if he made more one takes without enjoying it then it wouldn't be to much fun to watch anyway. this channel will always be worth a subscription though unlike 90% of the rest.

My second Porsche 912 purchased for $1300. In Washington State in 1982. Pulled the engine and glad I did the oil drive pump drive slot was just about to go away. Added 1743cc cylinders and pistons, new bearings, oil pump. Great car for town and county. Even got almost 30 mph hiway. Miss that 912. Would love to have another and would differently love to have your 130hp engine. Thanks for the story of your 912.
@MiguelGonzalez365 Жыл бұрын
In a test in a French magazine of the time, I read that this engine consumed 3 litres of oil per 1000 km. I wonder if this is normal. The specific power is brilliant, but it does not reach the values of competition engines. Did your unit have such a high oil consumption?

I know it's beating a dead horse and it's all relative but $20k for an engine is insane. I know the Porsche premium is high and the parts are more and the labor is more but damn.

@mattwasilewicz96777 жыл бұрын
Not really. If you have ever fully built a high performance motor on an older car, starting with a bare block, its not really that insane of a cost. Its a lot different then buying a Chevy crate motor that is still mass produced. I've gone through it before in one of my cars, and almost spent that much, and that was having a friend do it who builds engines, and didn't really charge much for labour. Heck, a top quality paint job will cost you 10k nowadays
@MH-ev3wr6 жыл бұрын
How many 1.7 Liter naturally aspirated engines do you know of that make 140 hp? You realize that 1.7 Liters is just over 100 cubic inches, right? If you do a simple ratio then an equivalent 454 should be making just over 600 hp. How many 7.4 Liter naturally aspirated engines do you know that make 600 hp? I'll wait. The Hellcat engine, you say? Sorry, supercharged. The Corvette ZR1 engine, you say? Sorry, supercharged.
@europlebr32165 жыл бұрын
M H Not a fair comparison. Those enormous engines are usually pushrod which rely on their enormous size to produce power, and not to mention the ridiculous torque they output..

This is why he answered the $60,000 question like it came from his wife. You use that Man math on the rest of the car and this is a very expensive slow car.
@TheSmokingTire7 жыл бұрын
“Not crazy,” of course, is relative to what Porsche horsepower costs elsewhere. A standard rebuild for the stock 3.2L motor in my 87 Carrera is $20,000. No high performance anything, just a stock rebuild. So while yes, $20,000 is a lot of money, it’s about the minimum you could spend for a hot rod engine of any kind from a Porsche Racing shop.
@mickles19757 жыл бұрын
Well there go any ideas I had of owning an old Porsche. lol
@mattwasilewicz96777 жыл бұрын
It a lot, but not ridiculous, especially considering it is somewhat specialty work. I spent 15k building out the 454 in my Chevelle, and that was having a friend of mine who buils engines do it for me who barely charged for labour. You would be surprised how things add up when you are replacing basically every part in an engine, and having to get machining work done. However, you basically end up with a brand new engine afterwards though.
