Hugh Smitham great question and mostly a good answer. This is a KCK Mount and Klayton who designed it, has made a newer mount to fit Yaesu. I helped him work on the prototype as the Baofeng Mount is a little small. Email him squareup.com/store/KCK/item/radio-mount-w-nut

That drawer is great, and I know he went on to start the slide out kitchen company that is amazing. Really want to make something like it. How long did the wood construction hold up? That's my main concern in he back of my truck. I do have a cover, but not sure if I can paint it, bed liner, or what to make it survive back there.
@pullkitchen1298
@pullkitchen1298 3 жыл бұрын
It held up great, and I used furniture grade 1/2” plywood. I glued and nail gunned the joints. This drawer was covered in PU, but if weather is an issue try to find a BBQ cover that fits your dimensions and that will work. We will soon have custom weatherproof covers for our Pull Kitchens that fit like a glove. But for DIY that might be a great route. Thanks for the great feedback :)

Literally there is no sh$% in the back of my truck, metaphorically you can stuff the bed like a burrito, but figuratively speaking with the rack and bed you could fit the kitchen sink if one wanted. I brought along half of the gear I carry for a week long trip for this walk around. Idk about you but I’m only packing all that gear if I’m going somewhere cool! Thanks for the comment ;)

I was hoping to hear about the tonneau cover. Looks like a DiamondBack SE. You need something strong to support the weight you've got on that thing, so wondering if an SE can handle it or if an HD is required.
@daviddouglass208
@daviddouglass208 4 жыл бұрын
Mad Max The Diamondback SE cover can handle 500lbs, but the KB Voodoo racks have tonneau brackets that go around a cover and put the weight on the bedsides. So the weight is on the cover and on the bed rails. Works out really nicely. I’ve changed my drawer since then and my roof top tent.

Thank you for including the “Get your ham ticket!” plug. Those Yaesu, Icom, Kenwood, and yes, even the uber-cheap Baofeng/BTech/etc radios receive and transmit on frequencies reserved by the FCC (and spectrum authorities in every country) for use by licensed amateur radio operators only. Unfortunately, purchasing the radios doesn’t require a license, so many less-than-scrupulous online retails advertise them as “off-grid” or “off road” comms for the 4x4 crowd. Basic rule, if you can type in or dial in a frequency, not a channel, it likely requires a amateur radio operator license to operate legally. Bottom line: if you’re in the U.S.A., download any number of study apps, get your ticket (I think it’s around $30 to take the test), and enjoy the privileges of UHF/VHF comes. Search “[your city/town] amateur radio club” to get more information. 73s.

Great build! I really like how everything is for a purpose, and that slide out drawer is brilliant!! I also really like seeing the bikes on there. I feel like backcountry exploring and mountainbiking go hand and hand. I LOVE to mountainbike, and most of the camping (I'm not going to call it "overlanding") I've done is because we were away riding somewhere, and mountainbikers spend all of there money on beer and gear, not hotels, haha. I'm currently shopping for a rig, and a big part of that is because I want a better support vehicle for my mountainbiking trips, as well as getting away further and for longer. I'm going with a larger SUV , I 'm thinking 1st gen Sequoia right now, because I want to be able to sleep IN the vehicle. I'm over setting up in the pouring rain, that seems to happen way too much. I want to be able just park and then curl up in the back.

Gerry Creighton good question, I just got a costway water heater that has a pump built in for showers. It will pump cold water or hot like an in-line heater from my blue water cubes. So it’s portable still. I also just finished a sliding mount that holds a Quick Pitch En-suite privacy room for changing and showers. It’s mounted in front of the rack behind my rear window and pulls out to make a nice room to clean off. And for my daughters to feel more comfortable changing.

Awesome rig. I want to do this to my next truck as my current DD is a 2 door and useless for the family. I love tacos but “Dodge-til-I-die” I know stupid but I’m one of the guys who only love one of the “big 3”. Therefore I was thinking a Ram 2500 is what I need. How does all the extra payload work with your taco? What is the GVW with all your gear? Not that it matters for off-roading but my trips can be 300 miles one way so fuel economy matters to me. What you getting with the taco fully loaded including your family in it? Thank you.

RT Molinari just saw this, so loaded up I’m guessing I’m adding on about 600 pounds. With airbags the truck does just fine with the weight, on the highway doing 73mph I’m getting about 17-18mpg. Off road varies greatly. Early November I joined an OLB trip to Death Valley for about 400 miles off road and it was so much fun! Climbed up a dry 8 ft waterfall all loaded up. Tacoma’s are great because they are not very wide compared to a full size, so they go most places Jeeps can. So it depends on your style of off road, as forest trails get very narrow quickly. But a Ram 2500 will give your family more interior room for sure. I purposely chose a mid-size truck because trails can be small in the Sierras by me, and some of the tighter parts of Echo Canyon in Death Valley. Just something to consider

How did Dave get the Voodoo rack to go over the Diamondback cover? Does he lose the ability to lift the ends of the cover? I have a Diamondback cover and would like to explore options similar to the Voodoo rack. Thanks!
@daviddouglass208
@daviddouglass208 4 жыл бұрын
Rob Gurden KB Voodoo makes tonneau brackets that go around covers, and while the rack is on no I can’t raise the covers. The DB stays on all the time and then I leave the 4 tonneau brackets on all the time. They don’t show much and it allows me to put on my rack with just 4 bolts. The RTT is always on the rack, I move it all as one unit

Are the voodoo rack mounts that go under the diamondback cover custom, or do they come with the rack?

Kevin Ramirez So my Rack doesn’t mount to the cover, but there’s tonneau brackets that go around the cover and mount to the bed rails in the truck. That way I can keep my cover on. Here’s where I purchased the rack shown in the video www.max-modular.com/shop-max-modular/

Do these 3rd gen tacomas rust? I was looking into either a Tacoma 3rd gen TRD Pro or a F150 5.0 L Aluminum body..looking for longevity and capability for off roading for camping and climbing through heavy snow
@daviddouglass208
@daviddouglass208 5 жыл бұрын
Everything rusts :) you’ll have more room in a F150 but also factor in your type of off roading as many trails I’ve been on full size vehicles wouldn’t fit. Too wide and too long. Personally I wouldn’t pay extra for the TRD Pro as the upgrades aren’t worth the extra cost. You could get a fully loaded TRD Off Road edition and take that 10k in savings and buy excellent shocks and gear with it
