I’m really enjoying your videos on this Rolls Royce Phantom and the back story about the car especially as it’s an early car with a very early chassis number. 😎👍

Man after my own heart. I have daily driven my Phantom for about 12 years now so have a lot of experience of doing what you did today. It’s a shame you couldn’t actually carry out the drive thru test because it is something that isn’t really possible in this car. Most drive thru places have lanes which narrow and tighten as you drive behind the restaurant. This is normally too big to make it round. I nearly got very stuck in the one at McD Battersea and I genuinely thought it would need airlifting out. 😂. Car parks are a problem as well. Sometimes you can’t get the ticket out of the box because the front is already at the barrier, and it just doesn’t fit in any spaces. The doors are so thick that although the width of the car is about that of a Range Rover, you can’t get out once parked as the doors are a foot thick. Apart from that all other uses are possible, even trackdays which are great fun in something so unlikely. I’ve been to ikea, the tip, school runs, you name it. It is just like a normal car in many respects. The size is the only major problem. One aspect that really compromises daily use in close quarters is that of damage done to the car and the problems fixing it. A main dealer damaged mine once and fixing the problem took many attempts and a year to put right. I didn’t pay of course but the cost would’ve been eye watering. Fuel isn’t too bad overall. A 100l tank can give over 400 miles on a run, or single figure mpg in London. Tyres are up to 900 each so that needs factoring in, but routine servicing isn’t too bad considering what it is. I too had a Black Wraith BB for a while and I noticed it got a lot less attention than Phantom which I also put down to the smaller size, and relative commonality in London. I have a Ghost Mk1 which is a very good compromise between luxury and usability, but it just isn’t as special as the Phantom. It feels like a very posh 7 series sometimes which highlights just how well RR did with the Phantom 7. 20 years on and it is still unique amongst its peers. The 8 is nowhere near as special. Enjoying your content. Keep up the good work.

For most people it’s not the cost of the car it’s the running costs that put them off buying these old phantoms - u spent nearly £25k in your 1st year - that’s gonna put a lot of people off - many would like to buy one of these cars but when they hear about the running costs they run a mile
@ChrisEdworthy
@ChrisEdworthy 4 ай бұрын
That’s very true. But they are worth every penny. My newer Wraith was cheaper to run, but the you’re fighting depreciation. It’s all just lots of money for a lot of car that has been put together with skill rather than machines. That’s the bit I love about it.

Introcar is the best place for parts for the Rolls, Chris. I think it would be a good idea if you contacted them about your problems with the Rolls you own. This particular design was put together by Ian Cameron so it's his baby. It was very subtly improved with the Series II version in 2012. The chassis remained unchanged right up until the very final extended version in 2017. It was a wealthy customer who especially specified the very last one around an exclusive yacht. They did however bring a final version of both the Drophead and Coupe called the Zenith edition. (The satellite navigation system was also improved in this subtle update.) I'm thinking you've got a diamond in this fourth chassis of Ian Cameron's design, Chris. She's not perfect,but I think you will crack the case one day. Enjoy her for as long as you can. Many congratulations my friend. Stuart

I know I'm right, Chris. Nothing much gets past my radar when it comes to Rolls Royce Motor Cars. I wish you all the luck in the world putting her right. She'll cost you pretty dearly, but it's worth it, isn't it? Ian Cameron's Phantom VII Series 1 got the exterior absolutely correct, however the interior design was not quite so perfect as first imagined; the satellite navigation system is a little too clunky; Giles Taylor however corrected this problem by totally reinventing the interior design. The all new chassis is a huge step in both design and technological advantages. The actual coachwork less so. The Cullinan Series II is the most perfect interior design you can get on a Rolls Royce even though it's a High Sided vehicle and not a saloon vehicle. Fact. Stuart

@ChrisEdworthy

It's good to share... if people see a cheap Rolls or an older well-maintained one. It may not be about the purchase cost. The cost own ownership is the key... so even an aging car needs deep pockets. I guess you either take the hit in depreciation or running costs. I should have been a Mini fan instead!! 😂

Hi Chris, I'm enjoying your videos on your Phantom Rolls Royce. It's really interesting to see the daily running of these cars. I'm curious as to why you parted ways with that gorgeous Wraith black badge? That car and spec looked absolutely stunning.. and I'm surprised you say you get more looks in the Phantom, than the Wraith.. but I guess it's the sheer size and road presence of the latter? Keep your excellent content coming.. All the best, happy motoring. Stewart 👍 New Subscriber.

Thanks for subscribing and your kind comments. The Wraith I bought pretty well, and the values after 12-15 months started plummeting. I don't have millions to be able to sit on cars, I just love them and spend too much on them. But I couldn't afford for it to lose £80-100k, which it now has. So I got out without too much pain. Going to try and make KZbin work and buy my next one! ... well I can hope. Thanks for watching!

I'd like to rent this car one day or two. I know it's gonna be far from my ability to maintain a old one even haha. But they aren't so terribly priced, but I don't think they are so reliable mechanically either. So even if you get a old one, your bill for repairs might still be high let alone fuel costs. I live in the gulf so we actually have quite a lot of used RR's in the used market.
@ChrisEdworthy
@ChrisEdworthy 4 ай бұрын
Fuel would be ok in the Gulf, a lot cheaper. They are pretty reliable. Just need little and often, on-time preventative servicing. Find one with a great service history, I think it would be ok.

Hello Chris, I’m a recent subscriber, and I’m enjoying your evolving story with the Phantom. There is however something I must get off my chest, and bare my soul about. I may well be in a minority of 1 but here goes… I dislike the modern Rolls Royce styles. I cannot tell you why, ( perhaps something to do with the smaller grill ?? ), but it just doesn’t get my hormones activated the same way as the older cars do. I think somewhere in my psyche I think that RR are not meant to be aerodynamic, low slung speedsters, but rather awe inspiring statement pieces that can shift when you need them to, and are kind of the statesman ( or woman ) of the road. One last complaint …..what is it with this grey colour nowadays? It’s boring, monotonous, uninteresting etc. I do see more and more cars in that colour so it’s not just a RR thing. Anyway I throw myself on the mercy of the court, and await my punishment. On the positive side I’ll never be able to afford one so perhaps my points are pointless anyway. Thanks for posting the videos Chris, despite my comments I do enjoy watching and following your story, and the phantom is a wonderfully stylish and impressive car. Cheers John
