Mine get plenty of veg to make sure they produce enough vitamin C so they’ll get a few options out of bell pepper, carrot, green veg like broccoli, kale, cabbage, fennel, herbs, occasionally corn, green beans, bean sprouts etc. It’s important they get 1 cup of veg per pig daily to ensure their vitamin C production.
@SqueakDreams3 жыл бұрын
I agree a variety of fresh vegetables and herbs are good, however the reason I reduced the amounts is due to digestive problems in my older piggies, paired with research and advice from my specialist guinea pig vet. In reality their pellets and even their hay supply them with most of their vitamin C intake, whilst the healthiest diets have shown to be those highest in natural roughage and fibre. Digestive problems like bloat and gut stasis are very common and can be caused by imbalances in the gut, often caused by an overload of fresh (high carbohydrate and relatively low fibre content) vegetables, rather than a diet composed of more natural grasses, herbs, forage and most importantly for us owners, good quality hay.

I do a rather late start- at 10 am I neaten the area where they eat and put veggies/grass there and while they are eating, I do a quick clean up of the cage from all the night pooping! Lol II scratch their heads and give a couple of tpea flakes. Between noon and 2 I ask them if they’d like a cookie, to which they hurry to me for their vitamin C “cookie” (they won’t touch the syringe for the liquid C) Last, about 5-6 I give a few more veggies and do a second clean up of the cage. I ask who wants pea flakes, and they get a few of those. Often I pick them up and hold them while I scratch their head or give a pea flake. I’m amazed at how much more calm they’ve become since I first got them six months ago! The one thing I can’t do often is floor time because I deal with chronic pain. I do have an extra set of wire squares that are zip tied together and a big piece of fleece material and I put it on the floor sometimes. I’ve also taken them outside with the wire and let them eat grass from the yard a few times.

@jaytucker88343 жыл бұрын
I believe this is quite normal, hopefully Sarah will confirm. My understanding is that it is how they sort out their hierarchy, like who is the boss. I have a mum 5 yrs old and her two daughters at 18 months, they frequently jump onto each other, and chase each other around. Again, my understanding is that as long as they don't draw blood through fighting it is perfectly acceptable and normal behaviour for piggies to behave this way.
