And just like that, our new life has begun. We are new homeowners, we officially moved out of New York City, and we moved to the suburbs.
We’ve been in our new home for just about a month now, and it’s been the best feeling in the world entering into a new stage of life with our little family. Michael and I have dreamt of owning a house and living out in nature with our children since we were in high school, and we cannot believe that we are finally here doing our lives exactly the way we’ve hoped to for so long.

House remodel update: All of our major renovation projects are done (stay tuned for more before and after reveals!) but the space is still feeling a bit incomplete as most of the furniture that we ordered is either back-ordered, severely delayed, or arrived damaged. There are also a few pieces I’ve held back from purchasing because I’m waiting for the others to come in first; I want to see the items I’ve already purchased in the space before I decide what would pair best with them. That being said, our home is pretty echoey at the moment and definitely has that new house feel.
Lots of people have been asking me how to meet people and how to make new friends when moving to a new town. Here’s what I’ve found so far...
How to make friends in a new town: I’ve been meeting friends of friends, who then introduced me to more people from the town, and it has been building from there. I’m also working to get involved in various activities in the town-workout classes, tennis lessons, etc.-because I’ve found that to be a great way to meet new people with similar interests.
How to make mom friends: Sending my son to a preschool program has helped me in the pursuit of making mom friends because I’ve been able to meet other young parents at school drop-off. I’ve also joined a WhatsApp group filled with other moms who have young babies in the town.
Now, onto the experience of being a first-time homeowner.
I’ve always heard people talk about how being a homeowner is difficult when it comes to all of the issues that pop up that you have to handle by yourself (versus renting and being able to call a maintenance person to help at the expense of your landlord). In typical homeowner fashion, our first week in the new house came with a bunch of challenges: broken appliances, issues with the air conditioner, damaged walls, and more. All of this to say, we’ve been compiling a punch list, but luckily, because we plan on living in this house for the long-term future, we don’t have to rush to complete it all right now. Being a homeowner is not a sprint, it’s a marathon, and we are glad we have the time to settle into the new town, make friends, explore the area, and enjoy the moment.
In the best way possible, it really feels like we are starting fresh in a totally new phase of life. it’s not even like we flipped to a new chapter of a book, but it’s more like we’ve put down our old book and we’ve completely started a new book.
I can’t believe how many of you have been here following my journey when I was just a young 20-something girl living in New York City with my boyfriend, and now, here I am in the suburbs, owning a home, with my husband and a baby. I am fully in my suburban mom era and it feels so good.
