In my third grade class, we had that very situation where we had one Jewish kid. What my teacher did was have that kid's parent come in and they did show-and-tell with teaching us the Draedel Song and giving us all little plastic draedels. I found it really fascinating and even though we were at a public school, I don't remember any parent making a stink about it or anything. It was just a cool way to learn about the culture of one of our classmates.

That is a great teacher. In one school i attended our parents were all asked to make a native dish of our parents culture and bring it to school and also hopefully bring a story behind it if we knew how the dish originated.

After 51 years, I just attended my first Hanukkah party. It was well done, in that we learned about the history, spun the Draedel, and found ways to memorize what each symbol meant, as well as their order (Miracle Great Happened There). One doesn't loose their belief by learning more about the insights and traditions of others.

We had a handful of Jewish kids in our class every year, but yeah -- the Chanukah-dreidel tradition by someone's family was time-honored. (My friend Cynthia's parents brought a batch of tiny ones in one year so we could each have one to keep -- I still have mine! 🕍⛪

Nick Flores Craig is a conservative, it's just that politics isn't the subject of his work. He's done podcasts talking about the Supreme Court and the importance of getting conservative judges to protect religious freedom and such, that's as much as he's talked about it though. I think that ALL THE TIME. Especially because the historical and theological gap between Michael's Catholicism and Ben's Judaism is bridged by the ancient Eastern faith (the notion of an "orthodoxy" of worldview) and Church (the embodiment of the faith). They've got Klavan for (a slant take on) the Protestant movement, though I know a few Lutherans (from my University days) that would be a little more squarely in that gap (also historically and theologically) and could definitely hold their own theologically and alcoholically with these guys....

Jeremy gave a great description of the earliest days of the Church, from a Protestant angle. I rarely hear people outside of Orthodoxy who understand or explain this clearly. 😁 It's beneficial for us as gentile Christians to honor and value the feasts of Judaism, although we don't keep them as the Jews do. We're the adopted kids into the birth family. As an adoptive mom, I can vouch for the importance of recognizing the value of everyone's contribution!

That whole thing was absurd. Augustine preached Christmas homilies. The reason why Christmas is December 25th is not because it is near the winter solstice. It is because it is 9 months after March 25th, which was the conception of Jesus (the Annunciation) from the earliest days of the Church. I have never heard someone be so confident and so completely objectively wrong before.

The day before Thanksgiving the recycling truck flipped on its side and crushed one of the workers. I do not think he had life insurance. It was very sad, but they always speed through the neighborhood and swerve around as a sort of game. This is why he died. I hope his family is doing okay.

In Hawaii, we have many cultures. I’m Christian, but at St. Joseph, a Catholic School, they had a few more holidays than the non-Catholics d/t “midnight mass” for example. We had Buddhist in our school who had late night “Bon Dances” annually. No one cared. Some students were jokingly disappointed that they had to go to school when others had a religious day off, but not to the point of tantrums.
