Best part of this round-table is the discussion of craft and how much time and hard work it takes to become good at something. Most people doesn't have the time or patience for that--forget about being great. The old cliche is true "It took only 20 years to become an overnight success." I can say that I can fall into this trap, particularly when I look outwards and compare myself to others.

I thought Black Panther was one of the most conservative films made in a long time. I just watched it for the first time this week and have been thinking about it ever since. From what I remember of the commentary about it at the time of its release, I had no desire to see it. But I decided the other night that I would watch it, mostly because the options for me on Netflix are limited. It may be a case of me seeing what I want to see, but my experience with the movie was nothing like I expected it to be. I actually really enjoyed it. This is the symbolism as I saw it. Wakanda = each individual person, black or otherwise. We are each a complicated amalgam of our past, present, and potential future. That is why Wakanda has this mix of older and current Africa and a futuristic possibility powered by Vibranium. Vibranium = the human soul as children of God. Wakanda was endowed from the heavens with this otherworldly element that is the strongest metal known to man, capable of driving seemingly unending technological advancement, and able to be used for great good or great destruction depending on the sovereign will ruling over Wakanda. In the movie there are three kings, three sovereigns who’s rule over Wakanda are compared. Each king represents one of three ways that people can choose to approach the injustices of the past. These injustices of life may have happened to the individual themselves or to their group’s predecessors. One sovereign (T’chaka) chose to isolate himself from the rest of the world, keeping for himself and for the people of his in group all of the good that his vibranium (soul) was capable of producing. This king lets the world fix its own problems, having no responsibility to his neighbor that outweighed the protection of self. The villain king (Killmonger) chose to be entirely swallowed up by his hatred and resentment toward those who committed the injustice. His objective was to obtain power and to use that power for the destruction of the offenders and any who bare a resemblance to them; no quarter, only death and the rise of him and his people to rule the world. No evil deed is not worth doing if it leads to that end. He lives his whole life to kill the good king of Wakanda and use the vibranium to exercise his revenge. He is an engaging villain because he is YOU or me or anyone. We are all tempted to hate those that we feel have committed some injustice or atrocity upon us. It’s easy to heap up all the ruin in our own life and blame it on the perpetrators of the past and we could very easily find ourselves with kill scars all over our bodies in the name of doing good. The good king (T’chala) finds it in himself to let go of the hate for the enemies of his past, to overcome the fear of more harm to himself and his group, and is able to reach out to the rest of the world in compassion and wisdom to meet his obligations to them as a member of the only race that matters, the human race. The light of truth growing up in his heart (the glowing heart shaped plant) gives him super human strength that enhances his use of the vibranium to vanquish his enemies, make friends of former foes, and to rule in prudence and righteousness over his kingdom. There were two white guys in the film. One that wants to use the vibranium to enrich himself and one that takes a bullet for the good king and fights with him. This shows that race means nothing; only the goodness or evil of the individual matters.

Andrew B Frost I wouldn’t agree that it was the most in a long time as there are plenty of explicitly political documentaries that lean conservative but I think it’s less liberal than many think. I mean the villain was regarded as a bad guy for getting mad at slavery and colonialism.

I thought it showed the folly of monarchy. So many people praised it as a vision of Africa without Europe involvement, but Wakanda is a monarchy! Not only that, the only reason the world is put in danger is because of their archaic system of choosing a leader by deathmatch.

I think so many subscribers voted for Bohemian Rhapsody, because Queen rocks, but also, because he was on a kind of Hero's Journey. He started as the bold young artist, it went to his head, he messed up badly, by falling in love with the trappings of fame and scorned his family (the band, his wife, etc), and discovered he was surrounded by meaninglessness, and contracted aids. He returned to his family, with contrition, and they forgave him. He goes on, not to be great, or a hero, but is kind of is heroic, because Queens music inspired others to be heroic. Dude. I'm totally watering up just thinking about it. It was an awesome story.

It's like what happened in the Art scene after World War II. The questioning of how things were done, leading to the destruction of any quantifiable standards of what counts as art, leading to the sorts of garbage that can be seen at Modern Art Museums, like a 'Deconstructed TARDIS', being four blue doors piled up against a wall. As to the question about mashups like Pride and Predjudice + Zombies...so long as it destroys any and all proto-feminist themes and tropes within in them, it is all good with me.

Even though Bohemian Rhapsody had it's issues, it was essentially written like the hero's journey. If you map it out, it hits all the points. I think that is why it won the DW poll. It isn't easy to find a movie today, that is so archetypal.

I don't see most of the Oscar nominations every year, but I did enjoy "Bohemian Rhapsody" for the most part. Rami Malek definitely deserved his win for Best Actor, and it was really cool seeing Queen's story played out (even with all the historical liberties). I was never a rabid fan of the band, but seeing all the trailers for the movie really got me curious...and the result wasn't too bad. Rami embodied Freddie Mercury very well, and I completely believed his chemistry with Lucy Boynton as Mary Austin.

That last bit was really nice to hear. As a gamer I have been touched by incredible stories...saving the galaxy, fighting commies and whatnot, it’s nice to see people I didn’t expect to enjoy the medium get into it.

Loved Lionel's story about Freddie Young! One of the all-time great cinematographers and a true master of his craft.

If you want to make right wing movies then crowd fund them. I'll pledge $100 now for Andrew to write the Obama biopic script. Then next year when it's ready to film, I'll give another $100. If you can go to investors and show the movie already has backing it will be easier to get funding, if you need more. Let's get it done!
