Actually I see a lot of Jardel in the “modern” Cristiano. The way he finds space in the box , always open and so on. Jardel was unbelievable and unique. Sadly for him to demonstrate all his best abilities you would have to build a team and a tactic around him. In Portugal both in Porto and Sporting this was incredibly efficient, and having Jardel would pretty much guarantee you'd win the title. The problem with going to a Real Madrid, Barça, Inter or others is that these teams would have bigger stars that would not want to play exclusively to serve Jardel. But if any of those teams would have done it we would probably be looking at the highest goal scorer of all times, I have no doubt about that. Imagine what this guy would do with a Figo, Zidane, Beckham, Rivaldo etc. crossing balls to him...

Jardel the one that got away! He was ready to sign for Rangers in 96, even spotted at Ibrox at a game! Work permit issues ruined the move and if my memory serves me right it was Celtic offering Rudi Vata another year which used up the last work permit in Scotland. Weird rules back then!

I think Jardel had 16 goals in 13 games vs Real, Bayern, Milan and Barcelona. Let that sink in. No Messi, CR or R9 would have been able to do that with their clubs, much less playing for Porto and Gala.

Him not being selected for Brazil's world cup team's was a crime and can only be explained by the coaches not liking him or fearing that he might conflict with Ronaldo. Jardel was an absolutely prolific goal scoring beast and no doubt one of the top five strikers in the world in his prime. It's a shame, he didn't get his chance in a top league for a top club. Would have loved to see him in Barcelona or Milan.

@@ValiunDH I agree but you're exaggerating Portuguese league when Jardel arrived Porto had just won the Champions league and European super cup a few years early Benfica had also gone to a Cahmpions league final maybe 2 years before he arrived so maybe they weren't very popular but they were somewhat known at least the main clubes

@@ricardo82carvalho benfica went to they last European Cup final in 90. Jardel arrive in 96. But, its true the portuguese league was a little forgot by brqzilian coaches. So many great brazilian players that never were called, that play in Portugal. Isaias from Benfica, Aloisio from Porto, Artur from Boavista, etc. With the Bosman Rule entering in 96, a lot of teams from stronger leagues, could bought more brasilian players, so in Brasil, they care more for those leagues.

I knew about his reputation in the 1990s but only seen him properly when he played for Galatasaray against Rangers and scored a screamer in that game. The move to Turkey was bizarre at the time, I always wondered why nobody from a top league took a chance on him.
@Heldarion2 жыл бұрын
They likely knew about the drug problem and didn't want to even consider helping him out. It seems to be the most straightforward explanation. He probably needed a club that would lobby hard for him to get a place in the national squad, while also tying him down to a healthy lifestyle. Bayern seems to have that culture, ManU used to under Ferguson and Barcelona under Pep as well (although that one in particular was long after Jardel's peak).

The only reason I believe he hasn’t been called up is that at that time Brazil’s team was built off of technical skills, he scored goals, and.. to be fair that was his job on the pitch, but aside from that many people say he lacked the skills to be National team standard for brazil at that time. Still a horrible way to go. he would be in the group with the of the Brazilians we look up to and maybe we still should look up to him as he did so well for himself despite the circumstances

Its weird how he didnt get selected over much inferior and untested competition. He would have been the perfect player to come on in the late stages of the game if your team is down and need a goal. Was deadly with both feet and amazing in the air. As a manager he seemed like he would be the ideal wild card to change your fortunes on the pitch.

How has he never had an Icon card the FIFA game series is beyond me cause he has all the stats to make him just that or at least a Liga NOS hero. Our national team always had this problem. Some players are called up to play for the seleção not because of their football, but because of their agents. Many greats of Jardel’s time also suffered the same fate: Alex, Djalminha and Túlio come to mind almost instantly. But TBH, its sort of unfair to simplify matters as i am doing right now. Jardel faced tough competion. Romário, Ronaldo, Edmundo (look up how he did in 97 and you will see why zagalo choose him for the WC98) etc.
