Looks like the art of be bop drumming by John Riley? Or then, maybe Morgan's Book? A third option would be, maybe, syncopation? Great beginner lesson! I'd also recommend to practice separately the following triplets/figures while keeping the swing pattern: S (snare) K (Kick) K (kick): SKK KSK KKS KSS SKS SSK SSKK (doubles) KKSS (doubles) SKS KSK SKS KSK KSK SKS KSK SKS And once you can play all of them by separate, then combine them. But make sure your swing pattern (ride pattern plus 2 4 hi hat) stays nice, steady, with a good ternary feeling. Start with slow tempos (60-90 BPM) and get a good control, dynamics and orchestration. Always metronome set to triplets. Speed doesnt matter. You get it once you are aware of what really matters, as Michi said.

I have been playing drums for a long time, and Jazz has never been my thing. Lately I decided to finally learn it, and the way you are presenting the topic is awesome. It’s really easy to follow and understand. Thank you very much for sharing this.

Although I respect bop, I've never cared for it during my 50+ years of jazz drumming. I love a dance rhythm in 3/4 and 4/4 time with some accents thrown without disturbing the foundation. Latin music is fantastic for having what appears to be an irregular beat with a strong foundation. Dave Brubeck's "Take 5" is a wonderful example with Joe Morello's very strong drumming. Other bop just sounds to me like an accident. No disrespect meant.

Miki your lessons are always great - one comment thought- the volume levels of the the different elements need to be managed to really make it swing more - perhaps the bass drum is loud intentionally so it's instructive but from what I know you should not even really hear the bass drum, its is just barely audible to support the bass player- the ride and hi-hat should be out front, then the snare not too loud - IMO - Thanks
