occam's razor: often times the simplest answer is the most accurate. Russian soldiers don't want to die in tanks but the odds are against them. before they are sent out in the field, mechanics/crew/whoever attach whatever they have lying around in hopes of improving their odds by even a slight amount. it's that simple. I think trying to ascertain some broad strategy from tank crews doing as much as they can to improve their meager survival rates is a huge leap in logic. especially when you consider the lack of uniformity in design and structure of the turtle tanks. we're not seeing standardized or industrially made armor plates whose existence would hint that military leadership has at least some role in this. if they don't have a role, then there is no real overarching strategy since you can't really have a broad strategy without leadership being involved. last thing to mention... a turtle tank is equally susceptible to mines as any other tank. I think you saw the part about the mine rollers and fixated on that but that is definitely not standard fare amongst turtle tanks. so the idea that they are being made for the clearing of mines just doesn't really have a foothold in reality at this point.
@glennchartrand5411Ай бұрын
None of the captured "Turtle Tanks" had operational guns or ammo. Turtle Tanks aren't being used as tanks . Not only does the "Shell" restrict the movement of the main gun , it makes the machine gun useless , completely blocks the tank commanders view and severely restricts the gunners view...the only crew member who can see what's going on is the driver.. Russia is taking tanks with worn out guns and converting them into "armored trucks" because Ukraine has been destroying their regular supply trucks. After you remove all the ammo , the gunner and the tank commader you can cram a lot of supplies in and below the turret. The area behind the turret can also be used like a truck bed , it's why the "shells" extends so far behind the turret. The tanks have 250 gallon internal fuel storage and 150 gallons external. So they cram the turret full of supplies (including 400 gallons of fuel) and a driver pilots the tank the last few miles to the front where he'll drop off everything leaving just enough fuel in the tank to drive back and repeat. BTW the reason the gun barrel is always pointed slightly to the right is so the driver can open his hatch , they have to leave it that way because there isn't anyone in the turret to let him out. Once you remove all the ammo the Tanks can actually survive an ATGM hit and the shell protects against drones so they've also started using Turtle Tanks as Command and Scout Vehicles. The only reason they aren't completely removing the gun is the "Turtle Shell" is temporary and once the gun has its liner replaced and autoloader rebuilt it will be placed back into service as an actual tank.

Why not just re-write the software for the active defense measures and let the radar/ir/vision systems control the existing cheap onbaord systems e.g. an MG in a remote weappin station or a grenade launcher with a programable frag warhead engane the drone.
@BC-op7rjАй бұрын
So the tank essentially becomes an aircraft carrier of the land with autonomous defending and attacking drones that return to recharge at the tank. Presume someone will eventually make a kamikaze drone that can be launched as a main round out of the tank as an intelligent or loitering round. Maybe a recon version to scout ahead while on the battle field? What about a high speed drive shaft running off the engine deck that spins a length of chain (or helicopter blades at a height above the tank so the turret still had 320 degrees traverse. That becomes a “cage” by rotating quicker than a drone can pass through and is far less encumbering than a cage. It might only stop top down attacks in open areas, but the breeze from blades would upset the flight path of small cheap drones trying to attack the sides.
@COLDoCLINCHER37Ай бұрын
@@1337fliteIt’s not ideal, but what if the drone is wired electronically to the actual tank itself? I’m doing this, the drone can fly theoretically as long as the tank has a power source. And with use of an expanding dynamic wire that’s connected to the drone, similar to wired vaccume cleaners, the drone is highly mobile and can reach out meters in front of the tank and destroy incoming drones. But of course a counter measure would be to use charges that are self driven or propelled and the drone acts slightly like a transporter. Having three or four of these mobile wires drones would be a game changer, As they can be concentrated to protect the tanks most vulnerable defenses.
@COLDoCLINCHER37Ай бұрын
@@BC-op7rjInstead having them return to recharge, why not attach a dynamic wire to them. That contracts when the drone is close and rolls out when the drone needs to move out far. Similar to a wired vaccume cleaner where the cord expands when you roll it out. Don’t forget batteries are extremely heavy for the energy they generate comparatively.

It is funny how even western "experts" do not understand the Russian fighting style. The "Turtle tanks" are dedicated mine clearing tanks improvised for drone warfare, these tanks are usually older T72s and they are less protected than the fighting ones as it's job is to clear a path for the main force in a minefield. They are usually driven by an Engineer detachment within the Armoured formation, their job is not to stay and fight and they use their armament only when they have to defend themselves, and thus not being able to traverse the turret is not a big issue. Also the tank getting exploded by mine was funny as during the clearance process the tank has to maintain a certain speed, however, it could have been a IED instead of a mine.

The only fighting stylevrussia emulates is their ww2 style, unfortunately for russia it's not 1943 and they are getting seriously punished. Ukraine falls back sometimes when a town is totally destroyed as they prioritise men and equipment over a few metres of land. Russia still has under 19% of Ukraine which is less than they had week after the invasion started. 2025 will witness another break up off russia, little putin was desperate to re create the USSR but instead is destroying russia.😢

Send in two drones back-to-back on the exact same trajectory. The first defeats the armor, the second goes in for the kill. Asymetry man.

Черепахи условно эффективны против самодельных дронов. Более продуманные дроны и уж тем более подкалиберные снаряды танков и пушек - мгновенно нивелируют все преимущества разнесенной брони или РЭБа и уничтожают это недоразумение.

The outer shell means it is less effective but turns it into "a heavily armored troop transport". Surely not. Turning it into mobile artillery or for some turning it into mine clearers.

Since the tanks are so heavy then increase the weight needed to set off the mine above the weight of the anti tank rollers. They must be doing that?

All 3 or 4 Challengers destroyed thus far have tossed a turret. So, those "charged bins" didn't help. Ultimately, the ammo storage is in the turret.

Seems like the obvious hi-tech solution against drones is some sort of automated AA. Obviously Russia don't have the tech for that, hence that absurd turtle tanks.

Of course, the best protection against drones and other flying objects is the capability to shoot them down before they hit their target. That's exactly what the Swedish Strv-122 and its smaller cousin CV-90 are equipped with: a module that uses radar, laser, and optics to detect, lock on, and then automatically fire a standard machinegun, shooting 2, 4 or 8 standard NATO 7.62 rounds at $1 a pop with millimetre precision. So, as the British guy mentions at 17:20, that's the preferred way. Only Swedish Hägglund already did it years ago.
@ashleygoggs5679Ай бұрын
yes and no. the CV90 can indeed do that, but the issue is they are using the main gun using burst ammunation. This means you are using your main gun to protect yourself but what if you in a situation where you need to protect yourself from ground and air? I love the CV90 but it isnt a perfect resolution.
@bfelten1Ай бұрын
@@ashleygoggs5679 The main gun, based on the legendary Bofors 40 mm lvakan, is not used for this. The secondary weapon, a ksp m/48C based on the Belgian FN MAG, is used for this. This module works independently of the main gun's system, thanks to the modular design.
@AlexanderTchАй бұрын
Standard machine gun shooting during movements? You believe in that? machine gun is not stabilized. How do you aim those drones? Aumatically or by hands? You have special mechanisms , to control machine gun on top? Then such tank will cost like airlilner. Besides, how many rounds those machine guns spend on one drone? Usually tank can carry around 500 rounds for machine guns. If it's high velocity machine gun then you'll waste all rounds in 3 secons. And usually during any mission tanks faces dozens of drones of all kinds. So, it's easy for your mass media declare woundewaffe that was never used in combat , especially in large numbers.
@Frille512Ай бұрын
@@AlexanderTch 500 rounds for machine guns? What is this, the interwar period? And stablizing an MG is not very expensive compared to the rest of the vehicle for fucks sake. What even is a high velocity machine gun? Nobody's claiming this is a wonder weapon, it's a defense system. If you think a machine gun automatically shooting down drones is far fetched, just wait until you see what a trophy system does. Nevermind the bigass CIWS they have on modern ships that can track and shoot down BALLISTIC MISSILES. You're daft.

The mine plower type as shown in the video is rather unsophisticated in design. It doesn't seem to plow at all, instead just roll over a mine to apply pressure and set it off. One can easily delay the mine fuse, allowing enough time for the tank track to reach the mine prior to detonation.

Well that added armour seem to thin to make a difference even with the space between the tank itself and its turtle armour.
