Daisuke, hello my friend! Thank you for sharing these happy memories of going to Hawaii for vacation and describing some of your time in NYC where you would spot even more celebs! Brian De Palma, Kiefer Sutherland, Bjork, Ken Watanabe, Oliver Stone. Wow! I'm very ready for my bi-annual traditional ceremony of creating a short list of titles I wish to purchase around the time of the sale, wake up with breakfast and coffee and then head to my local Barnes and Nobles to browse. This Summer will be a bit different as I have limited the amount of titles I will get in efforts to save up for other things, but I know Drive My Car, Raging Bull and Pink Flamingos are all for sure purchases so that I might engage in some high-quality discussion with you about these films. I enjoy surprising myself with what I end up with each sale season and it's truly some of my fondest moments of recent years getting to enjoy these physical media releases and also the chance for good conversation. Thank you as always for your presence during these times. I very much appreciate it more than I can describe. I cannot wait to experience some of these mind-blowing titles and share some of my thoughts with you, my friend. Cheers! *Edit* P. S. Also, I've been meaning to ask this random physical media related question: Do you still have disc's boxes that have "price sticker remnants" on them?? I have some new blu rays that I ordered and it always aggravates me when they put those kind of stickers on the box.. Ugh! I rub them with alcohol and it still is kinda crummy underneath.. Wondered if that bothered you like it does me. Also one other question: Is there a japanese brand pop-corn or do they import Act II, Orville Redenbacher, etc.? Maybe there is a Mr. Sparkle popcorn??

Daisuke, it was very nice to hear your stories of Barnes and Nobles’ past. I too loved to browse there with a feeling of wonder and have been to the Union Square store on multiple occasions. Sadly, many Barnes are now gone or have gotten rid of the media section. Hopefully a few will remain as they are. 🤞

Daisuke. I can't believe this video was uploaded on my birthday and you, among other famous faces, had an encounter with one of my favourite artists ever, Björk, in New York. I was lucky enough to see her perform live a few years ago, hearing your story had me near enough leaping out of my chair hahaha.

These random chat videos have been very enjoyable to watch. I live in the UK where we have criterion releases but not the Barnes and Noble sale. However, last time I was Florida (back in 2015) I bought about 10 criterions during the B&N July sale. I was a like a kid in a candy store! Would love to do it again someday.

My first love was the book store until video rental places existed. WaldenBooks was before Barnes N Nobel ever existed. It was all about books until I saw the magazine rack at a Barnes N Nobel. Holy, the longest rack I ever saw, the whole wall of the store. In the middle, a small area, was the Entertainment Section with its usual movie magazines, Fangora, Starlog, etc, and magazines, like Cult Movies, Shock Cinema (the best magazine and only $5.00 plus tax, still!!). Video Scope, Horror Hound, Draculina, Video Watchdog, Psychotronic Video to name a few. I have spent hours inspecting every piece of that area, making neat, putting my hand down to feel any mags that were pushed down. That's how I found a few Draculina's. And of course, and still in Clearwater FL, we have a B n N with both the same magazine and movie sections. Oh boyyy!! And to make this comment short, I won't mention, or will mention B n N's competitor, the late, GREAT Borders Bookstore. Sometimes, Borders overpassed the movie section. The flaw, the videos were the most expensive, no sales, no special discounts, na da. Hence why B n N still exists. Glad I didn't mention it. Daisuke, you did it again, got me writing something very big, sorry. Again, I enjoyed your video and enjoy commenting. Have a good day, and have fun!!!

Glad you are back with a video, my friend! I can’t wait for midnight tonight. I have my list ready for buy online, pick-up in store for the ones I know I want. After I get those, I look around the store, grab a coffee, look at some books, and grab more Criterion’s. I hope Barnes and Noble stays open as long as possible! We have three stores in our area and I try to visit all of them once or twice during the sale. It helps that my birthday is July 11st, so I always get some Criterion’s from my lovely wife. Thanks for sharing your memories! You are a great storyteller, my friend. 🙂

Hi Daisuke. Thank you for sharing those celebrity sightings and your time in NY. As someone who grew up in a time of bookstores, record shops and video stores, I welcome the Barnes & Noble sale as a time to buy some movies the old-fashioned way. Your reviews always play a part in creating my wish list for the sale, so thank you for that.

I'm so jealous that you got to see Björk, I'm such a huge fan of her music, I listen to her music almost daily in fact just listened to her music couple hours ago! And Ethan Coen and Jarmusch et al too! Kevin Smith and Terry Gilliam are the only notable film people I've seen in person. Obviously I can't partake in the Barnes & Noble sale, but hopefully I can eventually visit the US and see those beautiful Criterion sections at B&Ns. I ordered Hiroshima Mon Amour Criterion blu-ray the other day though, love that film, so really looking forward to getting it soon. Amazing to hear your stories, best wishes as always!

The Barnes and Noble sale is practically a tradition for me. Whatever I get is always a treat! I have so many memories of that sale over the years! I go to two particular stores when I do it (though I have frequented a 3rd which is a bit further away). There was always the difficult choices I had to make in terms of what to buy and what to put back which resulted in multiple piles! But one thing I've noticed with the stores I frequent is how the movie isle is getting smaller and smaller. I understand that it has to do with current trends but I get a pit in my stomach at how much it shrinks. I also wonder about how B&N do with the sale in terms of limiting additional discounts and whether or not they will still have a sale period. Regardless, I hope it continues as long as it can! P.S. I know about that big chocolate chip cookie the cafe offers! That is a must and one of their best items! 🍪

Daisuke, enjoyed your random meanderings this morning. I too, have some location memories that mirror your examples to a degree. I never spent much time in the Big Apple but did hitch-hike there with a duffle bag over my shoulder back in 1973. With 90 dollars in my pocket I caught a KLM flight to Amsterdam leading to a 6 months stay. In 1977 I flew to Honolulu after an 18 month stint doing a radio show in Alaska. I lived downtown on Pau Street right off Kalakaua Avenue. I would visit the Ala Moana shopping center as you described. One time I was visiting an art gallery there and ran into Red Skelton who besides being a famous comic was a respected painter, however his works were all paintings of clowns. They reminded me of those paint-by-number kits. Across from my apartment was the Honolulu Beach Resort. In this facility they filmed the Don Ho morning show. Are you too young for "Tiny Bubbles"? I read the news at a radio station in Pearl City on weekends and had my weekdays free and so I would walk down to the beach and watch them tape the Don Ho show. I saw Lucille Ball, Tony Bennett, Redd Foxx, Jack Lord and even the Beach boys. To all you youngsters this must all seem like ancient history...and it is! I was teaching school in Oakland Ca in the late 90's. I supplemented my income as a night manager at the Barnes and Noble in Berkeley, Ca. This was way before B and N Cafes and music and dvd inventory. Oh, the dark ages. The biggest celebrity ever at our store was a personal appearance and reading from Allen Ginsberg. The store was elbow to elbow with Ginsberg disciples. What a perfect place to see the father of the Beat generation. Ginsberg died shortly thereafter of liver disease in 1997. Like you Daisuke, I have a love of books. One of the best stretches of road for books in Berkeley was and still is Telegraph Avenue. Most prominent is Moe's Books across the street from Amoeba Music. I could talk forever about Amoeba with their 1000's of records, CD's and more. Here in the greater Seattle area many used book store and used dvd stores have closed and many Barnes and Noble stores have also disappeared. Not exactly progress as I see it. I appreciate your random chat this day, young man. Here's a final question for you. Why is Carol Reed's FALLEN ANGEL always out of stock or is it out of print?

I am very much anticipating the July Criterion sale at Barnes and Noble. My purchases will of course depend upon their availability, but some of the films I hope to pick are Paris, Texas (1984), The Last Metro (1980), Taste of Cherry (1997), and Memories of Murder (2003). I hope everyone enjoys the sale!

Now if I can just find "Howard's End" on blu-ray. 🙂 I am glad to see that Egoyan is finally included in the Collection. Her has a bunch of amazing films. Also, when will we get Isle of Dogs!

fun to hear about your celeb spotting Daisuke! its perhaps fortuitous that you didn't trouble Bjork; have you seen the clip of her at an airport; she has quite a temper on her lol! the only semi-celebrity I saw was James Cromwell, from Babe, when I was working in a video store in London - he was actually kind of scary, like his character from LA Confidential ha

Somewhere in Brian De Palma's memory , he's having lunch, looks up, and sees Daisuke Beppu cruising down the sidewalk. I'd go to the B&N, grab a coffee and scone and read the local paper. They also had checkers and chess boards for pick up games.
