A couple of years ago I damaged my B700, and went shopping for a P1000. Every place was backorder except for a few sites on Amazon selling at a high markup. Then I got a notice of refurb available from Nikon and I jumped on it. Best investment I made. With the 3000mm equiv FL I can easily forgive small sensor size. Last year a pair of bald eagles nested near my home, I have hundreds of photos that I simply could not have gotten with a FF or APSC at ANY reasonable price (or weight) without mortgaging my home. Of course it's still pretty big. I supplemented it with a pocketable Lumix ZS80 (with 24-720 zoom). Even that sure beats a phone, but the image quality is not up to the P1000

Visually and apparently also technically in very good condition, I then discovered that the numbering of the images had already reached over 7000 shots. Could that be a problem?

@@SuperZoomVideos Thank you very much for your quick response. The camera seems to be working well so far, but I haven't taken many pictures yet. I could imagine that the lens mechanics could have suffered some wear and tear, but still work without any problems. I have now acquired a lens support adapter made of glass fiber reinforced plastic. The battery supplied still seems to be holding up well, but I have acquired a set of new batteries (1900mAh) + charger and Jaqueline Esen's book (in German) for the camera. Unfortunately, with older electronic devices, the power consumption often increases because the built-in capacitors, especially the electrolytic capacitors, age and then draw more leakage current. But that will take a few years longer. You can definitely notice this with my Olympus C-2000 with 2 megapixels from the mid-90s. But it is now very cheap to get and has a fairly bright lens - you can still take relatively good photos in the dark. But of course it is not a FLIR thermal imaging camera with germanium lenses, like the one I was once involved in developing professionally. ;-)

The P1000 as to its uniqueness is the number one camera in the world. It is on par with eccentricity to the Sigma 200-500 F2.8 monster lens from about 12 years ago without the $20 something thousand US price tag. Personally, I’m hoping for a 24 MP version of this camera as the 16 MP is now quite dated. I love this camera, and I think others do too because it is so much photographic fun. Who has heard of a camera that can photograph things that with your own eyes, you cannot see?? Yet this camera can peer deeply into the horizon and find subjects there to photograph. Nikon may want to wait for a couple more years but if this thing has been produced for six years, then there must be a considerable number of people buying this style of camera. Cheers and always want more!!

Well, talked with pro photographs cause I hesitated with this p1000, and its not that of a dream, the big big issue would be the captor size, really small, which mean if not in full bright day the image will instantly lose quality, and zoomed picture would need tripod, and even steady the micro movements during the photo capture would make some movements, heard that the Sony Rx10 III would be clearly overall better, sure won't have the biggest zoom, i can't decide clearly what to take between these two, Heard the Lumix P2000 was really good and way less expensive but some overall manufacture qualities.

It takes pretty decent quality photos too at full optical zoom. It’s such a pity it’s been discontinued as so far I prefer it over my DSLR and Canon ultra zoom bridge cameras. I love the P1000, but it has some major limitations. If a competitor ever releases a similar model: The P1000's minimum aperture is only F8. Why not something like F22? Secondly the sensor is soo noisy, even at ISO100. I heavily rely on the Adobe Lightroom Classic AI noise removing tool to get usable shots at all. I know that the camera is dependent on the small sensor's crop factor to get 3000mm effective focal length. But I just hope if we get a new release there is some improvement in the sensor noise. And the finally hunting for focus contrast autofocus, especially at full zoom or low light, that sometimes takes 2 seconds to find focus and then sometimes still fails. Plus a myriad of smaller issues.

I have my doubts that any manufacturer is willing to invest into an ultra zoom at this juncture. The main problem is that the value proposition isn't there unless you're looking for a motorized zoom telescope which happens to have what is essentially a $150 compact camera tacked onto it. That niche undoubtedly exists, but it is very small. For everyone else, the P1000 is effectively a big and very heavy camera with a non-interchangeable lens that doesn't take particularly great pictures when compared to ILCs (for one due to its tiny sensor and second due to the fact that with increasing focal range, more and more compromises need to be made in terms of optics, impeding image quality and low-light performance). It weighs not much less than my D810 when paired with a beefy 24-120mm f/4 lens and that is a 36 MP full frame DSLR still capable of taking fantastic pictures fit for large print. A combo, that, incidentally, can be had for what a used P1000 goes on eBay, if not less (high shutter count bodies). The P1000 is absolutely a neat piece of technology and probably mops the floor with a 100 MP Hasselblad in terms of crop equivalent zooming. But it seems like a camera that one would really be better off renting for a day at a time.

My Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra phone from mid 2021, with a well tuned GCAM produces amazing zoom shots at 10x with its periscope cam module. That periscope is a little less than inch long with a small 0.5cm diameter lens. If I can get good 10x from that (cuz. of multi-frame stacking of 10-15 frames + computational photography power of GCAM + well tuned denoisers sharpening etc.), The Nikon P1000 compared to that in volume is like comparing a black bear to a mouse in size. If they really seriously worked on it and used the full power of computational photography + some high end latest Snapdragon etc. to give the most realistic looking DSLR like quality to the image (not like the smartphone photos with absolutely over processed artificial watercolory look), Maybe put in a Samsung HP9 1/1.4" 200mp sensor in there, and use different levels of binning to pull out 2x and 4x simply in-sensor zoom (like it is done in the Vivo X200Pro phone) and have 83x 2000mm native zoom lens put into it, it could give 200mp 83x shots or 166x 50mp shots or 332x 12mp shots, and digital zoom can take it further to 1328x. Another important thing is to include state of the art algorithms for removing atmospheric heat haze distortions etc. Basically I want the latest smartphone 200mp periscope tech, with the size of the nikon lens, and want the algorithms to be like a well modded GCAM with 10-15f mutistacking. Technically very much possible, but there seems to be little demand or some other obstructing forces.

That’s the tripping point, all indications from Nikon is this line ends with the P950. There is a technical barrier for this as well, you can’t really do much more on the zoom side without the camera being any bigger. One can hope though

Well, talked with pro photographs cause I hesitated with this p1000, and its not that of a dream, the big big issue would be the sensor size, really small, which mean if not in full bright day the image will instantly lose quality, strong zoomed picture would Need tripod, and even steady the inner micro movements during the photo capture would make some movements, heard that the Sony Rx10 III would be clearly overall way better, sure won't have the biggest zoom, i can't decide clearly what to take between these two, Heard the Lumix P2000 was really good and way less expensive but some overall manufacture issues. Photo world is crazy in price.. and in release of products, most cameras are almost 10yo technologies, not an issue, but the prices.. damn!

A size of a DJI Pocket 3 has 1" sensor! I mean, if Nikon really wanted to make a killer flagship with this one, they could have just pulled the same with P1000 along GPS, Touchscreen and a OIS + EIS combo to even take better shots in low light. Low light with all the bridge cam sucks due to their small sensor size and no internal post processing. This would have completely stolen the spotlights even from other APSC Sensor imo.

I talked to someone working at a Nikon store in Singapore about the sensor size and a few people here have commented about this over the years, apparently to have a bigger sensor while maintaining the focal zoom would require an even larger lens, not sure if that’s is something that can be overcome in time but that seemed to be the consensus

Most people dont understand that the reason this is the only compact camera with this zoom range is the tiny image processor. Whih is also why its images are generally speaking sub par. There are very few things they can do to improved this. If the increase the size of the image processor (which would make its images more usable) it would significantly reduce the zoom range. The smaller the imager the more the zoom crop factor.

Can you explain this more? Why can’t the sensor be bigger?
@curtiswrigley6 ай бұрын
@@makotocole the smaller the sensor the larger the crop factor. Think of an old slide show. If you project on to a full size screen you see the whole image. If you project same image onto a screen half the size, you only see the center of the image. In effect that crop is a zoom of the original. With a larger sensor the lens has to do all the magnification. That's why high powered zoom lens s on full frame cameras are enormous.
