The reason why certain corners and sides were struggling was the zombies having the high ground, meaning that the zombies behind the front weren't in the line of fire as they were protected by the terrain. When the WW2 army had the high ground they could just spray shots and kill zombies for miles.

yes, and on top of that all the tanks were facing away from that corner and it seems that the they cant turn their turret completly around?

@@BlackWarhawk13 I think the tanks prioritize clusters and when searching for targets they start where the last shot was fired, instead of what's closer. You can see it when the zombies get up behind the tanks. Not to mention targeting like this would mean they would target the first side for the most part, and judging by how they don't change sides often, points to this.

Corners are weak in formations like this because the corners have 270 degrees of fire instead of the 90ish that the front-line has. It why in combat you want to avoid being Flanked.

Indeed, even better a full solid circle without empty areas inside as the circle has the shortest perimeter for a given area since the enemy can only engage the outer perimeter while being exposed to fire from all the soldiers for longer time. Also when the soldiers are spread in thin walls with empty areas between and the enemy manages a breakthrough in one place they will soon fill these areas and will be carnage afterwards.

Three suggestions. 1) Put Melee troopers on the outer ring. 2) Instead of one giant square, use a series of smaller squares (9 or 16). 3) If the simulator allows for it, try another shape formation other than square. Maybe hexagonal. The sharp corners are very vulnerable to being flanked.

Exactly I'd love to see, say, 10,000 redcoats v a wall of zombies but rather than just increase numbers of defenders keep the numbers the same but deploy them differently...

I've done this a couple of times and you can do it with a five-digit sum of troops. You have to set them up so that every unit can cover every other unit, the ring shape limits the amount of units shooting.

I find that zombies win like, most battles due to sheer numbers. I think people need to make a nerfed variant in customs for them to be held off. Only 25 damage but 200 health, which is the same as some of the soldiers.

Classic Horde Tactic: Overwhelm defenders with overwhelming superior numbers. A failure on the part of the defenders is Location Location Location. I would've place the formation centered on TOP of a mound. The Shermans then would have a greatly enhanced range. Plus the gunners flanking on the hill would have better use of their ranged weapons. On flat ground or worse yet in a hollow, their ranged utility is not much better than a melee fighter. Reason why one corner has fallen so quickly is because you gave the zombies the hill as their defense. Another failure is the laziness in just placing all the Shermans in one direction. A lesson not learned from the first pass. The Sherman AI tends to focus on what's on front and not check their 6 very often.

Just a tip to even out the tanks, you can take control of them and move them before you start the fight. that might help with even placements/gunfire positions so they are not focusing all at the same point.

I think two things are affecting the results. 1)The tanks don’t seem inclined to shoot in directions their not already facing. Try to put a row of tanks facing in each direction. 2) I think the Geography is impacting the soldiers firing lines. I don’t think they can shoot through ally spaces. Test this by placing them on top of a steep hill and a low valley, then compare the results. Another suggestion try mixed line formations. Stagger ranks of shotgunners and riflemen throughout the lines. Mix in some melee units like Roman soldiers to hold the outer perimeter of each formation. Just call them riot police, or anti-zombie soldiers.

I've made all of these suggestions before. Line of sight is the primary succeed or fail mechanic in this game. Berms eliminate firearm efficacy. Tanks keep berms down. And there's the dumb AI.

I think the big problem was that all your tanks were facing the same direction, and prioritized firing in that direction. maybe arrange your tanks into a square like the infantry was, so that they're facing all different directions.

The battles would be a lot better if the units didn't all have the same amount of hitpoints. Let's say each zombie for example would have a random number of hitpoints from 100-600. Then not everyone would die in almost the same spot.

A variation of like 10% would be more realistic, so a 500 hp npc would be 450-550. Same with speed, etc. lot more processing when its already maxing out though

To be fair the UEBS 1 zombies had a far more powerful method of turning soldiers into zombies. I remember you could place 1 zombie in a group of 25,000 footman and the zombie would just convert the whole army and beat it in a few seconds.

Love how you can still see the formation as a wall of bodies, nice vid dude it’s a shame you cannot do a circular formation, the corners will always fail when surrounded by large numbers

I saw a battle with very deep formations and the corners fared the best BECAUSE the ranks of soldiers from the inside of the corner to the outside of the corner were deeper than the line was coming straight on.

Having the soldiers in a large circle/square/line allows for an early amount if kills on both sides because there is simply more direct contact between enemies. Once the outer ranks are gone, the kill rates slow.

Interesting reference. The battle for Castle Itter, in World War II was a military engagement in which U.S. soldiers joined forces with renegade German troops to turn back a Waffen- SS assault on a stronghold in Tirol, Austria, where elite French political figures were being held prisoner by the Nazis.

I would like to say, i would like to see some 'close' battles. So far i only remember seeing considerable losses. Example, this battle the zombies had literal millions left before i got bored. My childish suspense of disbelief drags me out of the fun when i can easily predict the winner 10, 15 mins before the end of the video. Its good to watch the start, absolutely, but i definitely want the suspense of it being a hard clutch for both sides

Most of the American SMGs seem to be wasting most of their ammo, shooting at the sky. I think the game mechanics need to be tweaked a bit, so that the soldiers will be shooting at the enemy, not the clouds. If all the wasted shots were going in the general direction of the zombies, the zombies would not stand a chance.

Ok I’m new to this but I’m a technical/numbers person. 16k soldiers with an average cyclic fire rate of 100 rounds per minute (which is high for shotguners and very low for machine gunners) is 1.6 million rounds pumped out per minute. This battle should have been over before it started based off firing rate alone, without the tanks.

If you would flatten our the corners a bit on the inner and outer perimeters of the various squares, they would likely hold longer. That 90° angle isn't optimal for concentrating fire and is a major weakness. If possible, modeling it after the weird starlike shaped forts of the past would allow better concentration of fire all around.

There is a "character creation" mechanic that allows you to create units using pre-existing unit models and alter their stats, such as health.

I like how at 23:05 you take one last aerial view of the battlefield and you can see the zombies standing on the body piles in the shape of the three squares of of the battle lines. You can clearly make out the lines.

You should do one similar to the one with every type of unit except use a small amount of each "human" units vs a shit ton of trolls and zombies like 100k machine guns 100k redcoats 100k Romans 100k Spartans so on so forth

The tanks only carry so much ammo inside, and then the crew need to get out to reload. Shotguns would be useless for head shots. You still have the issue of how much ammo each soldier can carry. Basically they would be stacking the ammo boxes that would also double as a defensive barrier. Then there's the whole issue that dead soldiers would revive to join the zombie army.

This is like the Battle of Hope in the book World War Z. However the biggest enemy the US Army had to face in that battle was its own logistics. Keeping the men fed, calm, and with ammo to spare was the real battle.

The shotgunners should have been in the outer ring instead of the germans. They did basically nothing till the germans were being swarmed. And the flanks that the tanks ignore are just in a huge disavantage compared to the other flanks.

The WW2 soldiers probably would of held longer if the east side hadn't been defeated so easily but they were probably defeated so easily do to the terain and the formation of the zombies

Why not just spread the tanks out with 10 facing out on each line so you have less lag with only 40 tanks but evenly spread out fire supporting each line.

Great vid! Though I would be interested in seeing how terrain affects the outcome. In this scenario the WWII units were in a bit of a valley. It would be interesting to see how they fare on top of a hill instead. [Insert obligatory Obi-Wan high ground reference]

With numbers that high it is hard to take any references from historical battles, BUT: I think a set up of 40.000 troops and 50 tanks against 4 mio zombies would lead to a win on the WW2 side, if you minimize the line of contact (as close as it gets to a circle) and maximize the effective range of the units (tanks on the edges of a slope and facing outwards from the beginning, maybe in a circle as well; units with the least range in the outer ring and those with the most range to the inner ring) And using the terrain effectively is and always has been a winning factor in warfare. I'm not sure how effective it would be to split the army in two or three groups (I'm afraid with 1:100 the drawbacks outweigh the advantages. My first instinct would have been to put the WW2 army on the hill instead of next to it and partly into the slope. On the other hand this would only shift the problems with the tanks line of sight and render the middle and inner ring useless for most of the battle. There were some small hills in the opposite direction, though, flat land all around. My suggestion: position the tanks on the hill (if it's to small for 50 tanks maybe there's a hill close enough that you don't need to splitt the army) in one or two rings; position 10k German soldiers as circular as possible around them without leaving too much space between tanks and soldiers (less than 10 feet is absolutely enough to secure the next ring from being attacked through the last lines of the previous one), then 15k assault units around them (again as circular as possible with only a small gap between the rings) and then 15k shotgunners around the whole thing. Weirdly the shotgun units seem to have the least health. If you can you might want to switch the health points of the shot gunners with those of the Germans. This set up would mean that fewer zombies could attack the ranged units simultaneously, it would be harder to flank a ring when it breaks, the tanks could start firing earlier and the zombies can't just use the slope of the hills as coverage. Also all units would shoot away more or less at the same time, creating more of a shock to the movement of the zombies. I would be really interested in seeing how that would turn out!

Military 101, high ground has advantage. If you wanted each side of your square to have equal chance, place it on flat ground.

2 sides are weak because they've got no support from the tanks. The tanks are shooting in the direction they were placed. If you had placed the tanks facing each side I'm sure the WW2 army would've done a lot better.

The corners are very vulnerable in these formations. I wonder what other shapes this game allows for setup. I would try multiple circle rings. Also why are the tanks always on the inside? Aren't tanks supposed to be out front laying cover for the troopers? Maybe put 25 tanks out front surrounding the troopers in a giant circle.

grab all the units and ball them up. (using RTS mode) I did it and it does improve their fighting capacity.

Putting the forces on the top of the hills spilling around it so they are always shooting down. Put in some light machine gun, sniper and mortar nests. Put tanks spread out and closer to the front lines. They seemed far more motivated once the zombies got to them. Round the sides and fan them out. Make a follow up with these or other ideas, thanks

Try this again, but with the troops elevated higher. I think the mound of bodies gets so large it blocks LOS on the majority of the zombies, effectively handicapping them.

Terrain terrain terrain. Also the corners of a square are always vulnerable and need to either be reinforced or screened somehow. I think I would have the k98k armed troops in the inner square with the smg and shotgun troops in the outer to maximize fire power at a specific range, though maybe there is something to be said for engaging the enemy at longer ranges initially. Lastly, an active, mobile reserve is also essential to respond to potential breakthroughs and restore the line before the enemy makes a penetration.

I’ll love to see a rematch. How about 80.000 Germans and 100.000 Redcoat’s and 90.000 U.S army united against 25 million Zombies. This time make it the Battle of Waterloo 2.0.

I agree with others. Needed to have the Army on the High Ground as well as making the corners more hexagonal to better defend the corner areas. Also think you should make Kar98 have higher power like the sniper mountain video.

There is no shermans firing to the top left hand corner of the square at all and it's allowing the zombie army to close with the troops

Are there any traps that can be activated or on timer, mines fuel drums bombers, a few monster trucks in a cavalry like charge

The bodies of dead zombie make really good hills and stop ranged units from being effective, that's why they lose.

I think the problem with the soldiers is their positioning have them on the mountain or on straight flat terrain would be beneficial to them
